Summer camp shut down for “deplorable” conditions
MidHudson NewsTHOMPSON – Citing “deplorable” conditions, Town of Thompson officials Monday shut down Camp Bias Esther on Route 17B and Coopers Corners Road.
The camp was to open soon and house some 400 children for the two summer months, but Town Supervisor Anthony Cellini and the town building inspector looked at the site and decided to shut it down until repairs are made.
Cellini fear for the safety of the children at the camp if they were allowed to stay there in its current condition.
“There were sewers running, electrical lines running through trees; they’ve got inside wiring running outside. They’ve got the chimney exhaust pipes from their heating units leaning up against their buildings,” he said.Cellini said they won’t allow the camp to open until the repairs are made.
And he said town officials will be examining other summer camps with an eye toward forcing them to bring their facilities up to safety standards.
[Hat Tip: Seymour.]
The summer camp phenomenon is an interesting part of the American landscape. We don't have anything like it in Australia. Each to his own.

JESUS CHRIST, what kind of camp is named Bias Esther??? Do you mean Bnos Esther?
I think Camp Daughters of Esther makes more sense than Camp Sex with Esther.

i guess these town of thompson employees werent made aware that rules, laws, and certainly safety standards do not apply to the ultra-orthodox.

what is very disturbing is that it seems that town of Thompson cares more about kids safety then this camp operator.
yet to the frummies the camp operator is holy and needs to be protected by not publishing their names or the names of the camp. And think that employees are evil.
Of course by not publishing the names they are just putting innocent children in danger since these guys will just open in another place and name and put children in danger.
I think even the rebbies way back when never ever intended the loshon hora rules should apply in these typo of cases.
what is really sick if this guy would have served cholov stam or no glatt meat their names would be plastered all over the place.
They care more about that then their children safety

You must publish the name of this camp as an incentive to others to folow the safety laws.Do NOT sweep this under the rug.

seymour -
i bet most of the parents are completely ignorant as to the dangers of faulty wiring, improper exhausting etc. and are sure in any case that hashem will protect the children. its a good thing the local authorities dont have the luxury of relying on god and have to enforce the codes of mere humans.

Perhaps summer facility of Bais Esther School in BP. - Sanz Klausenbug?
I've worked in several camps, and it was always known that the health inspectors could close the place down in a flash. Good for Thompson, NY, that they sent their bldg inspector out before the kids came in.

I once spoke to a bloke from Western Samoa named Woofa Malufa.
Sorry to descend to schoolboy humour. It's ok to have a laugh once in a while.

When building inspectors close these shitholes down, they are called antisemites.

I wish everybody whos so willingly bash
anyone that somebody writes negative about them would know the facts before opening there mouth.
First anybody who has dealings with the state or goverment knows how complicated and sometimes weird building codes can be
just like the tax laws, financial laws, fda,Etc,
Ask anybody that has section 8 they will tell you that you could have a broken shattered house and pass inspection but if one flame in the gas wont open without a match then you fail. I could go on and on with examples how crazy and mind boggling these zoning laws can be . So just because you read an article does not mean you have to jump to conclusions that this is a place were it is dangerous for children to be.

dont talk before you know -
what i already know from the few facts given, this camp may be safe enough for YOUR children , but NOT for mine.
Posted by: ah-pee-chorus | June 27, 2011 at 09:09 PM
Talk before you know: Nothing is more simple than building and life safety codes.
All it takes is spending some money, and not that much unless the place is a total hell hole.
Safe electrical installations, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, proper exhaust of products of combustion. Missing these things KILLS children. WTF is wrong with these A-holes?

The camp is probably a lot safer than any of their filthy homes.
Posted by: devorah | June 27, 2011 at 09:59 PM
Devorah most jewish homes are very nice and decent and if your a self hating jew try to come up with something better
Posted by: dont talk before you know | June 27, 2011 at 10:09 PM
Dead hasidic ,If you would know the place maybe you wouldnt talk that way . I happen to know that place my child was there for 2 summers and there is smoke detectors and exit signs and everything else neccessary for safety. I wouldnt say its the most beautiful place around but it is certainly not a danger to be there.
PS. Using dirty language does not prove you right it only shows how prejudice you are against orthodox jews.
Please join the klu klux klan to vent your hatred.

You are right, I do not know, I was not there, but suffice to say that the inspector feels that the camp is not save for habitation. In addition, I would rely on his opinion before I will look to you for advice. The truth is that because you have a problem getting section 8, I could surmise that you have a problem filling out paperwork and following simple instruction, which most in the Chasidic community doesn’t have a problem with, based on the sheer numbers who have section 8. Why don’t you just take your own advice, “don’t talk before you know”

I managed building in nY to close a place down there must have been serious violation
I guess this is not a problem
There were sewers running, electrical lines running through trees; they’ve got inside wiring running outside. They’ve got the chimney exhaust pipes from their heating units leaning up against their buildings,” he said.
also why don't you send you kids to the old homowack
another death trap that the state closed down

I'm glad they care about the safety of our kids. And by "they" I mean the Town of Thompson.

When I heard the news today I couldn’t believe it, this is a nice camp that is running very good, and all buildings are in a very good condition, and it’s for sure not life threatening to the children.
It might be that some pressure from Bobov 48 brought to it. (Which is not the first time they use the officials as a wepon to close down a building from the other Bobov).
And closing down a camp isn’t such a big news, but this one for a very simple reson get to ALL news websites, and it’s no doubt who is behind it.

As a boy, I went to an all-Jewish (not Hasidic) summer camp called Camp Chodikee, located in Ulster County, NY. From my standpoint, it was a perfectly fine camp. We played baseball and fast pitch softball morning, afternoon, and night, which was fine with me, especially since due to the topography of the ball field, it was easy for a lefthanded hitter such as myself to hit a homer down the right field line.
When we weren't playing baseball, we played basketball, and the camp owner was one of the all-time college greats from Brooklyn College, even though he was maybe 5'8".
One little problem: Our bunk had a broken sewer pipe, which I showed my dad on visiting day. He hauled me outta there as quickly as I could pack my duffel bag.
That camp was closed shortly thereafter, and now is a Hasidic camp, where I guess basic plumbing violations are winked at by the local authorities.

In which world are you living in, every time you guys screw up, it is Bobov fault, it is about time to admit to the world that you are a bunch of loosers and can't run anything proper.

I hope one day they all become Jews.

Can you give me an examaple (preferably a link to a news story) where either of these events have happened? What were the names and locations of building inspectors who were called antisemites? Or is this just supposed to be self-evident?

Finally something is being done about this dump of a camp! I can't believe that those poor children are forced to spend their summers in that dump! We live on Coopers Corners Rd and have to pass the camp every day on the way to the bus station in the mornings and evenings. The stench of putrefying raw sewage which emanates from that camp at dawn and dusk is enough to make one gag and want to vomit every time! For a couple of years now we've been complaining to the town about the stench and the response we always received was that they had some sort of open air evaporation leaching field sewage system and that is why it smelled! I don't give a darn what the reason is - the smell could not possibly have been a healthy thing for those kids to be exposed to! Well, I don't know what exactly made the town finally take action, but I sure am very happy about it!

I did, the incident from 2009. But you will have to point out specifically where building inspectors (or anyone, for that matter) were accused of being motivated by antisemitism. I did not find any example of this accusation in my brief search. Would you be so kind as to direct me to that.

Antisemitism???!!!!???? Don't be ridiculous! We have two camps on Coopers Corners. The one on the corner which is now closed and one down the street from us a couple of hundred feet. We happen to like our Hasidic summer residents. They are polite. They are friendly, contrary to popular belief around here. many times while working in the garden in front of the house the people walking by on their daily walks have commented on the garden and once even a mother and her adorable teeny children (all 9 of them) stopped to admire the flowers. I said hello and we started talking. We ended up on our island in our enormous pond on our property where I gave the kids dry dog food with which to feed the fish. They were thrilled and OH SO POLITE!! There is no hatred or bigotry here, other than towards the cretins who allowed the corner camp to be in such horrific conditions and then allowed children to live their! Those people need to be tarred and feathered and run out of town!
