Oh the irony of Rep. Turner talking about Jacob O's lengthy detention in a Bolivian facility and the overall egregiousness of his plight. How I wish the interviewer had more time to ask the congressman if he had considered that perhaps the State Department may not quite be the villain in Jacob O's misadventure in light of his country's treatment of detainees.
Inasmuch as detainees in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp (GTMO) are afforded minimal legal protections, are tortured, harshly interrogated, and held for several years, the State Department, upon approaching the Bolivian government to protest the alleged maltreatment of an American detainee, would find itself coming from a weakened position.

SecularBoy, I believe that a real secular would know how to spell “inquiring”.

"Would you prefer he rot in jail without charges forever, or just hung at dawn without trial?"
Seven more months until Jacob O.'s rights are violated under Bolivian law. He is fairing better than a foreign detainee at GTMO.

Regardless, that I have my suspicions about the whole so called “rice venture” the twenty five million dollar is totally accounted, to its financing source in Switzerland, and that is part of the equation, did they tried to launder money. Time will tell.

What is the twisted common denominator for the sickness of you people? It's more than just anti-orthodox hatred when you start bashing the Western world for detaining al Qaeda terrorists
Posted by: Dirty old man | June 13, 2012 at 11:25 AM
no, old man... just wanting justice for all human beings. Justice means getting a trial and being charged with a crime and put in jail to serve a sentence if found guilty. What do you say about the innocents who were later proven innocent but sent off to Syria or the black camps (poland perhaps?) to be interrogated... when they were in fact innocents. If the US wont act as a moral beacon, then how will be able to stand up and demand it of other countries to do the same.

Ostreicher went to Bolivia to make a fortune. His eyes were blinded by millions of dollar signs.
He got involved with people with ties to the drug trade.
Bolivia is a police state under the control of an anti-American dictator, Evo Morales. Morales has cultivated the enemies of the US including Castro and Hugo Chavez. He has romanced the Palestinians and welcomed the Iranians to work and set up bases in Bolivia. Then he broke relations with Israel
Enter a US businessman cum loud mouthed moron who wants to take over Bolivian land in a special deal with people who have drug ties.
Any tears for Ostreicher are wasted.
He knew what he was getting into and because of his immense greed still jumped off the cliff.
Maybe the Iranians can send him to Tehran to face charges on working with the drug cartels.
He should thank his lucky stars that he is still alive and in Bolivia.
No glatt kosher for this hazer.

The sickness is the selective application of the U.S. Constitution by people sworn to support and defend it. FYI, there have been GMTO detainees who have been exonerated and released after several years, having no connection to al-Qaeda. Besides, how efficacious do you suppose torture is in intelligence gathering? How many people do you think would admit to having al-Qaeda connections if they were tortured and isolated for years on end? Jacob O.'s wife maintains her husband is struggling to hold on to his sanity after eleven months -- and he gets visits from family and friends!
But it's not just al-Qaeda terrorists the government is after these days. Last December, the President signed the National Defense Authorization Act that allows this president and all future presidents to order the seizure of any civilian from any battlefield and place him in indefinite detention -- based on suspicion alone -- no charge, no trial.
Congress is going to revisit the NDAA this year, so there is a chance to kill this. Unfortunately it won't be easy because the American public has been programmed over the course of the last ten years to believe that al-Qaeda can take down an aircraft with six ounces of liquids, a pair of knitting needles, and a merkin -- that's how awesome they are.
When American citizens and lawmakers show up on television railing against the Bolivian justice system, Evo Morales reaches into his desk drawer, pulls out his violin and plays a sad tune.

You are delusional if you think that a few ounces of Semtex in an Ayrab's undies won't take down an airliner. You elitists would be the end of us if you got to shut down Gitmo. Yeah, free all the murdering camel jockeys that would fly a plane into a nuclear reactor because a couple of losers who hate America anyway may have been swept up by accident on the Afghan battlefield. Why don't you go brown your nose in Eric Holder's crack?

The hate being spewed on this 'jewish' site is repulsive.
Why compare Guantanimo to Bolivia?
Why prejudge Jacob simply because he he's hasidic?
Why call a man names like 'greedy' and accuse him of "knowing what he got himself into" without even knowing this Mr. Ostreicher?
Is it wrong to try to make a fortune? Immoral? Is it wrong to enlist support
from your countrymen?
Of course it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that most pf the hateful postings on this article seems to be one miserable loser. An evil, reprehensible dim wit who must have some personal vendetta against a family who's loved one deserves a trial.

Why compare Guantanimo [sic] to Bolivia?
There is no comparison. GTMO is far worse than Bolivia. One of the GTMO detainees was detained for wearing this watch. It took our government seven years to repatriate that detainee.
When it comes to detention of foreign prisoners, it's a race to the bottom between the U.S. and Iran -- and the U.S. is winning.
By comparison, Jacob O. is in a veritable Gan Eden. He just needs to be patient and wait for his day in court. I presume that as a business person he performed his due diligence and familiarized himself with the local laws and customs of the business community. If he didn't, then it must suck to be him.

"The hate being spewed on this 'jewish' site is repulsive."
ah, if you haven't noticed, Shmarya's posts have been for the most part sympathetic of JO's plight. what you read down here in the comments section is skepticism. NU was just pointing out a simple fact: Guantanamo denies the US the possibility of claiming the moral high ground on detaining foreign prisoners.
as to JO, from what I can see his family is not complaining that he is being treated differently as a foreigner (or haredi), but that he's being treated the same as any Bolivian who finds themselves in the same situation.

Right, Semtex is so rare and exotic that it's worth violating the rights of people at will. Semtex has a detection taggant, so the obvious solution is DIY.
The ingredients and the s00p3r s3krut recipe for making Semtex are freely available on the web. It can be made right in the kitchen in ten minutes for immediate use.
You elitists would be the end of us if you got to shut down Gitmo.
Four of those detainees were there for wearing a Casio watch. Oooh scary! Three of them were wearing this one. After you get your talking points from Rush Limbaugh today and change your skivvies, you should browse the GTMO detainee list to see how U.S. service personnel use the U.S. Constitution as veritable toilet paper each day at GTMO.
