Video: Penn Jillette Eats Treife With Ex-Hasidic Jews In Williamsburg

Penn Jillette Penn says some very nice things about the hasidic lifestyle – even though he calls hasidism a cult.

Oh no - not this bozo again, wasn't there a piece here at FailedMessiah about him getting his jollies by having a supposed orthodox Jew eat treif?

I will try to dig up the link.

"all the men bathe in rainwater..."
LOL

Sounds like the biggest truth being followed here is that naked girls are hot!

They are confused.

The simple but unbelievable truth is that, outside of chassidic circles, the phenomenon of non-english-speaking second -- and third -- generation americans is virtually non-existent.

Mi k'amcha yisroel!

I spent an afternoon in the company of Penn Gillette, and I can honestly say he is one of the most disgusting human beings I have ever met. First of all, when it comes to grooming and personal hygiene, he is a slob. Next, every single word (not every other word or every third word) that comes out of his mouth is an obscenity. I don't mind the occasional "dirty" word, but he has the foulest speech I have ever encountered. Finally he is utterly rude and condescending. I would not have been all that surprised if he had just been rude to no-account, non-famous, non-showbiz people like me, but this event included a number of his showbiz peers of similar stature (or lack of stature). That is, they were all fixtures in the Las Vegas entertainment scene. And he was rude and condescending to every single one of them. No way would I take him out to eat, traif or kosher, voluntarily spend a couple of hours in his disgusting company and pick up the tab yet.

BTW why do goyim think that it is some sort of special blessing that makes food kosher? Of course, there's a brocha for every type of food, but you can recite brochas over meat killed by stunning until you are blue in the dace, and of course it's still traif. I don't know why goyim think otherwise.

First of all, when it comes to grooming and personal hygiene, he is a slob

Did anyone notice that he has red fingernail polish on his, I believe it was ring finger? Strange.

He's a sensationalist. He'll do almost anything to generate controversy.

MM,

Based on your description, it's no wonder that he feels at home among former chassidim.

Did anyone notice that he has red fingernail polish on his, I believe it was ring finger? Strange.

It's two things - something used for misdirection while performing his act (you know, people see it and think "Strange" :) and focus on that instead of what his other hand is doing during the trick), and it's a tribute to his mother.

He started out as a juggler and his mother told him that since people will be watching his hands, he should make sure that his hands look nice. So, he put nail polish on as a joke. He's kept the one nail painted to this day.

He also wears his father's ring on one of his pinkies in his memory (both of his parents died around ten years ago) and a necklace in honor of his sister.

wow a stripper got a jew to renounce his beliefs. i haven't heard of such a thing since last week's parsha. 3500 years later and nothing has changed.

I think the reason he's such an avowed atheist is because he knows a thing or two about illusions...

lol homer

Creo que no, amigo!

wats bothering u shmaya y dont u get yourself a normal job, u sound like a capable guy, u would rather talk to all these low class/ bitter people

Outside of chasidic circles in the USA its considered wrong to smack your wife and kids around. Chasids say its ok and will harrass any chasid who reports domestic violence to the cops.

So, when meeting a chasid, first question should always be "so, you never hit your wife and kids....right?"

This was different than a lot of Penn's stuff. He really seemed to be speaking from the heart. It was honest, personal and insightful. You can't ask for much more than that.

What he said about the costs and rewards of leaving the religious life and his assessment of hassidism is true. Not pleasant, but true.

It is a shame that the whole G-d debate is centered on evolution. What is alarming is that many Rabbis pigeon whole the Tora as precluding the possibility of evolution when there is a strong argument to that effect in our own sources. It is also not a long shot to consider that Adam Harishon was not the first Homo Sapiens. It is not against the Torah to consider this possibility. It is just that it is our job to rectify the sin of Adam and that is what the Torah deals with. Previous generations are of no consequence to us. The tehillim even aludes to a 100 generations before Adam.

Bartley, "rectifying the sin of Adam" is Christianity, not Judaism.

I know all these guys. J, and Alix, and L and D. They told me they went out with Penn. I'm not into the whole atheist thing. It's a whole new religious way of thinking.

There are many isolated communities in the USA that don't speak regular American English even after many generations. It helps keep the community close knit and segregated.

Chassidim are very obvious.

The Amish speak a Germanic dialect.

Ebonics has been around for generations.

Many Russian immigrant continue to speak Russian as a first language to their kids.

In many Hispanic towns, Spanish is the first language (eg Union city NJ etc).

The English that Apalachian Red-necks speaks can hardly be called "American".

The common denominator among all the above examples is that although American English is not their first language, they can each communicate with each other in English, despite the fact that they sound vastly different from each other.

Nice try Forty Eighter, but you're wrong...

The Amish speak German and English.

"Ebonics" isn't a language. It's a dialect of English if it even exists.

The Russians like other immigrants learn English within an generation. And their kids learn English in school.

First generation Latinos may not learn English for a while. But their kids do. And they all have it at least as a second language by the next generation.

The Appalachian dialect is very close to Elizabethan English.

None of your examples works. The self-enforced ghetto of Charedism is pretty much unique in America.

...unique in that a large portion of them refuse to learn English after several generations.

What I find most hysterical are the groups of ex-chassidim sporting tattoos, nose rings and tounge studs whose english neverthless sounds like that of their grandfathers the day they got off the boat from Hungary.

Will Mr. Jillete follow this up by getting catholic priests laid by hookers, and imams drunk or is he focusing solely upon Jews?

critical minyan, what's your point? So you know those guys. You're not an atheist. Cool. Thanks for sharing.

A note about most of the comments on this site:

They are incredibly closed minded, rant oriented, and usually contradict most basic rules of logic and argumentation.

Mordy,

I'd love to help you, but I'm not a veterinarian.

It's sad that these chevra were raised in such ignorance as to believe that if the theory of evolution is viable, then G-d doesn't exist.

Too bad their rabbis scoff at Jewish intellectuals like the Rambam and Saadia Gaon, who believed that science is a way to understand G-d.

Now these people will be giving up their families and and ties to their youth because of their dissimilar beliefs. And they may come back to belief in G-d later on, and feel guilt and a sense of loss for their atheistic years.

Once again, tropper and his cronies have a hand in another tragedy. Remember when they went after the zoo rabbi's book? Had that book remained acceptable in charedi circles, these guys would have ways to still believe in G-d.

Going to strip clubs and becoming close with strippers, on the other hand, would have them sitting with tropper and his cronies anyway...

Bartley, good pts.

A. Nuran, you are not entirely right either.

Re Amish, I grew up in Pennsylvania Amish country, and as of 50-60 years ago when I was a girl, the Amish spoke Pennsylfawnisch Deitsch (Pennsylvania Dutch) and limited English. The Amish have their own schools with their own minimally qualified teachers and only school up to the eighth grade. When I was a girl, the Amish preferred to shop with Jewish merchants because they were more comfortable discussing their requirements with Yiddish speakers than with those who spoke only English. If someone can speak Yiddish, he can handle Pennsylfawnisch Deitsch and vice versa. Now whether this has changed in the many years since I left Pennsylvania, I don't know. I did go to college with "off the derech" Amish, at least one of whom went on to get a PhD.

The proper term for "Ebonics" is African American Vernacular English (AAVE). It is a social dialect, and it certainly exists and is in fact very well documented and the subject of numerous scholarly publications. Many speakers of AAVE can codeswitch and speak Standard English; many others can't.

About thirty years ago I taught at a university in West Texas. I was told by the students of Hispanic background, many of whose families had been in Texas since the Spanish colonial period, that they felt ill-equipped to handle sophisticated academic discourse in either Spanish or English. In fact, their everyday communication was conducted in "Spanglish," the equivalent of the "Yinglish" one sees in the comments on VIN, with both loan words and syntax derived from the relevant non-English language and with many calques.

It is a common mistaken belief that Appalachian English is essentially Elizabethan English. I lived for a while in Kanawha County, WV, and I can tell you first hand that it isn't so. Further I had an excellent student from Knoxville TN who wrote
a first-rate paper outlining the sources of that misperception and debunking it. What is true is that Appalachian English preserves some archaic forms and words lost elsewhere, but that is also true of American English as a whole which preserves some old forms/words that are no longer used in British English. But that is a far cry from asserting that Appalachian English (or the English of Tangier Island for that matter) is "close" to Elizabethan English.

Will Mr. Jillete follow this up by getting catholic priests laid by hookers, and imams drunk or is he focusing solely upon Jews?

No need for him to follow it up.

In 2005 Penn and Teller's B.S. did a program skewering hypocrisy on the parts of Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and the Dalai Lama.

In 2004 they attacked Yoga, Tantra, and New Age beliefs. They also did an episode ripping on the Bible that year.

In 2009 they had an entire episode devoted to the Vatican and the Catholic church (including the child abuse by priests).

He also did a show on circumcision.

But doing a show about something is not the same as leading its adherents astray!

When the Moschiach comes it will all be koosha anyway so what the big deal.

He is not fucking litle boys or girls.
He is not importing drugs to Yisroel.

Good for Him.

Don't forget...AHAVAS YISROEL UBER ALLLES!

Something tells me there was something bothering the guy who went to the strip club before he met the atheist stripper.

If Penn was a charlatan
He could easily have turned the ganze velt upside down with his Tricks
Very few Haredim with a similar talent (if there are any) would resist the urge to be a navi sheker
If the Jewish world today wasn't so full of (fill in expletive)
Then we wouldn't be treated by comtempt with anyone who has half a brain
Ki l'kol ha'am beshgaga

I tried to research why God wouldnt allow pork meat?. ..... If as long the pig you eat is contained and fed properly they should be ok to eat, I asked a few rabbis and i got no answer back. Is there any worm and parasite in pig meat?

I never heard of him. I can see that I haven't been missing much.

to Moshe Aron Kestenbaum without commenting upon the basis of your question. yes there is a danger of worms in pork for more information see wikipedia about Trichinosis
