Hasidic Paper Blames "Rotten Heretic Lowlife" For "Global Storm" Over Censored Picture
The Brooklyn-based hasidic-run Yiddish language newspaper Di Tzitung electronically manipulated the iconic photo of the White House situation room during the Bin Laden attack to remove Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and another woman from the image. Di Tzitung 'apologized' for its bad judgement after my post on the photo manipulation went viral. Here is what the new issue of Di Tzitung says about me.
According to a Brooklyn-based Yiddish-speaking source, this is the translation of Di Tzitung's headline and subhead for the lead story in this week's edition dated Friday May 13th but published today:
Global storm over modified White House photo
Unbelievable incitement when “a fardorbener yung” [“a rotten heretic lowlife”] publishes the photo that omitted Secretary of State Clinton
It doesn't seem that Di Tzitung's editor and publisher has taken his own apology to heart.
Here's a closeup of the headline and subhead:
Update 10:54 pm CST – My original translation of "stinking heretic lowlife" has been amended to read "rotten hereitc lowlife," which Yiddish-speaking readers say more accurately represents the meaning of the hasidic slur "a fardobener yung."
omg! please forward this the the media! Der Tzeuitung didn't learn from their errors!!!!this will be too funny when the media strikes at them again!

I think the right translation for *Fardorbener Yung* is *Rotten (Spoiled) youngster*
Posted by: Boro Parker | May 11, 2011 at 09:53 AM
Listen Shmarya, at least they consider you young.
I would reference the old yiddish proverb:

Posted by: Boro Parker | May 11, 2011 at 09:53 AM
My source says that in hasidic slang, calling an adult "yung" is pejorative and derogatory, and carries meaning far greater than age.
"Fardorbener," means "rotten," "heretic," and "lowlife" and is extremely derogatory.
Therefore I think "stinking heretic lowlife" would seem to capture the correct meaning of the phrase.

fardurben in williamsburg doesnt necessarily mean a lowlife, it means corrupted. They use it for people who went off the derech.
for example, my friend rachel got a tattoo, she is considered fardurben.
i dont know what yung means.

According to my German dictionary, verdorben can mean depraved, corrupt, perverted or debauched and may have a stronger meaning then just 'spoiled child'.

I would also dispute the translation of Fardorbener Yung.
I thought fardorbener meant 'simple-minded' or 'small-town hick', or 'slightly retarded'.
I will spare the readers any details of how my parents would apply this phrase.
'Stinking heretic lowlife' is much too strong a translation.
So Shmarya, you're not a heretic, just a small-town boy. At least they refer to you as youthful!
And why the green banner? Is today the frumma St. Patrick's Day?

You are correct it is a pejorative meaning that rotten but used to be edible, and it refers to someone who is OTD and yung is person.
Posted by: OMG | May 11, 2011 at 10:14 AM
Your translation is misleading.
"stinking heretic lowlife" in Yiddish would be:
פארשטינקענע כופר'ישע ליידיגייער
A more correct translation is:
Rotten youngster (or Rebellious fellow)

The only reason people are picking on this newspaper is because it is frum. If a secular newspaper eliminated Clinton from an iconic picture because they felt it was immodest, no one would care.
Posted by: DK | May 11, 2011 at 10:20 AM
Saying I am sorry and accepting responsibility is not taught in Chassidic schools.
The idea is to blame another and pretend you are innocent.
While I agree with you on the issue of Mrs. Clinton, all these so called newspapes print violent Anti Israel diatribes on a weekly basis.
And since few can read Yiddish they get away with it and then fund raise in moderate nad modern orthodox communities.
For a month you Shmaryahu should monitor the Satamr papes and publish in Englsih what they write on Israel.
Posted by: schneur | May 11, 2011 at 10:20 AM
So learn Yiddish and then you'll be able to read it (and respond) too. I know from personal experience that it absolutely freaks them out when someone who is not "one of them" speaks Yiddish (especially if you speak Yiddish to one of their kids).

The important thing, Shmarya, is that you got under their skin. Kudos!

Posted by: Racheli | May 11, 2011 at 10:36 AM
I agree 100% with the paper. It's one thing to discuss this within the community, but once the goyish media picked it up, YOU were responsible for the grave chillul Hashem.
Posted by: ZZB | May 11, 2011 at 10:36 AM
If the newspaper feels justified to have altered the photo for tznius reasons, and is not ashamed of having done so in the name of their religious beliefs, then why are the frumma up in arms about a chillul hashem?
Aren't the frumma proud of their tznius policy?
Aren't they capable of explaining it to the media in such a way that a reasonable normal American can understand?
The reason the frumma think it's a chillul hashem is because they realize they were exposed as being backward idiots. They are the truly fadorben.
If what they did was praiseworthy and promoting tznius, why aren't they proud of the publicity for their efforts at tznius?
Isn't a chillul hashem when you're exposed doing something that makes you- and Jews in general- look bad?

Seymour & Tikvah,
Let's assume for a moment that the frumma are entitled to creating standards for themselves.
Let's assume that that standard was a sensitivity that was only understood and appreciated by them.
They then applied that self imposed standard.
Along comes an outsider who doesnt appreciate their standards and he holds it up to the world for all to ridicule.
Who is at fault? The frumma who created and implemented a private standard for themselves, or the shmuck who willfully and gleefully held it up for all to ridicule?
Posted by: corn popper | May 11, 2011 at 11:11 AM

it was there error by not saying right under the pic that is was edited that caused to uproar.

I'd say "fardorbener" in my experience means more "vicious" than "lowlife". "Yung" doesn't literally mean "young". Its connotation is "ignorant" or "fool". A Rav would be an "alter" even if he were not old.

Even by your logic, the "transgression" was minor at best.
But FM gleefully held it up for all the world to ridicule. And make no mistake about it, that was the intention then as this story is now TO HURT THE FRUMMA COMMUNITY.

it could only work because they did something stupid.
PS I get just as worked up when Glem Beck and ox news do the same thing.
In addition, they are making themselves look even worse saying this.
Just say we goofed big time we should have done it differently. when that happens the story goes away. (look at the different attitude of baseball fan between the guy who admitted and those who still deny steroids use)
By writing this they are extending the story and keeping in the news much longer than is really necessary

When someone goes of the derech and leaves the orthodox way of life or if he/she is still in the community but with very heretic views ,in Hebrew they call it "Nech-motz" from the word Chometz. In Yiddish we call it "Fardorben".
It goes like this:
You know this guy? yeah sure,he is a fardurbener young or he is rott fardurben.
On food like milk, cheese or anything else when it it tastes rotten, its called ''Farshtinken" or 'Fardorben"
Now,you don't deny that you are an ex Orthodox guy and you proud of it. So they just called you with you are proud of.
Posted by: Deremes | May 11, 2011 at 11:34 AM
One commentator on the Foxnews website, in response to another commentator who claimed that the statement by Der Tzeitung was bigoted or something, summed it up well:
Well, you see it incorrectly, and through bigoted eyes. Their statement is polite, diplomatic, and accurate. And, yes, the only people who did anything wrong were those who “called them on their actions”. Think of it. You never heard of this newspaper before, much less read it. Why are you making an issue of it? In fact, the only reason you even know about it is because of an anti-Semitic former Jew who has a website that specializes in distorting and disparaging the actions and words of religious Jews.

true but it was on a different page. Friedman should have been more forceful on TV and stated that.

“Indeed, it has created a large-scale Chillul Hashem.” Says who? Just because the gentiles object to something we do, does not make it a Chillul Hashem.
Maybe it was a Kiddush Hashem how the world sees how we are so careful in guarding our eyes.
The only real and obvious Chillul Hashem is how a group of self-hating Jews like Shmarye Shym Rshoim Yirkuv (who have a known appetite for turning in Orthodox Jews) gave over this picture to the news media to incite them against us.

"Fardorben" literally means "rotten" and would be used, for example, with respect to spoiled meat; (rotten vegetables are farfoylt - meat is fardorben), but it is used with respect to people to signify that they are morally degenerate. As someone pointed out above "yung" is a pejorative term that means something akin to 'scoundrel'.

this is NOT a chillul hashem. a chillul would be if someone identifiable as a jew did something against the torah which shed a negative light on jews, judaism or the torah. but if a jew does something in accordance with halacha, that cant be a chillul hashem and neither can reporting on it be a chillul.
so if the editors of the paper maintain that their religion requires them not to print pictures of women, then there can be no issue of chillul hashem here. instead, there is something else at play. the rest of the modern world thinks any ideology that requires its followers not to have pictures of women is misogynistic and backwards. thats not a chillul hashem. it is simply people finding the haredi lifestyle idiotic. and this judgement is not being crafted based on false info or the acts of an impious hassid. it is based on the accurate depiction of torah values as interpreted by haredim like the editors of this paper.
so stop looking to blame others when you claim there is no problem to begin with. normal people are going to make judgements based on your actions and if you are embarrassed by this, consider changing your outlook.

In fact, the only reason you even know about it is because of an anti-Semitic former Jew who has a website that specializes in distorting and disparaging the actions and words of religious Jews.
Posted by: corn popper | May 11, 2011 at 11:35 AM
As far as I can tell, Shmarya is not distorting anything. He is REPORTING. It is an enormous difference. Just because it's a shanda for the goyim doesn't mean it's not true and just because the truth hurts, doesn't mean it's not important.
The community needs to be accountable, and not just to the rabbonim. They are the ones that allowed little children to be molested and they cannot be trusted to do anything to protect children or truth. They should be, but they cannot. So they created the need for Failed Messiah, Shmarya and the rest of us who will speak ha EMET.

Deremes, MW, cornpopper, fyge, ZZB - the only chillul HaShem in evidence here is your continued existence. You and your entire culture are trash.
Posted by: Jeff | May 11, 2011 at 12:00 PM
An open minded statement if I ever heard one.

Deremes, MW, cornpopper, fyge, ZZB:
Watch the Stephen Colbert video. Listen to the audience laughing. They are laughing at YOU.
If you are proud of what your fellow frumma did, then so be it; tune out the laughter, ignore the thousands and thousands of comments on all the news websites that ridicule what you are so proud of.
No need to get upset at anyone else here. If you're happy with your tznius policy, and your photoshop policy, so be it, and live with the scorn and mockery when the general public learns of your ways.
Posted by: WoolSilkCotton | May 11, 2011 at 12:12 PM
Yes! I'll continue to hold my head up high proud of my heritage as I walk down the street with a yarmulkah perched on my head, and my tzitzis swinging at my sides.
At least I stand for SOMETHING, unlike you and your ilk who fritter away your miserable worthless hateful lives.

Not complaining; merely pointing out the hypocrisy. But I should be used to that by now.
Posted by: corn popper | May 11, 2011 at 12:28 PM
WoolSilkCotton,
Jews have to behave respectfully and not make a chillul h.
When a Jew gets caught stealing, its a Chilul h.etc etc
When a Jew has a beard and payos,its not a chilul h.
According to you guys it is because you are ashamed to show Jewishness.
When a Jew wont shake a woman's hand in business etc,its not a chilus h.
According to you guys it is because you are ashamed to show Jewishness.
I deal with women and they fully respect it. They can make fund of it but still respect it.
Same goes here. The audience is laughing, big deal. Everyone is in for a good laugh.
So far i see it is you guys here who are upset and cursing using foul language on the frumma or on posters who get back at you hard and you cant handle it.
The frumma velt in general are happy people. It is you guys for the most part who are unhappy
Posted by: Deremes | May 11, 2011 at 12:28 PM
@WoolSilkCotton-- They are laughing at me ? Good!! That means that i am on the right track! Its nothing new here, this were your predecessors the Maskilim's worry too: not to be laughed at by the goyim.
Posted by: fyge | May 11, 2011 at 12:31 PM
There we go again.
Schvatrza means a black person or to self hating Jews its a demeaning term.
Same goes with "Yung". When you want say something good about someones you say:He is a giter yung. Meaning he is a good person that does favors.

you are full of shit
I spoke yiddish before I spoke English (goyisy)
It is used derogatory 99% of the time
Posted by: seymour | May 11, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Deremes,
You are 100% correct. The failed blow hards in this audience aren't used to an observant Jew who can actually respond to their hateful, vicious comments. Since there was no real logic to begin with, when challenged, they must resort to the only weapon available to them: profanity and name calling.
Posted by: corn popper | May 11, 2011 at 12:36 PM
seymour,
You don't hate frum Jews. You hate the idea of a Jewish religion. Atleast WSC doesn't hate the Jewish religion because he is religious himself but for some reason he is hateful to frum Jews only.
They would love your stuff on the racists blogs
Posted by: Deremes | May 11, 2011 at 12:36 PM
FM and others like are not against religion (even thought we belive it is not based of god) or frummies.
When is the last time we criticized MO Jews or rebbies. rarely since they do not do idiotic things like the ultra Orthodox.
and what we say about the ultra Orthodox in criticism is mild to compared what they say about the secular.
at least we do not blame the holocaust on them, the way they teach there kids that the holocaust was because of the Zionist and secular.
They cannot go on and vilify us and expect that they get a free pass

I hate people who distorts it.
Get over it what you say is the Jewish religion is a distortion.
To bad if you cohorts do thing that are so stupid day in day out that make Jews look like morons and crooks and protecting crooks and worse
Posted by: seymour | May 11, 2011 at 12:42 PM
I stand corrected: "yung" is not always used pejoratively, although when used with adjectives such as "fardorben(er)" it most certainly is.
Alot of the people posting here would merit the appellation "Grober yung".
"Shvartse" is NOT pejorative although it too can be used that way, just like "Jew" can be pejorative in English.
Posted by: Gevezener Chusid | May 11, 2011 at 12:43 PM
I really think if we all met in person, this conversation would be much more enjoyable and pleasant.
Unfortunately, I cannot trust the frumma here. Violence against those who disagree with them is allowed in their 'torah'.

does that mean that when 'they' find things that you do which sre praiseworthy and laudable that you know you are on the wrong track?
this would have been a more honest comment: you know you are right no matter what, cause someone told you theres a god and he wrote a book specifically for your nomadic wanderers of the bronze age, and the only ones who REALLY know what he meant are your rebbeim....at least until your rebbeim themselves disagreed at which point you chose which of those rebbeim REALLY REALLY KNOWS.
Posted by: ah-pee-chorus | May 11, 2011 at 12:43 PM
seymour,
You are a big liar.
You hiding under attacking frum Jews.
But many times you cant resist your true feelings and you show your hate to the Torah,Talmud and the entire Jewish religion.
So stop with the non sense that you don't attack mo because they don't do idiotic things and the frumma do and that's why you attack the frumma.
You hate MO as much as the frumma.
You are one big lie.

"FM and others like are not against religion"
I believe that FM was founded with good intentions - to expose and thereby rectify transgressions in the observant community. Over time, it seems to have been co-opted by the supportive comments of heretics like Seymour, and has degenerated into pure hatred of observant Judaism.
