A New Square hasidic man suffered severe body bruns early this morning when he fought off another hasidic man armed with an incendiary device during a fight over a simmering religious controversy.

NEW SQUARE — A Truman Avenue man suffered severe body bruns early this morning when he fought off a village resident armed with a incendiary device during a fight over a simmering religious controversy, Ramapo police said.

Ramapo police said they later arrested 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer of Adams Lane on felony charges. He had serious burns to his hands and arms and has been hospitalized, police said.

The victim, 43, whose name is being withheld by the Journal-News, suffered burns to 50 percent of his body and remains hospitalized.

Police charged Spitzer with felony counts of first-degree attempted arson and first-degree assault, police said.

Other charges are possible, including attempted murder or possibly murder if the victim dies at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, police said.

Police said they are aware that the Truman Avenue family had been targeted before with violence and protests by religious zealots because the victim prayed outside the community's main synagogue used by the Skver Hasidic grand rabbi, the worldwide community's dynastic leader.

Police investigators said today that they have no evidence of any connection between today's attack at 4:12 a.m. and past incidents gainst the family and other dissidents in the community. The vacant upper floor of a Bush Lane house caught fire recently where another dissident family lived.

"I know there is a history there and we're aware of problems within the community," Ramapo Police Detective Lt. Mark Emma said today. "We have no evidence there is a connection. We're still investigating."

The Truman Avenue family installed surveillance cameras because of previous incidents at the house.

Just after 4 a.m. today, a young man living in the Truman Avenue house woke up his father after hearing people out on the porch, police said. Four people were in the house.

The family members began watching a security camera monitor when they saw a man later identified as Spitzer throw something onto their rear deck, Emma said.

Emma said the item turned out to be a rag soaked in flammable liquid.

The father and a son went outside, where the father confronted Spitzer, Emma said.

"Somehow — we're not sure yet — the victim's clothes caught on fire," Emma said. "He has severe burns to his face, arms, and chest."

The victim's son rolled his father on the ground to put out the flames, Emma said.

"The suspect fled the scene, but we were able to track him down" at 8:30 a.m., Emma said.

Rockland Paramedics Inc. and police found the victim sitting on the front steps of his house.

The suspect was taken to Nyack Hospital for the burns and later transferred to Cornell Medical Center in New York City, Emma said.

Ramapo police were later assisted by the Rockland Sheriff's Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation fie unit and the Rockland County Computer Crimes Unit.

The fight is over a group of dissidents who reject the leadership of the Squarer Rebbe. The dissidents pray at a nursing home, not at the central synagogue of the village, which is controlled by the rebbe.

Someone suspected something and called the police. If it were not for that person, the victim would have been buried and the murderer would have gotten away with it, because of, in part, Hatzoloh.

This is the type of insensitivity towards sexual abuse victims that manifests itself in many ways in the community. Yechiel's attitude, of "so, get over it already!", typifies the naivete and lack of any feelings some Jews have towards molestation victims. It comes from their need to disassociate themselves and/or the need to believe that "it's not so bad" so that they can rationalize their own shortcomings and apathy. Denial is their main source of reassurance and if they can make all these victims somehow shut up and just disappear, then they can feel all safe and secure in their own little Marvin Schick style Camelot that they think they are living in.

The popular refrain, made notoriously famous by Chaim "Tuvya" Neuhoff of "I am also against molestation", or as Yechiel puts it, "I am a staunch supporter of zero tolerance on child molestation" (BTW, Lipa Margulies said the same exact thing at the now infamous YTT parent gathering in 2006), is just another defense mechanism they use to convince themselves that they truly care. Wow, what a brave statement to say "I am against child molestation!" Who isn't besides the molesters themselves and NAMBLA? The enablers wish they would all disappear at once, both victims and molesters. This way they won't have to answer as to why they did nothing to protect the children.

So please, Jancsipsita, tell your story here and everywhere, again and again and again. Don't let anyone silence you or any abuse victim ever again. Survivors like yourself need to be heard and they need to be heard loud and clear. They need to be heard in Boro Park, Williamsburg, Flatbush, Lakewood and Baltimore. They need to be heard in Monsey, New Square, KJ, Monroe and New Hempstead. They need to be heard in the halls of 42 Broadway and in the halls of the Albany Statehouse. You have no one to fear anymore and it's time to declare your independence from the harassers and intimidators. In real life I am a very caring individual and anyone who knows me personally will vouch for me. There are certain elements that rub me the wrong way... we all have the need to vent sometimes.

However, I feel that since this site was not intended as a forum for abused persons, and since the likelyhood of getting emotional help here is slim, there is no point in constantly bringing up a past encounter at every possible opportunity. I choose not to approach the leaders since they are too deep in the rut to function as real leaders... This is where you may have erred.
I go about it by spreading the word to the locals and laypeople quietly in an attempt to get them to behave morally sound. I, like you distrust the system and practice religion as per my concept thereof. I, although by large, disagree with the leaders' priority lists and outlook, practice my religious beliefs happily and sincerely. I am who I chose to be; not controlled by others. This may be the key object you overlooked; there is more to our religion than its incapable/corrupt leaders.

yechiel- i understand you very well i deliberatly downplayed it this time in mentioning it thats why i was very surprised by youre answer anyway i am not mad at you, i just think that mentioning it sometimes it wont be forgotten not for myself particularly but in general how widespread this is for 45 years i never told anyone not even my father since it was a different world the 50 s and 60 s but since recently i do mention it whenever i can .
