Jeez, just draw stick figures with skirts or pants. At least then I won't have spooky faceless kids in my book.

soso

That's really, really funny! (if it were not so sad)

Jeff

This is a form of collective psychopathy. There is simply no other way to understand it.

David

Not Jewish. Just some Alien cult. How is this relevant to Failed Messiah if these people aren't even Jewish?

Confused

I am sure that the parents are in an uproar. Someone should report this to the authorities, this has got to be illegal.

Yochanan Lavie

Why are the boys' faces blanked out? Are they, too, sexually enticing?

Why can't the blank space for the girl at least have a name? A label saying "female" is even more insulting?

SkepticalYid

@Confused- your sarcasm aside, are you incapable of seeing how this type of education leads to marginalization of women?

Haimish McHorny

Luckily I've got an old version of that book. The pages are rather sticky by now....

The boys faces are blanked to avoid making graven images and that would be oiver the issur of avoida zora. The Harediban obviously share the view of the holy Quran.

Jeff

Why are the boys' faces blanked out? Are they, too, sexually enticing?

You know the answer to that one.

Jeff

I'm sorry, but when you pot comments like this - which you do, frequently - you completely invalidate your insistence that you are merely opposed to indiscriminate hatred of an entire group. You are what Abracadabra and a few others have labeled you - an apologist for the Haredim, whether or not you consider yourself to be one of them.

No one with an ounce of objectivity would fail to see how damaging this sort of thing is to children, and how it cripples them in terms of their ability to relate to others and to perceive consensual reality.

It is obviously silly (from our perspective), but there is consistency in their belief of no pictures of females. So if one realizes this and grasps just what this implies then there should be no surprise when one sees it.

seymour

this is not only damaging to woman but to buys too

how do they explain this to the children

not really this goes further by no even giving the girls a name, no identity except being a female nothing more

Malka Gittel

And to think I recall stories that MMS demanded that pictures of girls be added to Chabad children's materials. Hasidism is drifting so far that it's torn away from its anchor.

AztecQueen2000

That's the craziest thing I've ever heard of! Now I know not to use this book when I homeschool my girls.

Alter Kocker

Ok so obviously little boys are as sexually enticing as little girls. Therefore in order to maintain purity of the ultra-orthodox male's soul, we propose ritual blinding at bar-mitzvah age. Upon successful completion of the haftarah, the eyesight of the bar-mitzvah boy will be removed either by hot-poker or surgically (new job for the mohel)

No more problems, plus they qualify for disability benefits. Only problem is that they will probably be resistant to learning braille.

SkepticalYid

While it's consistent it's a recent innovation and is also an alarming indication of an intensifying extremism. I seriously doubt you'd be so nonchalant if it were reported from Saudi Arabia or another Islamist state

Eli

I wanted to post a witty comment, but found this too depressing. It's barbaric to raise children this way, so dehumanizing. How can any father of a little girl not feel kicked in the stomach by this?

gevezener chusid

from these pix it looks like the setting is a school, and since schools are segregated by gender it would be natural not to have a picture of a little girl - but they could show someone's burqa clad mother or someone's bubby or something.

As for "marginalization of women" most of my own female family members including my ex-wife are perfectly happy in their haredi lives, so I guess it's different strokes for different folks.

Whether this in a book inculcates "marginalization" or not, it is repulsive because it just isn't right - it's almost impossible to describe just why not - but it isn't. In Genesis it says "male and female He created them" and the notion that the 6 year-olds for whom this book is intended would need to be prevented from seeing a cartoon-like picture of a little girl or another female person is very very spooky to me.

SkepticalYid

Gevezener, were photos of women and girls banned when your ex wife was a child?

Garnel Ironheart

Actually this is quite a progressive textbook. First, it depicts the "girl" has having a book of her own. Isn't teaching girls to read a modern innovation that should be stamped out?
Secondly, she's standing in the same room with the two boys. Isn't that a yichud violation?
Finally, the idea that females exist at all and need their own gender-specific words in Yiddish is itself a huge concession. I don't see why you're so upset.

Yochanan Lavie

Those who know, correct me, but isn't it insulting in Yiddish to call a woman a "nekaivah?" That may not have been the conscious intent of the textbook compilers, but the connotation is there.

Bas Melech

While it's consistent it's a recent innovation and is also an alarming indication of an intensifying extremism.

I don't remember my children's yiddish story books having faces blot out.

It appears that the Gerrer attitude to male and female will become the norm, especially if this stupidity of sexualizing children becomes the norm

Balansen

I think what we have here is that the haredim have equated hyper-segregation with lowering the sex-drive of males, but this is clearly not logical. Hence you arrive at the point where you have protests in bet shemesh by grown men who openly claim to be aroused by pre-pubescent schoolgirls. Someone should explain (in a civil tone) to haredi leaders that hyper-segregation and is not the answer to their sexual nisayons. Perhaps they can be reasoned with.

tonda

@Confused- your sarcasm aside, are you incapable of seeing how this type of education leads to marginalization of women?

Posted by: SkepticalYid

Actually, it looks like they are just one step away from moving women to just a scribble in the margin.

Sarcasm aside, how far can self hate and xenophobia go. Either one on it's own can be self destructive. Both at the same time is just one group psychotic episode away from something really insane.

who knows

Confused, reading you repeated ignorant apologetics I came to conclusion that you are not confused at all. You do have two handicaps though - you are stupid and evil.

Generations of indoctrination and inbreeding.

Fabulous!

כא  הֵם קִנְאוּנִי בְלֹא-אֵל,  {ר}  כִּעֲסוּנִי בְּהַבְלֵיהֶם;  {ס}  וַאֲנִי אַקְנִיאֵם בְּלֹא-עָם,  {ר}  בְּגוֹי נָבָל אַכְעִיסֵם.  {ס}

I wonder if that refers to the Palestinians, the Haredim, or both.

Marrano Chassid

This silliness is the product of people who grew up and live in extreme gender-segregation, and the only emotion of the fairer sex they can relate to is female submissiveness to males.

anuran

Sad to say, women have more of a public place, higher status, more rights and a greater voice in most Muslim countries than in Charedistan.

Skeptical

If this treatment of girls is justifiable because it is "consistent" with other instances of anti-woman bias, would it not be the same to say that honor killing is "consistent" with the tenants of Islam and thus, justified as well?
One other thing that gives me the creeps is the combination of gender segregation and treatment of women as subhuman in combination with the huge families and young marriages. Based on their prior conditioning, I cannot think that any of these brainwashed women get any real enjoyment out of sex, despite being kept constantly pregnant. I shudder to think how many young girls are required to essentially consent to their own rape.
AztecQueen - at some point, you should use this book to home school your daughters, simply to demonstrate what happens when one group of people systematically degrade and disenfranchise another group. It will teach them to fight back if someone refuses to recognize them because they are girls!

David

If these kids grow up only ever seeing pictures of other people with no faces, what might this do the way they view others?

This is also a prelude to wearing full face coverings for women - and it seeems - men.

David

I shudder to think how many young girls are required to essentially consent to their own rape.

Posted by: Skeptical | February 10, 2012 at 03:13 PM

So true. It might not be "rape" in the strictest legal sense, but it is nevertheless.

These women are uneducated and trained for nothing but to become walking wombs. They are forced to marry utter losers who refuse to either work or fight and in addition they are forced to work to support their husbands because the pieces of sh*t refuse to do so because they are too busy "learning" all day. Learning what????

Jeff

Learning what????

Posted by: David | February 10, 2012 at 10:44 PM

If an ox relieves itself in a field, who owns it? If a gentile loses his wallet, are you obligated to return it? If a stranger bakes something questionable in your clay oven, is it treyf?

You know - important stuff.

BeenThereDoneThat

Each generation outdoes the previous one.

I would predict utter chaos within 2 to 3 generations.

It will not self-correct, because the impetuous is not there.

I would say that the advance of technology has accellerated the process, it has caused them to circle their wagons and they live in the rarified air within.

Mark my words.

David

Do any of these US Charedi schools even bother to teach English?

Chrissakes - a.k.a. Nigritude U.

Jeez, just draw stick figures with skirts or pants. At least then I won't have spooky faceless kids in my book.

This is like something out of a crime drama or Silence of the Lambs. If detectives had found this book in Levi Aron's apartment the NYPD would have forwarded it to FBI crime analysts in Quantico.
