Japan Reported To Be Furious At Yeshiva Student Pardon
Yosef Bondo was tried, convicted and sentenced in Japan for drug smuggling but, because he was a minor, Bondo was transferred to Israel to serve his sentence. Israel recently pardoned Bondo one year before he would have finished serving it, in apparent violation of its agreement with Japan.
Kikar Shabbat is reporting that the Japanese government is furious that Israel pardoned a Satmar yeshiva student caught smuggling drugs into Japan.

This pardon may influence the outcome of the trial of two of Bondo co-conspirators, two other Stamar yeshiva students currently being held in Japan.

No WSC, just another typical joy of working in retail sales. That kind of asshattery transcends religion

OK. So the next time Japan catches some Charedi criminals we can be sure they will serve their full sentences in Japan (and presumably without kosher food).

From early in this saga there was a rift between Banda and the other two defendants. They each chose separate rabbinical advisers and separate strategies in dealing with the trial. There were some overlapping areas, but in general the camps were split. It seems like Banda's strategy panned out while the others are still firmly enmeshed in their nightmare. you can't blame each party from looking out for themselves. Banda had more leeway, since he was classified as a minor. I am afraid that this will have serious ramifications on the other two boys. The Banda camp created a little ruse by claiming that the Japanese authorities gave their blessing for the pardon deal. While I am assuming that they Israeli authorities did notify the Japanese consulate of their intentions to pardon Banda, I am not so sure that the Japanese response was so enthusiastic. they probably replied that they do not want to interfere with the Israeli judicial process and that they left it up to the Israelis to deal with the matter the way they see fit. That was enough of a green light to proceed with the pardon. If it is true that the Japs are pissed, I don't pity the other two guys.

MMIII, that's right. And the next time an Israeli is arrested in Japan there won't be any deals or leniency. And the judge will be under pressure to issue a harsher sentence.

Before we start apologizing to the Japanese let them first apologize to other Asians for WW2 atrocities. When will that happen? Probably pigs will fly first.

Yaakov Yosef Greenwald, Yosef ben Ita Rivka and Yoel Zev ben Mirel Risa Chava were terribly naive, deluded or mentally ill to accept the suitcase that contained the drugs to take into Japan. It is obvious that people took advantage of the boys for their own nefarious ends. The dictum "When in Rome, do as Romans do !" applies here. When you travel to another country you must obey the laws of that nation. Various judicial systems treat the matter of mental culpability differently. This case has similarities to the one of Akmal Shaikh and China. Fortunately the sentences are not the same. The more justice there is in a nation the more divine blessings it will receive.
