Moshe Butler, the 33-year-old son of former OU executive vice president Rabbi Raphael Butler (the elder Butler was the chief enabler of notorious child abuser Rabbi Baruch Lanner) was sentenced yesterday to more than five years in federal prison for a series of frauds amounting to almost $2.5 million.

Butler pleaded guilty in April to defrauding Morgan Stanley Smith Barney out of $37,417, and to defrauding two individuals, identified by prosecutors by the initials D.B. and C.W., out of $107,755 in cash and legal fees by writing them bad checks.

Butler committed those crimes while on bail awaiting trial for a different, $2.25 million fraud.

Butler stole the money from hotel and motel chains by selling them flat panel televisions he never delivered.

When customers demanded refunds, Butler frequently responded by sending them bad checks.

He was sentenced to a 57-month prison term for the television scam and 6 months for the other frauds, with the sentences to be served consecutively, for a total sentence 63 months.

Butler was also ordered to pay more than $2.6 million in restitution to cover both schemes, and he was ordered to forfeit an additional $208,172.

After he serves his prison sentence, Butler will serve three years of supervised release.

Butler, a Yeshiva University grad, is the founder of a Jewish addiction rehab program in Florida, where he lived part time.

Butler’s own gambling addiction allegedly pushed him to steal.

But U.S. District Judge William H. Walls would have none of it.

“Society has to be protected from people who promise something and don’t even attempt to deliver. That you are a gambler is not of consequence to me,” the judge said.

I think the crimes he was convicted of, which took place in context of is job as a principal, took place later. The NCSY related incidents addressed by the OU report spanned a period that began far, far earlier than the 90s.
