Video: Floodwaters Tear Through Bungalow Colonies, Camps, 1 Dead

Flood Post-Hurricane Fleischmans NY 8-28-11 Massive flooding in Fleischmans and in other locations north of New York City. An elderly haredi woman was killed when a old motel she was staying in was ripped from its foundations and floated away.

Fleischmans, NY. (VIN claimed this video was of campers being safely evacuated, but as you can see, it is a video of campers playing around in the flood water with no regard for weakened trees and power lines):

You know a camp with a Citgo Gas station on its grounds? OBVIOUSLY this is NOT a camp! Yes they are young people, perhaps summer bungalow colony dwellers - the article does NOT say these are evacuated campers. It just says "Over twenty five families with children were evacuated from area motels on Main Street to the Satmar Boys Camp which is located on higher ground in Armstrong Park. Fifty boys from the camp who were being housed in area motels were also evacuated safely to the camp."

Obviously since it's a Motel there might be OTHER FAMILIES there too - beyond the the 25.

So why must you assume and twist and find what to criticize? There is plenty to criticize w/o having to fudge the facts!

barukh dayan haemet. how sad!

In BOLD letters just above the video it says:

Now apologize.

Now apologize.

He'll have to ask his rebbe first whether he should.

++...were evacuated from area motels on Main Street to the Satmar Boys Camp ...++

Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

From the looks of all the photos and videos on VIN, these bungalows and 'camps' look like pieces of sh!t that are ready to fall apart even on a normal day.

In a perfect world, shtreimels would turn into flotation devices in times of emergency. Until then expect the naive ultra-orthodox, who don't know how to swim, read or listen, to be natural disaster victims in greater to their population ratio. God watch out for their souls, because they don't know how.

Prayers for the woman and all the other victims of Hurricane Irene.

Not to seem heartless at all but on any scale the event proved not to be as bad as many people thought. Based on kPa, wind speed, longevity and intensity it was probably the 54th most damaging hurricane ever to hit the continental states. I, like many others I'm sure, watched the course of Irene very closely from Friday onwards. What looked like a category 3 monster hurricane petered out to a tropical storm. Of course there is an enormous bill waiting and lots of cleaning up to do but this was not another Katrina. President Obama was also on his toes early and FEMA has done a good job. The interesting thing to note was that many people, even in swinging, party hard, materialist New York responded to the calls for caution. From the look of the deserted streets they were almost overcompensating as if they were really scared of what may befall them. Some fear is a good thing. Anyway, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. I'm sure many people are feeling better, more hopeful and positive today in the USA and around the world than they were feeling on Thursday. Things feel less heavy and pressured. The barometer has risen.

The issue of whether or not natural events are related to G-d is a fascinating subject. There is not enough space here for me to discuss my views in detail suffice to say the first, tenth, eleventh and twelfth articles of faith are relevant.

Something about the relationship between collective and individual responsibility...

There is this nagging feeling inside most of us, calcified sociopaths exempted, no matter how much we try and bury it that wonders when a difficult situation arises..."What can I do about this situation ?" and "Is there anything I can do to change the situation ?" As Erich Fromm described one of the two of the four components of love are care, i.e. active concern and responsibility, i.e. a willingness to act and intervene. When we feel we can change the world and there are options we feel empowered. I'm sure G-d cares about us but he wants to also see if we really empathise and care about each other and are not just pretending to. Orientation and intent is everything. Healthy people with some sense of balance and structure in their lives when they put their head down at night will think about all the people they care about around them. Some people’s arc of concern extends no further than their bank balance or the face they see in the mirror in the morning. Didn’t the Baal Shem Tov say to a follower when asked “Where is a person ?”...”A person is where his will is !” What’s the point ? G-d really does know our secret thoughts and feelings.

On one of the many websites I have been in the habit of visiting the last eleven years a lady on the West Coast of America made a warm, kind and really heartfelt comment on Sunday. This was amongst all the friendly ribbing about “Our natural disasters are bigger than yours” etc. She said that she was praying for the people on the East Coast and said that many people would be there for their countrymen if they needed them. Many people knock America but I have always believed that Americans are some of the most generous people on the Planet.

G-d bless America !

Prayers to all the victims of the storm.

When the tree fell over the campers sounded like excited chimps.

Its gonna be said so it might as well be me - Irene was a message from the Lord Almighty because New York supports gays.

Hashem , have mercy. We can surely see Hashems message here. A catagory 1 Hurricane comes, 19.8 million people live in NYS and only 2 fatalities. And who are they? 2 chasidishe yiddin.

It hit virginia, and that state does not support gay marriage. Can we please stop it with the gay-bashing? This was a hurricane. Is every hurricane a message from God to stop promoting gay rights?

It must be Anti-Semitism.

HOW FUNNY!THEY LEAVE MILLION DOLLAR MANSIONS TO LIVE IN RAMSHAKLE HUTS.AND THEN GET DROWEN LIKE FISH..ALL ALO NE,WHERE WERE THE ZADIKLACH DER KINDERLACH/WHY DID THEY LEAVE ALONE AN ELDERLY MOTHER?EVERYONE WAS ALERTED DAYS AHEAD FOR THE IMPENDING HURRICANE.
IDIOTS.

To A.Yid,

We don't know if she was left alone. You shouldn’t assume that scenario. Some elderly people are very independent and resist outside help. I know of a 98 y.o. man and his wife who are quite happy living at home. (But they have a great family support network.) Obviously there are many cases of people being isolated in certain communities. The problem in a fracturing society is the breakdown of connections. Without authentic connection to other human beings we are nothing. In Asia it is crowded but you are never alone. In many Western nations the concept of community has been eroded to be replaced by the false gods of materialism, narcissism, hedonism and ultimately nihilism.

Comment Rule No. 5 does not seem to apply to the host, yet again.

Shmarya,

How can you claim to be a journalist, and at the same time comment on this video that it shows "campers playing around in the flood water with no regard for weakened trees and power lines".

The first part of this video is very clearly Main St of Fleischmanns, NY at the corner of Lake St, right by the Fire Department. These boys are walking down the STREET, from their dormitory on Main St to the Satmar Camp on Lake St which is on higher ground. They are clearly evacuating from the lower grounds of Fleischmanns to the higher grounds, and are walking DOWN THE STREET. Nothing about this video shows them "playing around in flood water". It shows them doing the right thing and evacuating from the more dangerous parts of Fleischmanns.

The second part of the video shows the river that runs down the center of Fleischmanns, which is usually very small. It runs along Lake St from Oppenheimers Hotel, down to Main St, and then runs along Main St down to the hotel where the lady was killed (at the corner of Depot St.

Both Oppenheimers Hotel, and the Satmar camp, are on Lake St overlooking the river. I don't know which part of Lake St this was taken from, but it is probably from Satmar Camp, which is closer to the river than Oppenheimers. (And it looks like this video was taken by Satmar members)

Anyone who knows the layout of Fleischmanns will agree that everyone on Main St had to evacuate to higher ground, which would be either Oppenheimers Hotel and Satmar Camp on Lake St, or the bungalows along Switzerland Ave and Old Halcott Rd. The only way they would have been able to get their would have been by WALKING THROUGH MAIN ST AND LAKE ST as you see in the video.

Thanks.

Here is another video of Fleischmanns. As you can see, virtually the entire lower Fleischmanns is under water.

The end of the video shows Main St by the Gas Station, at the corner of Lake St right by the Fire Station (you cannot see the Fire Station in the video). That is where the boys were walking through the water to get to higher ground.

, but as you can see, it is a video of campers playing around in the flood water with no regard for weakened trees and power lines

Speaking of Morons - where do you see them "playing around etc"? I see them making their way through the waters.

Oh, man, nobody seems to remember the blizzard this past winter... The chassidim in Boro Park were out there the second it stopped snowing, playing in the abandoned cars, screaming.... They obviously love disaster
