Hasid Convicted Of Rape Released From Prison Today
David Silverman was part of a porn ring that lured underage girls, got them very drunk and then raped them, filming it all.
David Silverman, rapist, left; David Silverman in court on rape charges, hasidic again.

He wasn't hasidic when he committed the crimes, and he expressed remorse and said he has now found religion, so I really don't understand why his being hasidic now is relevant.

Abcdef, his being Hasidic now is what makes the entire story fascinating to begin with. He is in some ways like a 'born again', and his new status disallows him to look at evidence of prior acts. I don't see how his being Hasidic now is NOT relevant.

Is it true that the girls 14,15 presented themselves as being of age? (18 years old) Or is this just what he claims.

It's easier to find a black man with blue eyes than a Hasid with those abs.

suppose he showed remorse and said he found religion but he chose to be muslim . would you be singing the same song? Hasidic has everything to do with it. He is using it as a mask .

I don't know the details of this case, but with all sexual crimes there is a power dynamic. The greater the inequality the greater the culpability of the perpetrator. Let's try and rate certain situations on a scale of 1 to 100.
A father repeatedly sexually abuses his 4 y.o. daughter. The child weighs 30 kgs, he weighs 80 kgs. She knows that apart from the pain she could be killed in a split second. Power inequality rating 99/100.
A seventeen year old boy picks up a fifteen year old girl at a club, gives her ecstacy and has sex with her. PIR = 10/100.
The reader can try and work out where the David Silverman case lies between these two examples on a power dynamic scale.
The three cases are all crimes, but they are of a different nature completely and should be treated as such.
Again it would be good if G-d himself drifted down to earth and demanded a truth audit be done for every person alive. Everyone to make a list of all the good things and all the bad things they have done. Like the Norwegian tax records being made public to everyone. Then everyone could cast their eye over the mess and make some judgments. (Or is that what someone is actually doing right now with G-d's private help ? Redemptive justice or pure courtroom justice ? Interesting jurisprudence, nu ?)
Cases that actually end up at court are just the tip of the sexual crime iceberg.
Who's scared of the truth ?
P.S. I’m sorry if these comments are provocative but things need to be put into perspective. It was prophesied that a time would arise when discernment would escape many. The cube is solvable however.
P.S.S. The "religiousness" of David Silverman is irrelevant. Many people who pray at shul, wear black, wear tfillin and keep kosher pefectly have sexually abused their own children. The external appearance of someone largely bears no relation to their merit score. In fact some people rush to join a group so as to adopt a uniform as protection. Safety in groupthink idea. I never judge a book by its cover. Also the 613 mitzvot that Maimonides codified have all attracted various amounts of attention. There are whole tomes on the correct length of tzitzit, what prayers must be said etc. Whole forests of paper have gone to supply these august studies. The literature on the negative commandment of child sexual abuse and its consequences for the very fabric of the universe would fit on a cigarette paper. I am not really interested in the external when assessing someone. The mitzvot and a rabbinically directed lifestyle will help some people with a poor locus of self control follow a certain track, but Abraham was righteous long before the mitzvot were written down. I am not for one minute undermining the importance of the mitzvot as tools for humankind. Pentateuch in ancient Greek means “Five Tools”.

What's most terrifying to me is the fact that he was "organized" about his efforts to rape. And also that there may be people out there who are willing to risk their reputations and civil freedom (against the threat of incarceration) to seek out filmed sexual violence.

Don't know if it's true, but it's an almost ritualized defense when someone is accused of statutory rape. In any case, it doesn't matter. There are mountains of precedent saying you're responsible if you have sex with someone underage. "But your Honor, she said she was eighteen" doesn't cut it. Look up the Traci Lords case.

Traci Lords - now that's a name from the past...er...I mean who's Traci Lords?

I know of a situation not totally unlike this, someone convicted, time-served for filming women in a dorm who were naked (hard to believe a first offense was the basis...must have found more on his camera/computer), became a BT and now married with kids and does kiruv. The material about his behavior pre-Torah is publicly avaiable to anyone who searches his name several times online - he can't hide. but what amazes me is that BTs can be so bulletproof and the communities so Pollyanna about things that ANY psychologists/mental health professional would counsel caution. Explanation?...psychology, shmycology - s/he's a BT, the slate has been wiped clean by GOD Himself; who are you to do anything except take every opportunity to help this person integrate further?....

on Itchiemayer's note :
Also, I think it's important to remember that the case here isn't just having "sex" with girls under the age of consent - it's about RAPING and creating porn out of raping girls - i.e. children. Assuming the rapists believed the girls were actually of the age of consent doesn't really mean that much, considering the rapists were not interested in consensual sex to begin with, but were rather interested in rape.
I don't really see them thinking - "hmm, I'd like to rape this person, but I'm not sure if they can consent to sex. Not that it matters, because I'm going to rape them, but I'd never want to rape someone who was under the age of consent to have non-rape sex!"
The age of consent is not relevant in terms of whether or not rape happend - and I think it's important to separate those two words : rape and sex. They may have physical similarities but they are not the same.
The question here is whether the rapists were trying to rape women and girls regardless of age and ability to consent, or whether they deliberately sought out children to rape as an added element of destruction.

Silverman is a cautionary, tragic tale. Born to a dysfunctional Satmar family in Kiryas Joel, he was molested as a child in cheder. Like many other children with a similar background, Silberman drifted away from religious life and became involved with a bad crowd in nearby Monsey, NY. Not saying it excuses his behavior but it does give it some context.
