unfortunately, this is an all too common occurrence in charedi communities where most families have many many children who roam around unsupervised or supervised by the immediately older sibling. tragic.

Stan, and do you think that to a family with 2 kids and a dog... such a thing can't happen?
Posted by: the dude | August 16, 2011 at 06:54 AM
of course it can happen! but when a family has exponentially more children (for example, 10 versus 2 & a dog) it becomes much more difficult to supervise the young ones & thus chances of these accidents are much greater. couple that w/ the tradition of the overwhelmed mothers delegating supervision to siblings & its a recipe for disaster. why is that so difficult for you to comprehend? what are YOU smoking?

Jancsipista -
They are allowed to have as many as kids as they want PROVIDED they dont game or defraud the system and, more importantly, keep an eye on them. Some of these families keep these kids like pets.

Until they ban cars from the village, these tragedies will happen again and again.

Given the very small area of the village, 3 deaths in 18 months seems extremely high.
The slanders being posted here at a time of tragedy are at best utterly tasteless. If the stricken family was at all likely to be reading them, I'd say outright cruel.

From the landan's Shiu today we heard why this tragedy happened. God wanted to send us a message to co-operate with the investigating into what is possibly Skvere rabbi involvement in the arson attack.
Posted by: lamdan | August 16, 2011 at 09:18 AM
I do think Stan is correct. And lets stop the apologetics. The court of reason informs us that tkaing care of 6 small children is much more difficult than taking care of 2 small children. AIts not a matter of anyones fault, but taking care of 6 small children and of a house is much harder than taking care of a family of 3 kids spaced by design.
One sees frum families of 6-7 little children under the age of 8 a split second of absent mindedness can lead to a tragedy.
The propoganda tells us that big families are wonderful, rewarding and so on , but what they don't tell you is the down side especially if you are poor and can not afford help.
Tragedies like this can occur anywhere but they have become part of the routine in Charedi neighborhoods.

kids sometimes run out in teh streets just most of teh time they are lucky, however not in this case
They just need to train the kids never ever go on the streets. Nor one foot.
This migt sound weird
but people train their dogs not to go on the street
the way it is done that every time the owner and dog go to the end of the sidewalk they stop and make the dog sit. After about 30 seconds the owner says go and only then will they cross.
If you do it consistently the dog will stop and every intersection on its own
Posted by: seymour | August 16, 2011 at 09:28 AM
Frumma drivers do not have to obey speed limits, either.
Speed limits are one of those laws that are only for goyem.
As long as you can get away with it, it's not a crime.
And if somebody gets injured or killed, than you blame the goyisha police for not enforcing the law.

A densely populated village can also be referred to as a ghetto.
Posted by: chutzpah | August 16, 2011 at 09:45 AM
It's a horrible tragedy. This has NOTHING to do with being Haredi or having 8 kids. This MAY have something to do with living in too densely populated areas, but this issue affects many other groups, areas, etc. as well. Stop the hate and start having empathy for those who can't afford to live in more upscale conditions.

That's why every parent teaches their kid how to cross the street. I just hope this man tried, or he will have quite a heavy load on his conciense.
Personally, I've been to New Square, and kids are running across the street, throwing things across the street, cars are speeding 40 down a tiny residential street.... but what do they ban? Short socks and low cut blouses.
For shame!

Common Sense's blog name is an oxymoron b/c (s)he has none. My comment @ 648am that started this thread was not hateful. I was just pointing out that these incidents occur @ an alarmingly higher rate in the charedi community. THIS IS A FACT. Yes it is partially due to dense population but if you think overwhelmed parents (usually the mom) w/ 2 eyes having to watch 8 to 12 kids isnt a primary reason, youre completely out to lunch. I grew up not far from NS. On many occasions, I personally witnessed children (much younger than Leiby Kletzky) walking alone on very busy streets & intersections. Often you wd see 2 siblings, a 6 yr old girl tasked w/ babysitting his 4 yr old brother. Of course this is tragic. My comment was simply sociological in nature. If they want to have 9 kids- great - but create a safe, supervised environment for them.

Stan...you are saying that for a fact, these incidents occur at a higher rate among Haredim than compared to a black ghetto, for example?...Where is your evidence? I think you need some data, and I am
Calling you on it-show it!
Posted by: Common Sense | August 16, 2011 at 12:11 PM
it's as much a fact as shootings occurring @ a higher rate in drug infested neighborhoods (like "black ghetto" you referred to earlier), motorcycle fatalities being @ a higher relative rate than car fatalities, lung cancer being more prevalent among smokers, and head injuries occuring more frequently in bicyclists who dont wear helmets, just to name a few examples. Many things are God's will but sometimes ppl help make their own luck. ppl who have many many children w/out sufficient resources, energy, intelligence, and/or eyes/ears to supervise them, will run a higher risk of accidents occuring to their children. It's basic statistics. Not everything that is factual requires data. I can look @ 10 cats in one yard and 2 cats in another yard & let you know w/out data which homeowner is more likely to have a dead cat on the roadside. it's just "common sense".
Posted by: Stan | August 16, 2011 at 12:30 PM
Common Sense, I too, have witnessed dozens and dozens of young kids (2-5 years) playing in their small driveway along Route 306 in Monsey without adult supervision or maybe one older sibling watching them all. Many times I have witnessed a "near miss" when a kid runs into the street. Babies are left alone outside in strollers with no adults around. I have been tempted to call the police but didn't want to get involved.
Posted by: devorah | August 16, 2011 at 01:03 PM
Except that you said, " these incidents occur @ an alarmingly higher rate in the charedi community. THIS IS A FACT"....
When one uses such terms as "fact" and allege the incidents "occur at a higher rate", one needs to support this with evidence. After all isn't it a fact? And ifthere is a rate, then what is the rate?
Posted by: Common Sense | August 16, 2011 at 01:20 PM
Devorah - according to Common Sense, your eye-witness accts are worthless w/out supporting data. Let all the apologists like him/her bury their heads deeper into the sand so they dont have to read abt the next tragedy.
Posted by: Stan | August 16, 2011 at 01:21 PM
I'm not saying that there aren't issues with supervision or overcrowding in NS, I'm just saying that, for example, in a university classroom, if you were to make an allegation against an entire group, you better have some solid proof before you throw an entrie group under the bus. Otherwise, it constitutes hate.
Posted by: Common Sense | August 16, 2011 at 01:23 PM

Stan-you need to chill a little(alot). There was a tragedy here, and you offered up a personal opinion. Thats fine- leave it alone. This isnt the forum for the debate on large charaidi families. I remember visiting my uncle Manfred in Monsey when I was little, and seeing the same carefree attitude amongst the MO families too

There IS data on high rate shootings in drug infested areas. Each year a report comes out which precincts has the highest crimes.
There is also statistics about car accidents and motorcycle fatalities and all the rest you mentioned there is data.
But i never heard of statistics that people who have MANY MANY MANY MANY children run a higher risk of car accidents.
So therefore its just a FACT without any backup.
But its a good tactic to be able to point out that frum people have MANY MANY MANY MANY MANY CHILDREN as if its a crime. You can just say it without making up facts.

You silly trolls
What does section 8 and other programs got to do with any of this?
If anything, I attribute the accident to lack of focus by all responsible parties (the father and the driver).
So yes, even the 'upper echelons of society' have proven to be trolls. So from here on I will view myself as a commenter on par with the rest of you. Wow! Quite an accomplishment...

I said that there IS data on it you so you giving us the pool comparison. In other words its NOT a fact but your assumption.
There are better ways to bash frum people then stating that they have many many many many many many many many children. No need to make up facts because of it.
Posted by: Deremes | August 16, 2011 at 03:06 PM
"according to Common Sense, your eye-witness accts are worthless w/out supporting data. Let all the apologists like him/her bury their heads deeper into the sand so they dont have to read abt the next tragedy."
Well, I could get out of my car, take a picture of the unsupervised kids, and be stopped/accosted by their "safety officer" like what occured in KJ.

Blame the Jews!
Regardless what the story is about... if you want to comment on this site - make sure you blame the damn Jews. Otherwise your an ignorant fool who can't "process" anything.
Frum Jews are known to not value human life. That's why they drive over 2 year old children and kidnap kids so they can chop them up.
They learn how to do these things in the Talmud and the Tanya.
If you think I am wrong. Open your eyes. Every frum Jew you see is a blood thirsty person waiting to kill you and your kids.
So... "Hide your kids, hide your wife"
The only solution is to set up concentration camps and systematically kill each and everyone of these sub humans.
We just need a Hitler to lead us to help with out final solution...
Stan?
Shamarya I hope you understand that this is a sad and very sarcastic comment and that you don't filter it.
I know you feel you are saving the planet by exposing Jewish crimes and cover-ups. But I would like to know how you feel about your audience and how you have them so pumped up about anything anti-orthodox that any story you post turns into a discussion as to how to "blame the jews"
How about you post some nice stories to give people a more accurate view of the orthodox community?
I liked the fact that when you were doing that piece for Heeb you added "The Antidote", it revealed another side to you.
There are so many positive posts you can do - if only to help your audience gain some perspective and not have this be such a depressive site.
Here is something I saw today - its about an organization called "Kids Of Courage" - they give children with serious illnesses a chance to enjoy themselves:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u45Z0pOgTi8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfrg7Seblo4
These sorts of stories are not hard to find - I just wonder if your audience would find fault with this organization too

My research of this town indicates that there is frequent fires due to sub-standard construction. New Square loses 3-4 residents a year from fires. Further hazards stem from only one main access road- Washington Avenue- and the failure of some residents to yield to emergency vehicles.
This information comes from Wikipedia. I suspect it is true.
Since the political force of the chasids in this town is huge I would not be surprised that any attempt by law-enforcement authorities to issue citation would be met with all sorts of opposition (cries of anti-semitism, etc, etc,).
They have the town they want. They have the town they have created.

This tragic death is just that a tragedy. Regrettably too many frummies here in Baltimore have no regard for traffic signals, laws, etc. I have had many a near miss with TI car pool mothers who drive frantically. I am not saying that poor driving skills were the cause of this accident but it merits taking a look at our level of caution at the wheel.

@Jewish Prince; to me,I allege the New Square Rebbe is a more dangerous ,murderous, stealing, con-man, who allegedly directed well over 100 arsons throughout unincorporated Ramapo. He allegedly promotes social service fraud beyond anything happening in this country and allegedly controls not only his sheeple, the Taliban-like Cult group he heads, he allegedly controls virtually every politician at village, town, county, state, and federal levels. A wonderful gentleman who is allegedly part of a conspiracy to commit a variety of federal crimes and will be prosecuted under The Rico Act just like John Gotti. He'll be going on a vacation and won't be returning if all these allegations prove accurate after a thorough investigation by The FBI.
