If anyone is looking for some good summer fiction, I'd like to recommend one of my favorite books: "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" by Salman Rushdie.

In this book are two characters in 1960's India who get sent to prison -- one for fraud and the other for multiple murders. Once in prison, both become revered as "tzadiks" by the political party of the poor.

The murderer becomes such a saint, that he convinces a prison guard into letting him free. Afterwards, the prison guards in his unit are regularly rotated out, so no one else becomes enamored.

The political fraudster's popularity only increased by his detention, allowing him to win office from prison.

In all a very good book, that is basically a "rock-n-roll story". I keep thinking about the prison tzadiks in this book whenever I hear Rubashkin defenders go on about his holiness.

The first step in Teshuvah is admitting that you sinned. Rubashkin refuses to admit his guilt, his supporters are not admittinf his guilt and asking for mercy. They are denying his guilt and they can gibe all their money to his lawyers and not pay their rabbeim.
Next step will be a massive investigation of welfare fraud. People who have 10 children and no employable skills have to get money somewhere and Streimels are expensive.

It could also be a matter of style. Chabad is a very public sect, public Menora lightings, telethons, Chabad houses, college presence, etc... Satmar keeps to themselves so I am not surprised. It could be that within their sect they helped or is helping the best they can, I don't know, but one thing is that going public is just not their style.

We just call ed the number on the brochure and the person that answered stated to us and the brochure states that the money is being used for the release "legal fees" for Rubashkin.

One may argue that SMR got a harsh sentence. I say, it was overly harsh for what he was convicted on, but had the government tried him on the more serious charges, it would have been reasonable.

Nonetheless, what really GRIPES MY REAR END about all this isn't the amount of time the Meathead Messiah is going to do, but the attitude of the so-called "yidden" who somehow believe this son of a bitch is a martyr.
