Toronto Pedophile Arrest

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a historical sexual assault investigation into sexual assaults alleged to have occurred between January 1972 and December 1975. It is alleged that Heshi Nussbaum: 1) t while working as a teacher in a private religious school in the Bathurst Street/Steeles Avenue area, sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy at the school and during a summer camp, 2) the assaults continued over a three-year period.

A former Rabbi and teacher at Eitz Chaim Hebrew day school near Bathurst and Steeles is facing sex assault charges dating back to the early 1970's.

Rabbi Heshi Nussbaum taught at the school and is alleged to have committed an indecent on a male from 1972-1975.

The victim was 12 at the time of the allegations.

It appears that Rabbi Nussbaum may have also been the choir master at the Toronto Boys Choir during the same time period, although police have yet to confirm that.

Police believe there could be more victims.

Heshy's father Rabbi Moshe Nussbaum, was one of the founders of the Agudah movement in Toronto, and of Agudath Israel Congregation. He was also an active member on the Vaad Hapoel Agudath Israel, the governing body of the International Agudah organization. He was also active in Eitz Chaim schools, and was a found of Bais Yaakov High School. In addition, he helped found Camp Agudah in Port Carling, and Perspectives, the newspaper of Toronto Agudah.

This is such old news and the entire community has been well aware of it from the time in the 70's when the event happened. He left the school and entered into a business on Bathhurst Ave. just North of Wilson for a number of years. This story is not new and the community dealt with properly for the era that it transpired. It may have been dealt with in a manner unacceptable in today's standard, but he was dismissed and the issue was not hidden under the table.

Rape victims often block out the horror and trauma, only to have it all rise back to the surface decades later.

It is a common thing in cases like this, as you might see if you were to do a statistical analysis of all child abuse cases brought to light.

I have had things surface in my memories that are comparable.
They remain horrible, no matter how long ago.

Trauma causes actual physical damage to the brain.

It is up to the victim if they want to face it or not.
Sometimes they want justice, sometimes not.

I may be wrong though I was living in Toronto during that period of time and remember the incident very clearly. There most probably were other victims (he was also a macher in Camp Magen Avraham) but the school fired him ASAP and the incident was not hushed up in the community.

I am not excusing his behavior as it is inexcusable but I believe his wife divorced him and basically his life was dramatically changed for the worse after that incident.

He was my Grade 4 Rebbe at Eitz chaim, Head counselor at camp Agudah & involved in the Choir, (although he was tone deaf.) he was a dynamic person & personality.

He got busted at camp Agudah by the head rebbe (one of the kids actually spilled the beans), lost his job, family etc. Nevertheless, this didn't stop his trolling the local schools with his white van while being the mashgiacgh for cholov yisroel.

He messed up many, many kids.

I met him again at a highway rest stop on the way to NYC about 15 years ago. He was with a couple of boys, teenagers I think. He asked how I was, I just nodded and walked back to my car. I'm glad to see him arrested finally before Rosh Hashana.

According to a source from Camp Mogen Avraham, Heshi was "suspected" in the 60s of being a pedophile and removed. He went back to Toronto. There are stronger allegations that have been discussed on vosizneias but the Camp Mogen Avraham source did not acknowledge that. I tend to believe otherwise as at least one of the big persons at the Camp claims that he warned the Rabbanoim of Toronto that Heshi should be kept away from children and that his warnings were ignored. Why would he claim he made such warnings unless he was aware of specific incidents in NY?

Of course police were never called by camp officials. They never are. Not in NY. Not in Toronto. I've discussed NY before. Let's discuss Toronto for a change. Over the past years Toronto has had a gang rape of a young frum boy by schoolmates, a young frum boy sodomized by a shaliach with a key to the school (only the latter was repoted to the police by parents despite the school staff who tried to conceal it). In both cases, the schools forced out the survivors. There were several Satmar teachers that were told to run to Israel to avoid police investigations of child sexual abuse. The young girl from a frum family that was allegedly raped on Simchat Torah. A yeshiva expelled a student for trying to sexually abuse younger students. The list goes on and on.

Survivors of abuse are routinely gotten rid of by the yeshivot and the Paul Shaviv era CHAT and its wealthy patrons made sure that such riffraff did not end up at its institution to the horror of the poor parents who often came to CHAT as a last hope to keep their children in the Orthodox world. Perhaps the Toronto police should look at lists of children that were turned away from CHAT over the past decades and interview them or their families if they really want to deal with the the epidemic of abuse in Toronto. I doubt the Jewish community will as it has the blood of hundreds if not thousands of children on its hands. The fact is that Toronto is no different then other communities that are cold and apathetic. Even the powerful and wealthy are more concerned with concealing their dirty laundry than exposing the pedophiles that prey on even their children. One member of the Toronto boys choir allegedly died as a young man of natural causes despite the presence of cocaine and a prostitute at the scene of his death. How many less prominant men suffered "accidents" and "untimely deaths". Because of course the truth of their deaths and the abuse suffered in their childhood must be concealed at all costs.

Jack is wrong in that the Rabbonim of Toronto knew what Heshi was and protected him and made sure that he remained protected. The only reason that Heshi was removed from the camps and schools was that he was not careful enough and his conduct became too public. But don't worry, the community made sure Heshi had parnasah. His survivors/victims received no such support or assistance. A few decades ago, supporters/families of survivors approached the Rabbonim about Heshi and the other person of interest being discussed here (that was named at a link above) and the Rabbonim refused to do anything. They just pushed the "troublemakers" out. Heshi and the person of interest are known to all the established community leadership. As are others.

Eitz Chaim continues its legacy of not reporting abuse to the police by sponsoring a progam with Pesach Krohn who promoted his friend and researcher convicted/confessed pedophile Rabbi Lewis/Lipa Brenner in one of the Maggid Books. Rabbi Krohn also holds that child sexual abuse should be reported to the Rabbonim first. His brother in law, Rabbi Ephraim Bryks, is an alleged pedophile.

This is for Agudah Boy. Rabbi Miller as you state hid the actions of the dentist that prays in the Agudah. Rabbi Miller at the same time hides the corruption that goes on at the COR. He protects Rabbi Felder even though he has corrupted Kashrus in Toronto and has allowed companies that have been caught with non kosher to continue to operate. Many other Rabbis told Rabbi Miller to back off but he felt that he was g-d and that his word is final. I still can say as corrupt as Toronto Rabbis are they don't compare to the New York ones who beat them by a mile. H.N. was always surrounded by an entourage of minors since his teenage years, always happy and gay on the go. Some kids were on his most favored nation list, taking them for canoeing and hikes at camp Agudah. He was in charge of the Sunday afternoon Pirchei on Bathurst and Ulster Agudah Shul, where all kinds of games were at the children's disposal, e.g. monopoly, chess n' checkers, ping pong, board hockey, etc. etc. Somewhat later in the Sunday program, Bingo was played and distributed prizes, and at times Tarzan films and such were shown. In the winter after School hours, he took kids to an inside town bath house swimming pool near Adelaide St., where he picked up the tab. Motzei Shabbos, he took kids to the Forest Hill Park skating rink. In later years, he entertained kids over at his basement, around the Burnside Shul, at the time he played Scrabble and whatever else with his favorite and chosen nation, you could not enter unless you carried his VIP card. He used to recruit the kids to Camp Agudah, where he started out as a J.C. to Counsler, to Head Counsler somewhere from the late 50's and the early sixties, as well as being the leader of the opposing team at color War. That particular year, color broke out as someone a D... Lapidus, possibly from the States allegedly drowned and allegedly expired in the Lake's makeshift Swimming pool, an ambulance carried him away, and no sooner did he emerge from the ambulance alive and well and kicking. In the + -1960's, there was a scandal with rumors that H.N. himself was personally involved and an incident took place, whereby he was replaced as J.C. of his designated bunk and put in charge of another Bunk. There was one kid from the bunk, I do not want to mention a name without his consent other than a butchers son, that was going around saying, that all kids were told not to talk about what transpired. I noticed a name here in the Blog that seems as the name of his younger brother, but not sure whether it's him, both living in BPNY. If it is, and recognizes the reference, or anyone else that does, they should try to contact him whether he is willing and able to sing. I believe that many victims, and there were very many, are not willing to bring up past traumas of decades ago and be victimized all over again, something that has been buried deep down in their psyche, away from the public and their families. I feel very much for the victims, although the so called Klei (Kodesh) always stick up for the perpetrator, no matter what, especially if they are well connected, while the victims are muffled and brutally pushed and swept under the rug bleeding profusely. (--See what just happened on the VIN Blog as of NOW!--) They do NOT deal with the victim, shush him up, threaten him with violence, or banned from Cheder, systematically isolate him adding salt to their wounds until they are devastated, heartbroken, and forever hold their peace, many times even before their adult years, either by drugs or committing suicide, or both. Many times I wonder, what is the MEKOR of killing the victim, and METAHER the Perpetrator? Mostly by asking "where are the Plaintiffs"?. Is this Dat Moshe Veyehudis, Das Moshe veyisrael? Has such been the case for Millennium? How did Anshei Sdom Vaamora, Zimri and Pilegesh begivah fare, did Moshe Rabenu and Klall Yisrael or Manhigei Yisrael also cover up, or did what they have to do. Is it because Maasseh Sdom pairs with Chukei Sdom, or rather Maassei Mitzrayim as Eshes Potifar doing a Switcheru. If anyone has the answer, kindly ENLIGHTEN us all. I am at loss. I also wanted to add that often, people are discussing the cases of historical abuse as though the reason they were mishandled in the 1970s was entirely the fault of our lack of understanding about this issue in the 1970s. However, show me proof that the community has handled it better in the 1980s or 1990s or 2000s? The reason it takes thirty or so years for anyone to come forward is because 1. we don't have any education or programs on this in the Jewish schools, so we don't understand it and blame ourselves 2. we are too afraid and ashamed
