Yeshiva Students Burn Cellphones, Rabbis Rejoice

Motorola-qa1-cell-phoneYeshiva students from Darkei Shalom Yeshiva in Telz Stone, Israel built a bonfire and burned their cellphones as yeshiva rabbis watched, rejoicing.

Israel: Yeshiva Celebrates Burning Cellular Telephones
Yeshiva World

Perhaps a unique ‘seudas mitzvah’ or a new trend, but whatever the case, bochrim of the Darkei Shalom Yeshiva in Telshe Stone on motzei Shabbos took part in a seudas mitzvah as they called it marking the burning of their cellular telephones.

After a schmooze from the mashgiach of the yeshiva, HaRav Yerucham Schechter, the talmidim collected their cellular telephones and placed them in a collective fire to remove the evil influence from their midst.

According to Chadrei Chareidim, rabbonim of the yeshiva took part in the event, labeled a Seudas Kiddush Hashem.

Rav Zechariah Gruenwald, the founder of the yeshiva added, “A number of years ago, I was involved in a serious vehicular accident and I was spared. On my way here I wondered what saved me. I immediately received the response, that Hashem merited me to see just how students are MeKadesh Shem Shomayim”.

Now this is how we bring Moshiach to us sooner rather than later! Remember Yidden these are not the old days when a cell phone was just a phone. These days it is also a socalled "smart phone" and that is a fancy way of saying that it is a highway to temptations that no bachur should have to face, and we know what that means. Some say they need phones, but when we were kids who among us had cellphones? And we turned out right.

And we turned out right.

Yeah, you turned out right.

How about a good old fashioned book burning?

Heinrich Heine said:

"Whenever they burn books, they will, in the end, burn people.

The same logic applies to cell phoens and relgiious fanatics of any flavor.

theese mindless ones dont care if they burn theese phones that when burned emit a pisenous chemical no brains at all just fixated on nonsense they dont create anything so they go and destroy something that can be used for a good purpose can even save lifes in an emegency what has fanatacism bought us nothing but stupidity.

Ah, I remember the yeshiva as well as the founder. They are more famous for having the first male chastity belts in their dormitories.

From YWN:

Basically they are a Yeshiva for At-Risk kids. Looks like they are pretty successful. Seems to be a positive place.

What, in their world, does a kid do to qualify as "at-risk"? Wear a knitted kippah (chos v'sholem!)?

Actually I think this is great. I've got 3 old cellphones left around the house from all the times I've upgraded and I've always wondered what the best way to get rid of them was. They're pretty useless as paper weights.

I was thinking along those lines. When I upgraded to my iPhone 4S, Sprint offered me $5 for my old phone. I decided to keep it in case my phone is in for repairs. I still have a collection of phones from the past that I still have around. Maybe I will clean house next pesach when I burn my chometz.

I would not be surprised if some, if not all, the students did just that. Burn their old models and keep hidden their active phone.

All this makes no sense since I am sure that they can sell their phones and get the money and still make a statement. Maybe burn their cellular bills as a sign of their phone independence.

Someone must have videotaped this spectacle. If anyone finds it on YouTube please post the link.

Garnel, you can donate them to organizations that collect them for women's shelters, and other similar charitable causes. It's easy to use Google to find them in your area.

(Somewhere, there's probably a frum organization collecting them for yeshiva bochurs whose cell phones were burned by their rebbaim.)

I'd love to burn my verizon blackberry, that thing gave me more grief than I care to remember.

highway to temptations that no bachur should have to face

Really, this is about as asinine a statement as I’ve read – but I suppose when you break it down, it’s the best one can expect from a sock puppet.

First of all, I see very attractive women every day of my life, and have yet to succumb to temptation and tried to seduce even one of them.  I have a 4G smartest of the smart phones, and have never used it to download or view porn – not even once.

On that subject – if you are so drawn by temptation, I ask again – why are on a computer connected Internet (which is FAR more conducive to “temptation” and Porn than is a smart phone)?

Oh wait – I forgot, you are not real.  (Which is why I care nothing for your opinion as to why “frum” Jews don’t appear capable of dealing with life’s simple temptations)

I'd love to burn my verizon blackberry, that thing gave me more grief than I care to remember.

That what you used to type and justify your use of "nigger lover"?

It's a poor carpenter that blames his tools.

'Basically they are a Yeshiva for At-Risk kids. Looks like they are pretty successful. Seems to be a positive place.'

Now the students are really at-risk. Cell phones today are necessary for safety for people of all ages. If a bachur finds himself in the middle of a hafganah how is he going to notify the Rabbis that he is in trouble or all right?

Also, how are parents going to contact them? Did you ever try calling a dorm phone?

I grew up before cell phones. Today I am happy they exist.

When will rabbis treat adults as adults?

These Rabbis spend most of the day learning Torah. It should make them smarter. All it does is make them lose their common sense.

Surely I am not alone in thinking this statement remarkable. How did he "receive the response"?

I have a 4G smartest of the smart phones, and have never used it to download or view porn – not even once.

That's what computers are for :)

It is unfortunate that this 'rabbi' was saved from the car accident - only to poison the minds of young ones. It is another case of the blind leading the blind. These taliban 'rabbis' are the things which should be burned alive!

Jeff, that's a great idea!

(See how much better you function on your meds?)

Waiting4Moshiach,

Now, because of this, I am truly inspired to become religious again!

It all just makes sense.

Yechi Hamelech!!!

Not.

Yeshiva boys should not have cell phones because it distracts their minds from learning. Upon leaving yeshiva for lunch or going home, time would be better spent reviewing their days Torah learning instead of catching up on phone messages.

The Rabbi(s) teach something and the students have a way to fact check it. Bad!

The Rabbi(s) teach something and the students must rely on a single source reguardless of how outlandish or incorrect. Good!

Of course they want to control all devices (smartphones, computers, etc) that can let anyone do independant research. Independant research leads to independant thought. Can't have that.

So while the phones burned did they dance around the flames and then had a good old fashioned orthodox circle jerk? (Or did the rebbes just use their mouths)

If they beieve it wrong to carry a cell phone why did they have one in the first place!!

Maybe Haredim ought to also ban automobiles, or any kind of technological device since it can lead to sin (e.g, visiting a hooker).

If they beieve it wrong to carry a cell phone why did they have one in the first place!!

Posted by: formerly frum | November 21, 2011 at 01:42 PM

They make it up as they go...

since they cannot control themselfs or dont trust themselfs to not use the phone when its wrong to use it they take a short cut they destroy it, i have the feeling is the reason they did this is they dont work and the economy is bad no money no honey so they go and fabricate this scenario to get publicity what a bunch of loosers.

Question. If cellphones and computers are so evil, why do they sell them in their stores? Or are they only evil for THEIR kids?

If that is the case, isn't selling an "evil" cellphone to a goy kid the exact same thing as selling any other evil poduct?

So how can you consider yourself a "righteous and good man" for selling an evil product to anyone?

In that case, Haredi that sell cellphones and computers are no better than pornographers and drug dealers.

Will the Rabbis call for the removal of cellphones and computers from stores?

There are better things to get excited about rather than phone burnings. These people should get out more.

Honestly, I think that is exactly the issue. That's the real reason, what they are really afraid of. They obfuscate by implying it's some sort of concern about illicit sex, because who would want to be seen arguing in favor of that. They are hoping no one suspects that they are really worried about "foreign" ideas. After all, they ban plenty of books that have nothing to do with sex!

I wonder if he text messaged all his students to come to this holy event

I was laughing pretty hard when I read this story. Notice the name of this yeshiva. DARKEI SHALOM. It should be named YESHIVA OHEV BAL TASCHIS

Were they inspired by Rabbi Sack's attack on Iphones?

wow! can you imagine being married to a man who rejoices when a cell phone is burned? omg

Dear waiting,

You folks need to learn some impulse control. Your rabbis have no self-control whatsoever...

Surely I am not alone in thinking this statement remarkable. How did he "receive the response"?

Probably on his cell phone.

Jeff, that's a great idea!

Posted by: Garnel Ironheart | November 21, 2011 at 12:54 PM

Fuck you, Garnel. Seriously.

that's funny jeff...on his cell phone

Not as silly as you think.

Yankel has 68 mobile phones for sale on ebay, although all have smoke damage and some are a bit melted. Prices start from 99 cents.

I would love to know whether the rabbis overseeing this fiasco tossed in their cell-phones as well. I betcha they didn't!!

Where's Levi when you need him. Sorry Cat Stevens.

Mobiles have melted, like a big korban
Blackberry is silent, like the first day
Praise for the silence, praise for the burning
Praise for the release of carinigenic toxins into the world.

(Levi, go to an advertising house and get a big fat wage for jingles, you are very talented.)

Sick...did it ever occur to them that they can be donated to victims of domestic violence or soldiers who are away from home?

Honestly I wish everyone would burn their cell phones. I can't stand their noise and I can't stand watching people having loud conversations with themselves. When I was young, people who had conversations with themselves were either institutionalized or on Star Trek.

Thanks, Steven. Your parody is a good one.

Thanks, but no, it's shit. You are really good. You should be getting paid bit time for your talents.

WHere is Levin, Zwibel & Drek on this issue? What about the Concert Ban & Indian Wig Ban 'rabbis'? Why don't they chime in with their 2 cents on this holy issue? You people are sick. What a disgusting religion.

Sick...did it ever occur to them that they can be donated to victims of domestic violence or soldiers who are away from home?

Posted by: Chuzpah | November 21, 2011 at 06:21 PM

The answer would be A) There is no domestic violence in Haredi land; B) The soldiers are frei yidden, and it's forbidden to help them.

Good thing they burned the cellphones. Next time somebody gets in an accident they won't be able to call for help.

side note whatever happened to the Kolben Dance Group Sunday dance

I wonder if these idiots realize how toxic the fumes must have been.

I guess they feel they where doing gods work so they cannot be harmed

I-phones? Sacks probably has a remez for his not-so-smart chiddush: I = selfishness + Phone = a phone that is for selfish people. I wonder if he goes to a full-service gas station, since he does not wish to be "self-serving." Ha!

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that Haredism and Hasidism both suffer from Orthodox Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

lack of law they should be fined for pollution and nuisance.

If hashem had wanted us to have cell phones she would have attached them to our bodies upon birth.

Same for torah. If she had wanted us to learn torah she would have had it implanted in our asses so that we could both sit and learn.

See how easy it is to be haredi.

If hashem wanted us not to lie, cheat, and steal, she would have mentioned it in the torah. But since, according to the frumma, it is not mentioned, therefore, it is ok to lie, cheat, and steal.

Why the brouhaha over this matter? You yokels must be entirely bored to death...

Whatever my dear rabbinite of the Dark Side of the Jewish world.
Dont call me, I wont be calling you.

Why the brouhaha over this matter? You yokels must be entirely bored to death...

The point isn't they banned phones at the yeshiva. It isn't really important that they had a little bonfire.

The issue is that instead of just announcing a school policy and moving on, there was a media event and grand posturing by the Rabbi about it.

The entire event was engineered to get the most media facetime possible. More facetime equals more influence. Influence in both political and religious spheres. And accordingly, even more media facetime. And not to mention, more followers and more money.

But as to the responces here. If a crackpot uses a public event to spread his insanity, sane people will inevitably use public forums like this to mock him, his followers, and his apolgists.

If the day comes that nobody can ridicule and mock extremeists and asses when they show themselves, then we are all in trouble. That includes jews, muslims, christians, et al.

And boy is there pleanty lately worth mocking.

Insanity practiced by an individual is a mental disease. Insanity precticed by a group is a religion.

wow! can you imagine being married to a man who rejoices when a cell phone is burned? omg

No, I can't. Oh, but I think you were giving a woman's perspective here.

You can't burn cell phones, usually there is lead in the solder; heavy metals in the battery packs, who knows what nasty organics will outgass from the plastics. This is MADNESS to create such a secanah, as well as baal tashchit. Just give, donate or sell them. better yet, don't buy it in the first place if it isn't good for you. i just don't see the point of such histrionic displays.

Or take them to a recycling and reclamation center for safe disposal.

Darth Schneerson knows how to save from death, you know.

But yeah, the cell phone ban is an attempt to cut off communication. It makes the students slightly more isolated and less likely to stumble upon this blog.

Tonda: "Question. If cellphones and computers are so evil, why do they sell them in their stores? Or are they only evil for THEIR kids?

Who are you, Tonda? One of the fundamental tenets of Judaism is that goyim and Yidden are fundamentally different since Moshe received the Law. What is good and bad for Jews is not necessarily good and bad for goyim. This is eternal. Jews have hundreds of mitzvot imposed on them by Hashem that are not imposed on goyim. According to the Tanya and Chabad, goyim and Jews have completely different natures.

Who are you, Tonda? One of the fundamental tenets of Judaism is that goyim and Yidden are fundamentally different since Moshe received the Law.

That is exactly my point. Here is a group of people who by beleif, tradition, and tenet beleive that they are superior than others, and that being so, have the right to cheat, steal from, or otherwise abuse them. But will be the first to scream anti-semitism when that group refuses to play along by their rules, or call them on THEIR prejudices. Ome mitzvot God missed was "thou shall not be a hypocrate".

The beleif that God allows only them to use, abuse, and mistreat everyone else because of a two thousand year old book is far worse than any individual mistreating a jew because it is institutional and systematic. Refusing to be a sheep to appease someone elses religious beleifs is not anti-semetic. It's simply an act of individual freedom.

And please note, the above does not apply to all jews, or only to jews. It applies to anyone hiding behind religion to mistreat or otherwise abuse another group.

According to the Tanya and Chabad, goyim and Jews have completely different natures.

they sound like Hitler and Nazis

The Tanya is not a Jewish book. It is a new testament of a dead messiah religion.

@seymour

"they sound like Hitler and Nazis"

And you lose the argument..............

Evil analogy.

This article made me throw up in my mouth.

In other news, after a shmooze from R' Jack Mehoff from Yeshivas Biah Shelo Kedarcho, students neutered themselves as the Rabbis watched, rejoicing. As Rabbi Mike Rophone said, "we thought we would get a nice reaction from the boys after the speech but we never saw this coming!". He then chortled and said, "Freudian slip since none of these boys will ever 'come' again". "I have never been so proud" said R'Mo Lester, with tears running down his face. "This is truly chevlay moshiach".

cell phones cause tumors... dont you people have other stuff to do like masterbate or work ?

not all all, if the shoe fits as they say

they might not want to solve the issues and problem like Hitler but they do agree on the root of the issue

goyim and Jews have completely different natures
Aryans and Jews have completely different natures

tanya a goy cannot do good even if they do a good it is not what it seems

i did not say that the tanya teaches that

not all all, if the shoe fits as they say

If they didn't slaughter 6 million people, it doesn't fit.

Period.

goyim and Jews have completely different natures
Aryans and Jews have completely different natures

Evel Knievel couldn't make that jump.

Bottom line – the casual reader of this blog never posts, he/she just reads, and if you are “out crazying” the crazy – you lose.  Comparing anyone to Hitler is a prime example of “out crazying” the crazy.

It's called Godwin's law. and it basically says the first person to mention Hitler or the Nazis, not in direct reference to the Shoah, loses the thread.

To Seymour,

Sorry to tell you, but Zalman of Liadi is not in the top one hundred Jewish teachers of all time list. The other people ahead of him should be heeded more. During the period of my detailed research into all the Jewish sects in 2002/2003 I read the Tanya and it did not resonate. Reading it again not long ago, it still did not resonate, not because I am too limited but because the author was limited. For an experienced mountain climber it is more of a mild interest piece. Doesn’t really help much at all to get higher on the mountain.

To Yochanan Lavie,

On my computer I have a series of photos of interesting scenes from around the world. Two of the photos in sequence when they scroll are instructive. The first one is a detailed line drawing of the Vilna Gaon, circa 1760. The second is of a modern day Papua New Guinean tribesman in full feather head gear and face paint at a Highland singsing. Both would be of a similar age, around 40 y.o. Both look healthy, proud, fit and intelligent. Both look like decent men. When I first made this photo montage/juxtaposition about ten years ago I thought that the only real difference between the two of them was their education. One had years of study of the ancient Holy Books of Judaism whilst the other was versed in bushcraft and tribal customs. Neither was "lesser" than the other.

Genetics is interesting however. I do think that some people can pass on better genes than others, i.e. a tradition of intellectual brilliance may become a dominant gene but the factor of conditioning from birth is underrated. I think the brains of nearly all children are pure, innocent and free at birth and we can bring nearly everyone "up" to a certain level. Thus the "goy has a different soul" theory is inherently wrong. Yet some people suit certain roles more than others. It is a very interesting subject.

I am aware of your points and you lose when you defend people who claim superiority simply because they are born Jews. and really think there is a biological difference between a goy and a Jew

The person did not say we may grow up better because of education religion background. No it is in the blood neshama or whatever other nonsense the person wants to us.

Once you start saying that, good things do not happen.

Evel Knievel couldn't make that jump.

go back to a frum school and read tanya and many other seforim

remember according to most poskin one should not desecrate shabbos to save a Goy and the only reason they permit it, is because harm may come to Jews
