Jerusalem Police told Arutz 7 that over the past few days, 10 Gerrer hasidim and 15 Sicarii members were arrested on charges of rioting and damaging private property.

Undercover officers dressed as haredim made the arrests when haredim protesting uniformed police who had entered Mea Shearim began throwing rocks at those uniformed officers.

“The recent riots in the area were actually due to police intervention,” police spokesperson Shmuel Ben-Ruby said. “Ninety five percent of Mea Shearim residents are not involved in these affairs and seek a quiet life. There is a small group of radicals who seek to disrupt the public order. Obviously I cannot list all of the tactics we use, but we are making good progress in dealing with the problem.”

The violence that had rocked Mea Shearim, Beit Shemesh and other haredi communities over the past year is rooted in the fight between Gerrer hasidim and the Sicarii for control of valuable Mea Shearim real estate. Their fight over the Batei Warsaw apartments, built more than 100 years ago as affordable housing for haredi immigrants from Poland, has resulted in beatings, arsons and attempted murders.

The Sicarii claim Ger is trying to force them and other non-Ger residents out Batei Warsaw so the complex can be torn down and rebuilt as modern housing for Gerrer hasidim.

Ger, which originated in Poland, claims the Sicarii, who do not have Polish roots and who operate as a street gang cum mafia, are trying to force them out of Mea Shearim.

Even so, the two warring groups united to attack their common enemy – the police. That led to the arrests made this week.

Police treated Mea Shearim as a no-go zone for several years due the extreme and frequent violence directed at them by haredim if they did enter the haredi neighborhood.

Increased media coverage the war between the Sicarii and Ger, some of it highlighting police inaction and police treatment of Mea Shearim as a no-go zone, may have contributed to the stepped up police presence in the neighborhood and the arrests.

Can one confirm that it was garbage being burned and not cellphones or Bambas. I question this only because they usually burn the garbage while in the trash bin, the picture shown did not show the bin.

I'm not paranoid. I'm not haredi, dear. But Shmarya is definitely out to "prove" that all haredim are thugs, child rapists, thieves, etc.

If you read all that Shmarya writes, with an open mind, you will see that he constantly generalizes about all haredim. When I tried to point out to him that if people would use the same generalizations about blacks, they would be branded racists.

That, of course, made Shmarya mad, (the truth hurts??) and since then he's been calling me different names, which is fine.

Shmarya is intellectually dishonest. I believe Shmarya is in denial, and has so much hate inside him that he cannot see reality if you threw it in his face.

If Shmarya was just pointing out the problems of haredim because he loves them and wants them to improve, he would have done it in a very different way. And you know that.

When I point out that the article states that 95% of Meah Shearim residents do not approve of the violence and "just want to live quiet peaceful lives", a fact about haredim that you wouldn't know from just reading this blog on a constant basis, you get all defensive.
