Shmarya, you should've asked me permission before posting a picture of myself on Purim in EY, during my yeshiva days. That drunken bafoon on the ground is Common Sense, before his days of having common sense.

I don't want to end up like anyone in that picture.

This year was easy! No Chabad in New Zealand this Purim. They're all off in Melbourne schnorring or something. Pity, because I would have liked an hamantash and a schnapps.

Useless damn holiday. An unfortunate combination of Jewish paranoia and particularism, coupled with an excuse to drink to excess.
It's been 2,500 years. Let it go.

we can have fun and still be safe if we do things responsibly

I like purim because it has a good message about hope and unity. Things seemed bleak, and it seemed like we were doomed. But us coming together, praying, and the effort of Mordichai and Esther, the situation was turned around. This is good for any time. We can each work on effort, prayer and unity. We can deffinately use the blessings

Happy Purim to all the Jews around the world. I hope the kids especially have a fun day of dressing up.

Did the Jews of Europe celebrate this holiday during the Holocaust?
Posted by: Curious Reader | March 20, 2011 at 04:33 PM
Curious:
Actually Purim became their signal holiday.
The concept of Purim is that G-d has hidden himself from us and that we must make the effort to save ourselves and hope for help from above.
For this reason, Esther is the only book in the bible that doesn't mention G-d's name even once.
In the hell of the Holocaust, with no evidence of G-d in the camps, in the ghettos, just an implacable Haman/Hitler and his minions in sight, many people of faith identified with the story of the girl who risked her life to become queen and then to expose an evil plot to an only slightly less evil King.
They despaired of a miracle, and prayed that somehow other kings, other nations would become aware of the atrocities and put an end to their suffering.
And whether you believe it was divinely inspired intervention or whether it was the Soviet, U.S. and other allied armed forces acting for reasons of their own, the nightmare was ended without any overtly miraculous occurrences.
After the Holocaust many secular Jews became observant, and many observant Jews rejected their religion, each reading into the events their own views on how and why.
But therein lies theodicy, and that is another book - the book of Job.
