Police enter Kiryas Joel as Satmar hasidim turn the village into a Jerusalem-like war zone.

Apparently certain followers of Rabbi Ahron Teitlebaum posted incendiary posters in the village against Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum. In return, followers of Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum threw garbage in the streets and burned trash dumpsters in protest:

I don't know, whenever I am shown chassidim "riot" or as this headline loudly proclaims “violent” they are usually hooting and hollering or pushing each other. It is the poor garbage bins that are bearing the brunt of the "violence". Kill each other? I don’t think so, unless they curse each other and the curse works.

Greater police work need to be done. You need to catch them in the act or have credible evidence before you throw someone in jail. Being haredi is not enough - it may be enough to the FailedMessaihnites - but not for US law.

What they should do is bait them. Place a nice full trash bin strategically located and monitored with cameras. That is how you will catch the agitators.

My travels took me today to Monticello in Sullivn County, NY, about 25 miles west of Kiryas Joel.

I was appalled at what Monticello has degenerated into. On the main drag, Broadway, it seems as though 90% of the businesses were closed.

The Concord Hotel, where yours truly worked as a bellhop / room service bartender / setup guy back in the 1960's, and made some rather serious money for a college student, has been totally demolished. It looks like it has been nuked. The three golf courses, including the infamous Monster, where yours truly once shot a 79 (honest!), are gone, with weeds overgrowing the once-lush fairways.

But the real shame is in the lesser hotels, such as the Raleigh, which was once a proud member of the Borscht Circuit. It looks the same, but with chain-link fences surrounding the joint. I thought maybe it was a minimum-security adjunct to Otisville. Milling around were hundreds of Hasidim, men in black frock coats, women in shaytels, lots of little kids looking sickly and wan.

There are a bunch of "bungalow colonies," modern buildings which look like army barracks, and inhabited by, you guessed it, Hasidim.

I've seen better in Tijuana, and the favelas of Rio.

Ah the Catskills, I have fond memories of all the years going there year after year for the summer. Most of the time I went to bungalow colonies – modern orthodox ones with dare I say, mixed swimming. To this day I still go there every summer for a week to try to recapture those memories. It just gets harder and harder each year.

I remember when one of the favorite activity on pesach chol hamoed was to trek over to Apollo Mall in Monticello for the outlets, last time I was there (last year) there was nothing open and the parking lot was crumbling with tall weeds shooting up between the cracks. I may be heading up north for a vacation and may spend the weekend at the Kutchers but I don’t think I will do the one week stay this year.

I know they were hoping that gambling would come there but now it is simply too late.

The Catskills are now serving the Chassidim very well. It is a natural fit. They like to live together and the economics of renting a bungalow is compelling. A change in scenery is refreshing especially for many who live in the cramped city. I wish them well.

I'd like to see one that is pre-loaded with lots of combusitble rubbish and when a Charedi comes to set fire to it, a robotic arm comes out, grabs him and tosses him in the bin, the contents of which are automaticaly lit. Of course, current technology is not _quite_ up to the task so the robotic arm could be controlled by volunteers from FailedMessiah who would monitor a video feed 24/6 and activate and control it as necessary. A system of these bins could be placed at strategic locations wherever charedim are to be found. After the bins grabbed a few of them and burned them they might work out that setting fires in bins, and civil disobedience in general, is not a good idea.
