10-year-olds watch porn films at religious school
Girls studying in Raanana school tell principal boys made them to watch online adult films with them. Municipality: We reduced website filtering level for a limited period of time to allow students to take part in virtual competitions

Children studying in a religious school in the city of Raanana have been watching porn films online. Girls studying in the same school informed their principal that the boys, aged 10 and 11, would invite their female classmates to watch the films with them.
The boys would enter sex websites, shut off the computer screen and then asked the girls to help them fix the "glitch". The girls, who realized the screen was closed, turned it on and were exposed to the obscene images and films.
The girls reported the incident to the school management, but their parents say the school did not inform them of what had taken place within the educational institution and they found out about it by chance.
"We turned to the school management, demanding to know how such a thing could happen and what was being done. But the management told us that the matter was being taken care of and refused to provide any details on how it was being handled and whether the children were punished," one of the parents said.
"We are religious. We don't want our children to be exposed to such sights at home, and definitely not at school. The most irritating thing is that the management tried to hide it from us."
The Raanana Municipality said in response, "Every school in Raanana has an advanced system for filtering websites with a high control and filtering level, which prevents students from entering adult websites.
"Throughout the school year, as the children take part in virtual competition, the filtering level is reduced for a very limited period in order to allow the students to study on scientific websites. The matter was handled immediately by the school principal, and the parents of the involved students were called for a meeting."

I always viewed it as a shortcoming of my public school education that I had to learn all the advanced sexual techniques outside the classroom. However, in Ulpan, the homework in "body parts" was inspirational.

i don't know what religion has got to do with not wanting your kids to watch porn in school or home. This is disgusting.
I would like to know what 10 and 11 year old religious kids are doing entering sexually explicit websites?
Why are the websites they enter for competitions causing them to lower the filtering system to such a degree? They need to sort out how they deal with internet access.
I know alot of schools give each student a name and password so that everything they view is saved into a log in the main system so the school know exactly what the children are viewing.

Apologies to J. Geils Band:
Does she walk? Does she talk?
Does she say brachot?
My homeroom homeroom beshert
Always pulled me from my seat
She was pure like mountain dew
No one could ever stain
The memory of my beshert
Could never cause me pain
Years go by I'm lookin' at a website so unclean
And there's my homeroom beshert in the video clip I've seen
chorus
My heart could plotz
My memory has just been shot
My beshert is a centerfold
(Beshert is a centerfold)
My heart could plotz
My memory has just been shot
(Beshert is a centrefold)
Slipped me notes under the gemara
While I was fixing my fedora
I was shy I turned away
Before she caught my eye
I was shakin' in my kapoteh
Whenever she sang "My Yiddishe Mama"
Something had a hold on me
When beshert passed close by
Those soft and fuzzy sweaters
Too forbidden to touch
Too see her with short length sleeves
Is really just too much
Chorus
It's okay I understand
This is supposed to be the holy land
I hope that when I graduate
I'll see you and won't masticate
Take your chumash, Yes we will
We'll take your chumash and learn it
We'll take it to a bet midrash
And mixed learning won't spurn it
A part of me has just been shtupped
The tchinek from my mind is hocked
Oy vey, I can't overlook it
So, nu, I guess I gotta click on it!
chorus

Pffttt, hahaha, good one.

And why is this newsworthy? And why is it relevant whether these kids were religious, secular, or Chinese?! Boys will be boys!

YL, your best yet.

Why is it"relevant", Yossi? Because they are G-d's Chosen People, and as such are held by G-d to a much higher standard that the goyim. The goyim are like dumb animals.
But you know this. Why play dumb? Why deny G-d's law?

Unsecured internet without any parental controls in place in the hands of children is like a loaded gun. A slight misspell in a Google search, or a slight misspell in entering a URL could lead to content that is inappropriate. As dangerous a situation in any school environment, this applies even more so in a co-ed setting.
As Yossi touched upon, the school was irresponsible in its unfettered and unprotected internet access to its computers. I hope they correct it soon and I hope other schools take note - religious or secular.

There's only one answer: stone the children!
(And then the computers.)

Harold: I don't always agree with you, but you're correct. Even NYC public schools have filters to prevent inappropriate content.

The kids will be tainted for life. Second-class shidduchim will be the end result. They may as well join the chilonim now...

Were these Ashkenazi or Sfardi kids?
Posted by: Ashke Nazi | June 22, 2010 at 01:49 PM
B"H
How do these children even know porn exists? It would seem that it should be so far from their world, that they wouldn't even have given it a thought . . .
Posted by: Michelle | June 22, 2010 at 01:58 PM
Of course, as it is Ranaana, they are probably not only Ashkenazi but anglos (immigrants from English speaking countries), generally South Africa, in Ranaana. After all, they have computers in their classrooms with internet access and were doing science projects!
Not likely that these kids would wander into Emmanuel, but if they did they'd be accepted on the Ashkenazi side. Its all about skin color, not religious belief, in the charedi world. A white convert would be more accepted than a "taymoni" or even worse, a "shvartze tuchis" Moroccan.

Dagnabit, Harold is right.
I wanted to buy some sporting equipment the other day. I thought I entered the URL for the Dick's Sporting Goods site.. boy was I wrong!!!! I reset my browser, cleared cookies, flash cookies, and ran my spyware scanner within seconds.
Porn sites deliberately choose contractions or altered spellings of well known sites in order to generate hits.
Good up-to-date filters are the only answer.. and yes, boys and girls will act upon their curiosity when the opportunity presents.

At least the pornos were anatomically correct. And probably as instructional as observing wildlife or farm animals copulate.
I had to learn about sex from "The Happy Hooker," "Portnoy's Complaint" and similar fare, like those copies of Hustler circulating around 749 (Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY 11213).
And when the kids advance to learn the Babylonian Talmud, they'll have an understanding of "ביאה שלא כדרכה" that even old Adin Steinsaltz wouldn't dare provide. hehe.

jay, is that the excuse you gave your boss?
Posted by: alternative childcare | June 23, 2010 at 12:54 AM
I don't see why the filter had to be disabled to the extent that porn sites could be viewed. It should have been trivial to create a list of permitted sites which hosted the competitions. And if it was a religious school, how could the situation ever arise that boys and girls could even be in contact with each other?
Posted by: David | June 23, 2010 at 03:03 AM
Yes, alternative, I gave myself that excuse.

David: Modern Ortho schools are sometimes mixed. I went to a mixed MO high school.
