That was actually a good attempt at beginning to describe what's going on in Ramapo. Usually the local news washes over any issues concerning New Square very quickly. Everyone here knows there are many illegal yeshivas, but there are apparently more than I'd realized. The approach is always build first, then maybe - maybe - institute safety measures when caught. Finally, some actual reporting.

I always have a problem when the Charedim are referred to as "religious". Ritualistic, yes. Religious, no.

If they were truly religious they would follow the Torah and not make it up as they go. E.g. where in to Torah does it say you can break the laws of the country in which you live? In fact, it says the opposite, but they do it all the time.

The report uses Ramapo and New Square interchangeably and is totally incoherent to anyone who doesn't know the community. For instance, the school in the house depicted in the piece is actually five miles away from New Square.

Zoning laws are violated carte blanche, only because of substantial political opwer. Where elections are decided by one percentage point or less, a block vote of thousands means a lot.

To put this place in perspective it is 0.4 square miles with a population density of 19,500 per square mile. By contrast, the population of Hong Kong is 16,500 per sqaure mile and Taiwan is 17,000 per square mile.

One thing that the reporter got right...this only scratches the surface of the problems in Ramapo. It is the leaders of New Square that are the problem, not the rank and file who live there.

Likewise, it is the filthy politicians who are responsible for the illegal Yeshivas, etc. They are bought and paid for. Disgusting!

I know where Patagonia is. It's my favorite part of the world. But most of it is desolate, and if Argentina and Chile add a few thousand Hasids, they'll still be outnumbered manyfold by sheep.

So give 'em a town on a bypass of Argentina Highway 40 somewhere between El Calafate and Rio Turbio, Argentina, which is on the Argentine - Chilean border and is the coldest place in all South America. There's lots of snow in the winter so the Hasids will feel just as at home as they would in Belarus or Ukraine.

As for Baffin Island, I'm beginning to feel a better spot would be the Ungava Peninsula, which has a huge population of reindeer, a tiny population of people, and has been mentioned seriously as a place where Siberian tigers can be transplanted. Those tigers need to vary their diet to grow big and strong, and to be fruitful and multiply.

There has to be more to their power than just the block vote. Maybe local politicians kiss their smelly tucheses for just the block vote, but for a statewide or even nationwide influence (such as Hillary and the Skverer pardons), there must be a ton of money 'donated' to politicians.
