Breaking! Haredi Leaders Issue Letter Of Support For Accused Haredi Child Abuser Elior Chen
Chen–whose followers burned infants with hot stones and hit them with hammers allegedly at his request–is widely considered to be the worst child abuser in the history of Israel.
…"Rabbi Elior Chen's business all his life is to spread Torah.…We are committed to demonstrate His righteousness"…
The document, expected to be published in the haredi press and on street ads (Fskwilim) has been obtained by Ynet. It is signed by, among others, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, and Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky – the leaders of non-hasidic haredim.…

So far this is (to me) the most sickening story of its kind. Please keep us posted about its validity. If this is true, it takes my feelings about these 'gedolim' to an entirely new level.
Posted by: flailed | March 11, 2010 at 11:21 PM
If this is truly true, I wish the Rabbanim, Gadolim, would take the opportunity to visit the children who were so cruely abused and then reconsider this outrageous document of support. I hope this IS a hoax because otherwise it is most discouraging and depressing and too unbelievable.

This letter is a forgery. I know a little about Rav Shteinman, and he is mortified when he hears about child abuse or sexual molestation. He is a brilliant man, and there is no chance in the world that he would put his name to this. With all my disagreements with the chareidi rabbonim, they are not stupid and sticking their heads into this affair would be the dumbest thing they could do. There is no doubt here that the letter was forged as a feeble and desperate measure.
Posted by: shlomo zalman | March 12, 2010 at 02:00 AM
This just goes to show that rabunim who dont use the internet are misinformed about what is really going on. These rabunim should get with it and start reading on failed messiah about what is really going on.

People forge all types of letters and spread all types of false rumors especially politicians. Obama the Jew hater tried to cover up his 20 years that he sat in a hitler type church under rev Wright while the self ating liberal jews looked the other way and supported the anti semite Obama. If we see a letter that is legite it would be reprinted in an orthodox paper like Hamodia otherwise anyone can fake a letter.
CHAREIDI POWER GROWING EACH MOMENT
BABIES,BALLOTS and BELIEF and we will run Israel in 8 years and free all Chareidi prisioners including the recent settler who was caught hanging sihns against gays. I would make Yigal Amir head of Mossad as he is a very smart individual. CHAREIDI POWER NUMBER ONE.

Per the hebrew article link posted by Steve.
It was reported that a represntative of R Elyashiv sais that such a letter would never be prapred and to th ebest of his knowledge Elyashiv would never signthe such a letter.
The represntative suggested that either the signature was forged or that the signature was obtained fraudulently.he stated do to the late hour at which he was talking to the reporter he was unable to do anymore reasearch. He added that tomorow th eissue would be looke dinto and a offical orderly statement will be made to calrify what hapened.
Posted by: jake | March 12, 2010 at 05:06 AM
Well, none of the signatories appear to be rushing to unequivocally deny they signed it.
Posted by: effie | March 12, 2010 at 05:44 AM
I agree with Effie; if the rabbis did not sign this document, then why the silence??
Posted by: Chicago Sam | March 12, 2010 at 07:56 AM
Maybe because the Rabbis are not glued to the internet for every bit of gossip, and instead, they are preparing for Shabbat as they are expected to do?
Posted by: george | March 12, 2010 at 08:19 AM
If someone spread an ugly rumor about your wife, would you wait until after the Shabbat to respond to it??
Posted by: Chicago Sam | March 12, 2010 at 08:26 AM
"It's a forgery. Read the article"
time will tell, but if it is it won't be the first time Scotty got egg on his face.
Posted by: Successful Messiah | March 12, 2010 at 08:39 AM
this is too dumb to believe
If there isn't a denial, then we can atatck it, but it seems like a forgery by some nutcase or hatemonger.
Posted by: Eddie London | March 12, 2010 at 08:49 AM
I wish these posts had numbers to reply to. Chicago Sam: in order for me to "respond to an ugly rumor about my wife" I would have to hear about the rumour. Correct? What if such a rumour was right here today in place of this alleged letter. But, I did not bother, today, to log into the internet to read the news. What would it mean, in that case, if I did not respond to it?
Now let me tell you reality. Reality is, each and every week (especially near Fridays) there is a plethora of alleged (but false) pronouncements, allegedly (but falsely) signed, by allegedly these and other noted Rabbis. Mostly these have to do with internal or religious matters that the news media rarely talks about them, so no-one outside the community hears about them. This forgery problem has been happening for years. The policy has long been practiced to ignore them. The volume of these forgeries is completely unmanageable. That such a police-matter and public matter was forged is a new twist that took them by surprise, but these Rabbis have immense committments that take up all their time.

I agree that this letter is not real, but if you want to see real rabbinic corruption, then see: http://mamzeralert.blogspot.com/
http://rabbiniccorruptionatrcc.blogspot.com/ the rabbis want their hand into everything that can bring in the "cash" even if it means going against halacha! these scandals relating to gittin can mirror some of the pedophile scandals as they both leave scars for decades as well as destroy families!!! i hope more attention is raised aginst rabbinic corruption with gittin. its purely fed by the feminist agenda

In accordance to one Israeli web site (http://news.israelinfo.ru/health/32465) Steinman admitted signing the letter, so it is not forged. Steiman explained that he signed it "by accident" among other letters.
I do not believe that the same "accident" simultaneously hit Elyashiv, Kanievski et al. Or they all never read whatever they sign or Steinman supports Chen but lied to save remnants of charedi reputation.
Posted by: mau | March 12, 2010 at 02:11 PM
Chen's people are the one's trying to perpetrate this fraud. They should be locked up with him. The Lipa ban was signed the same way this letter was signed. So was the Grossman appeal. You can get any rabbi to sign onto anything as long as he is not familiar with what he's signing. Just try to sound convincing and you can sell him the Brooklyn Bridge. A very sad state of affairs indeed.
Posted by: steve | March 12, 2010 at 02:38 PM
I guess you gotta give the KKK credit too sometimes.

Chen is a hero to us Chareidim! In 8 years, Israel will be run by a combination of Yigal Amir and Rabbi Chen! HAREIDI POWER NUMBER 1! KILL ALL THE HOMOSEXUALS!!! FORCE ALL GIRLS TO MARRY AT AGE 12!!!!!

Just to point out that the first signatory to this letter, Rabbi Asher Lemel Cohen, is the Chabad leader and Rabbi of Beitar Ilit, where Elior Chein lived and executed his sick torture rituals.
Why would a Chabad Rabbi defend such a sicko?

Not to change the subject, but Michael Steinhardt wrote an op-ed piece in the WSJ calling for Israel and the West to resettle Palestinian refugees, pay reparations to them (to the tune of $75 - $100 billion), and apologize for treating Palestinians badly.
One of two things is possible here: (1) This is a belated Purim joke, or (2) that Steinhardt, at age 69, is suffering from early senility.
Posted by: Mr. Apikorus | March 13, 2010 at 07:02 AM
it has been officially denied by the Haredi rabbis
http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasite/spages/1156061.html
it was a forgery, as others have suggested.
Posted by: Eddie London | March 13, 2010 at 02:42 PM
This was obviously a fraud. The case was so well publicized that everybody knew about it... No way that gedolim or any other respectable person would lend their support...

Chen is a hero to us Chareidim
I don't begrudge anybody's right to post his or her opinions, no matter how ridiculous they are. I can even put up with grave factual errors. We can attribute such nonsense to a lack of basic education and "tinok shenishbah syndrome". However, there has to be a limit. A comment such as this must be condemned and removed from any blog forum, no matter how liberal the blogmeister may be with his posters. There is such a thing as abusing a privilege. I believe that Chayim has clearly stepped over the line this time.

Actually, I believe he's either Jose Torres Puello or some teenaged boy who needs to get laid.
