Rabbi Lavel Schwartz pleaded guilty Thursday in a New Jersey federal court to conspiracy to commit money-laundering, the Associated Press reported.
Schwartz is the fifth haredi rabbi to plead guilty to charges stemming from the massive 2009 sting operation that saw politicians and rabbis arrested, the politicians for public corruption and bribery and the rabbis for money laundering and related charges. (One, rabbi however, was charged with organ trafficking.)
Solomon Dwek, the son of a prominent Syrian haredi rabbi, served as the government’s cooperating witness in the sting.
Rabbi Shaul Kassin, the elderly chief rabbi of North America’s Syrian Jews, was one of the five rabbis arrested.
Schwartz and his brother Rabbi Mordechai Fish agreed to launder money for Dwek, who was wearing an F.B.I. recoding device. $200,000 to $400,000 was laundered by charities connected to the brothers. Dwek received his money back from the brothers in cash, minus a ten percent service fee.
