Ofer Biton, the New-York-City-based Israeli national who was once the right hand man of supposed kabbalist and rabbi-to-the-stars Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, was once a suspect in a large ecstasy drug investigation, the New York Post reports.

Biton served as a fundraiser for Republican Congressman Michael Grimm 2010 election campaign and allegedly helped Grimm violate campaign finance laws.

He was arrested in late July on immigration fraud charges and is still in custody.

Prosecutors want Biton to testify against Grimm, and are using a ten-year-old search warrant from the drug investigation to convince a federal magistrate to keep him confined, because they fear Biton will flee to Israel if he gets bail.

When Biton’s California apartment was searched in 2002, federal agents found a loaded 9mm semiautomatic pistol. They also found a California driver's license, Social Security card, and other documents in the name of "Haim Morziane.” The driver’s license had Morziane’s name, but it was printed with Biton’s photograph on it.

Even so, Biton was not charged in that drug probe.

In rejecting Biton’s request for bail, Brooklyn federal Magistrate Marilyn Go said she was concerned that Biton might flee because his previous use of false identity documents shows that he has skills that could be used to do so, and kept him remanded in custody – at least for now.

Go told Biton’s attorney that she will reconsider the request for bail in the future.

Biton, who now makes his official living dealing in New York City real estate, was Pinto’s chief aide until the two had a falling out after the 2010 election.

But before real estate, Biton was a porn distributor for many years, including many of the years he served as Pinto’s aide, and has settled civil lawsuits for selling porn that was pirated from porn production companies.

Meh, this country's obsession with criminalizing drugs that are less harmful than alcohol defies logic and is more morally disgusting than the people who choose to break those laws. IMO, anyway.
