Police in Jerusalem arrested an ultra-Orthodox man in his 30s today for sexually assaulting a homeless 12-year-old girl.

 

Police in Jerusalem arrested an ultra-Orthodox man in his 30s today for sexually assaulting a homeless 12-year-old girl.

The Jerusalem Post reports that the indictment of the man says he met the girl on the street and lured her to a health clinic. Once inside, he took her to the bathroom, sexually assaulted her, gave the girl two shekels and left her on the street.

The girl told a social worker at a homeless shelter where she stays about the attack, and the social worker reported it to police.

The man's remand was extended for three days by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court this afternoon.

The Law of Moses has very clear and very humane rules on how to deal with these kinds of people and crimes.

Well, if you and some other people here would try to use your head for something other than eating, you would realize that what I said is very appropriate.

Just to be sure that you understand consider what you would want to happen:

1) Perp. goes to prison (or even executed, as some suggested here). Girl is still homeless, but now she'd been violated which will complicate any of her relatioships later.

2) Perp. gives the girl's father 50 Shekels (the silver ones, not NIS) and forced by court to marry the girl w/o possibility of divorce. So now the girl is not homeless anymore, married, and may even have a resemblance of a normal life.

SO? What such great humanist as yourself would choose for this poor girl ?

imagine a society where the "punishment" for raping an underage girl is that the rapist has to marry her. so now the rapist will be free to have her whenever he likes. can you imagine how many sick men would choose this course if there were no deterrent? such a law would lead to many more child victims as well as much disdain for the laws which cuased this.
there is a much better option. the rapist goes to jail for life, since he has scarred the victim for life. the victim then sues the rapist civilly, and whatever money he had goes to her, with which she can hopefully get the help she needs in order to have a happy and productive life.

The goal here is to produce such punishment that would be:

1) worth the crime.
2) will take care of the victim.

I think I have expressed my opinion on this matter the best I could. Perhaps I'm not good at explaining things. But I can assure you that I'm willing to put my reputation on the line and vouch for this particular part of the Law of Moses.

I do not follow the Law of Moses blindly - I understand it. If you don't - perhaps it is not for you. But it does not mean that what is written there is not true or outdated.
