An Israeli wig company has started a wig leasing program so haredi women can try out new wigs before purchasing them. The lease includes full maintenance and styling services, and costs about $75 per month.

The lease includes full maintenance and styling services, and costs about $75 per month. Wigs can be swapped during the lease period, as well, so women can wear many different styles and colors.

Why would a wig company do this?

Because a nice wig starts at about $1600 dollars, that's why. And haredi men are loathe to buy them for their wives because of that cost. And that pushes women into wearing tichels, the hair coverings that fit like a tam or a beret but which are often made out of scarf-like material.

Most haredi rabbis have already stated their halakhic preference is for women to wear these rather than wigs. (You can read more about that in my commentary posted here.)

Tichels start at about $25 dollars, need no styling services and can be washed at home.

But the cost of wigs has made them a status symbol in the haredi world and a desired fashion item.

Wig leasing allows women who otherwise could not afford a wig, or who can only afford one, to wear many nice wigs over the course of the lease and to compete with her richer neighbors.

Expect some sort of a ban from haredi rabbis sometime soon.

Even though I'm not a Sefardi or a Hungarian, the no vote makes more sense to me. But since it's my wife's head, she usually wears a tiechal, and a sheitel when she gets dressed up.

Why would I open my mouth and maybe cause myself trouble? And why would anyone who's not frum care? Haredi Jewistan is a class society. So that means that most haredi chicks of moderate means wear correspondingly cheap sheitelach. Indeed, many wear kerchiefs (tichles) or even snoods. As to the cost of the wigs, just look at the cheap head mops that predominate in most haredi ghettos! So I hardly think that children being deprived on account of expensive wigs is a common phenomenon anywhere.

I guess you spoke to the few, the lucky, you need to ask a better sampling... it is a well known fact that many single girls patronize African-American hair extension experts and pray for the day they can "legitimately" (for religious reasons of course)wear a wig. There's lots of hair thinning out there. And, many women who don't have the problem when young and single, develop it not too long after keeping their hair covered 24/7 anyway.
