NYPD's Police Commissioner just finished making a statement and answering questions in a news conference. He said Shomrim was very helpful in the investigation but the large numbers of search teams, posters, etc., scared Aron and that's why he killed Kletzky. Here's the audio…

NYPD Police Commissioner Press Conference Leibby Kletzky 7-13-11
Highlights:
• Shomrim got the license plate number and reported it to police, which helped in apprehending Aron.
• Police think Leibby was lost and Aron said he would drive him home.
• Aron panicked when he saw all the posters and the search teams and that's why he killed Leibby.
• Aron lived in Tennessee for two years where he worked as a security guard, and police do not know if he has a police record there.
• One of the journalists (sounded Jewish with a Yiddish accent) said people had called 911 on Aron in the past but police did not properly handle those complaints.
• Police maintain that he has no record of pedophilia in New York.
• There was approximately a 2 hour delay from the time parents called Shomrim until Shomrim called police.
• The police commissioner said Aron is Orthodox.
• An autopsy is being performed.
Update 2:45 am CDT Thursday, July 14 – Here's a video of the press conference:

There's gonna be so much recrimination here but none of it is going to bring Leiby back.
It is so sad.
The important thing for Shmarya is that the guy is 'orthodox' and he will be in 7th heaven if someone can prove a link to Chabad. Nothing else really concerns him.

what is the motive? you dont kill someone like that because of posters? kidnapping is a lesser charge than murder? so why did he butcher the poor boy?

this levi monster should be skinned alive very very slowly he should for an eternity for what he did.

Now comes the time for everyone but the grieving parents to point fingers. No one is thinking how to avoid another tragedy such as this or how to best console the family. Even on this forum the vitriole has been unleashed to what purpose?

• Aron panicked when he saw all the posters and the search teams and that's why he killed Leibby.
As opposed to murdering the boy and dismembering him later? Like he was ever going to let him go?

Most of the times, missing kids are found. It is still too early to know what exactly the facts in this case were, with the spin of Dov Hikind and the NYPD. The autopsy should yield more information than the confession the cops sweated out of the suspect. But one can't help but feel incredibly sad when THIS is the time a monster causes harm to a child.
Ya know, I can't even remember when my parents first told me not to get in a car with a stranger. I heard the same message at school. Times don't change much. Now is the time to console the family. I am reminded of the time when some elderly delivery truck driver killed 7 people with his truck in Herald Square, NYC and injured something like 8 more in an accident. But tradegies like the murder in Brooklyn are harder to take.

My condolences to the family.
The way I read this article the
parents did not call 911/police
first.
If so this needs to stop..
The police are the first ones to
call!!!!!

Somehow, I cannot believe that a man who cuts off the feet of his victim and stuff them in his freezer is a first-time killer.

This can't not be emphasized enough. You call the police first - not the rabbi, not Shomrim, etc.

this is a lie. look at the video. it was not happenstance. the polies are covering up something. to protect themselves? at the behest of community leaders who do not want any word of molestation to get out?
this is disgusting.

• The police commissioner said Aron is Orthodox.
Not True! Kelly was very careful in saying he had the trappings of an orthodox Jew.

He most certainly did.
Try listening to whole tape carefully.

I'm sure Shomrim get lots of calls from upset panicky parents whose kids are late getting home after school.
Shomrim drive around the neighborhood, ask at the school, etc. and find out the kid went to a friend's house or stopped for a snack. None of those calls need the police.
At least for now, it seems reasonable to think that Shomrim got such a call, did all the usual things they do to find such a child, and then they called the police when they realized it was beyond their scope. I don't feel anyone should be pointing fingers at Shomrim for a 'delay' in calling police.

Great work shomrim in helping the NYPD and Commissioner Kelly had no problem acknowledging.

WoolSilkCotton:
For once i am in full agrrement with your entire comment.
Shomrim is like a personal service to the community for many silly things as well. And they act on anything immediately.Their response is as fast as Hatzolah.
They have experience and some training and the minute they see that they cant handle a call they call police. The police are busy enough and cant respond when a child is missing for two hours.

Then the police commissioner is wrong – and so are the parents and anyone else who stopped it.
Posted by: Shmarya | July 13, 2011 at 01:18 PM
Of course they are going to do an autopsy. They need it to prosecuted this murderer to the fullest. It's always the same clowns who want to give every murderer/rapist/molester a pass.
Posted by: effie | July 13, 2011 at 01:48 PM
Deremes, I am not your enemy.
I am aware of the realities that Shomrim and Hatzoloh have to deal with on a daily basis. They work in the toughest cities and the toughest neighborhoods in the USA.
As I have mentioned in the past, I have been a member of a volunteer ambulance squad for 19 years, and many of the calls we get are 'courtesy' or 'community service' type stuff, or things that aren't true emergencies, but still we have to take each call seriously and treat the people with respect.
Although I have been critical of Shomrim and Hatzoloh because of incidents of 'cowboy' behavior by a few individual members who get a little too carried away with themselves and the flashing red lights and the walkie-talkies, I salute the organizations and members and what they are trying to do with the difficulties they face each day.
Posted by: WoolSilkCotton | July 13, 2011 at 02:17 PM
I listen to the whole think and ray kelly says that all "appropriate measure and authorities were followed up by the medical examiner". Don't they have ways of doing autopsy's without destroying the body.

WoolSilkCotton: I totally agree with you here. What I wonder about is why Shomrim took the license plate number in the first place. Where they driving by and saw suspicious behavior? If so, they should have reported this immediately. It doesn't take long for a cop to run plates and come up with an address.
Posted by: Morris the Katz | July 13, 2011 at 02:37 PM
Morris the Katz,
Not sure but i think that Shomrim got a description of the vehicle from the police when they saw it on the security video and from there shomrim went looking for a gold sedan.
Posted by: Deremes | July 13, 2011 at 02:51 PM
Morris, good questions. I get the impression that in neighborhoods like BP, the Shomrim know everybody and what everybody is having for breakfast.
A different car in the neighborhood may be enough to cause them to write down a plate number. I guess we will find out more details in coming days.
From the looks of a photo on VIN, taken inside the Shomrim Command Center van, they have a pretty sophisticated communications/electronics setup. It wouldn't surprise me if they had access and could run ID's on plates.
Posted by: WoolSilkCotton | July 13, 2011 at 03:21 PM
The police told them what type and color of car.
Shortly after that, Shomrim saw a car that matched the description being driven suspiciously, I think, and they took down the license plate number and called the cops.

the spin of Dov Hikind
... Is all we have right now, and all we're gonna get for a long time. Viva Hikind! - Not ...
Posted by: Maskil | July 13, 2011 at 05:22 PM
The police will not do anything until 24 hours after the child has been missing, unless someone witnesses an a kidnapping. Most times the child turns up, which is why they have this law. Contacting Shomrim was the right thing to do, even if they are not the law.
