Na Nach is not Breslev, it is an offshoot of Breslev to which many Israelis - who would otherwise join any other type of cult - find themselves. it is somewhat superficial and simplistic but so what? these guys always bring a smile to those around them. i would rather see these guys with peyess than shaven-headed & in saffron robes in some indian ashram. far more agreeable & less threatening than the messianism of chabad.
Posted by: Wintonski | February 02, 2010 at 05:50 AM
I agree that Na Nach is no where as near as bad as chabad or any of the many other crazy groups out there.
As crazy as it is a least they are basing themselves on statements of a zadik.
And the fact is that they are probably more honest than the other breslov groups as to what they are really about.
I have on my own blog written a tremendous amount of criticism on breslov and yet in the long run i have to admit that since rebbi nachman himself was a tzadik there must be a some good in people taking his teaching to heart.
Posted by: avraham | February 02, 2010 at 06:28 AM
looks like they are having fun, not sure what they are about? or breslev. It seems something somewhere went wrong with breslov. But these guys hey they seem harmless and having a good time
Posted by: seymour | February 02, 2010 at 06:38 AM
Well at least they're getting lots of exercise! Fit, not like the average yeshivah bocher who basically just sits all day...
Posted by: zach | February 02, 2010 at 06:54 AM
Thanks for the video, loved it. Nothing wrong here whatsoever. The last time that I went to Israel (not the one that I just came from) I went with a modern orthodox group and this was our theme. We had a ball and did the Na Nach song and dance wherever we went. From the Kotel to the beaches of Eilat. We had a contest among ourselves as to who could get the most strangers to do "the dance". Most people joyfully complied. We had a ball. Totally harmless fun. In fact my daughter and I use the "Rabbi Nachman" song as out ringtone.
Many thanks for the video, it brings back such great memories!

I read the nanach blog. Despite the image of the smiling face with the peyos, there's a lot of anger there against their opponents. I'm afraid that this could blow up. Not that I suspect every random nanach of being dangerous, only a few of them.
They also sometimes write about how they insist on playing their music loudly even when it bothers people. I like loud music myself, but I turn it down if asked.

Can some one explain the textual basis for the Na Nachs' creation of the mitzvah of grafitti?
Posted by: Office of the Chief Rabbi, SHLITA | February 02, 2010 at 07:36 AM
That's all fine and good until you scratch the surface. Lots of crime, drug use, and untended psychiatric issues in that crowd. Aside from the entirely un-Jewish backstory of the kvittel from Heaven, in which the founder of the group, after what appears to be a psychotic episode, finds a note "from R. Nachman" in his gemora.
Its also worth noting that many claim to be "Breslov", such as this group, or R. Schick's group (the ones who hand out the pseudo R. Nachman booklets), but it all has very little to do with the actual R. Nachman's teachings, which are quite deep and radical; this already occurred at the end of his life, and he had some negative things to say about it (reportedly, he said he was never so alone as when among his chassidim).

OK, dancing in the street, good, but where are the girls?
Posted by: Teddy | February 02, 2010 at 10:22 AM
I grew up in Breslov (the genuine one that is) and could tell you just this; Unfortunately Breslov atracted all sorts of lunies. Nothing new. The real Breslovers are very outspoken against these groups. Shick, Berland, Odeser (Na nach) and the likes have caused great damage to Breslov. They hijacked the name for personal gains but have nothing in common with the real deal. The elders of Breslov do not want Machloket so they do not denounce these groups publicly. Internally it is a well known fact and the NORMAL chassidim totally distanced themselves from these crackpots.

Apology to Martha & Vandellas, et al:
Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a freihlich beat
Breslov's here and the time is right
For dancing in the streets
Dancing in Uman
Down in Jerusalem
In New York City
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
They'll be shuckling, swaying, klezmer playing,
Dancing in the street, oh
It doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as black is there
So come on, every guy, grab a bochur, everywhere, don't be a slacker
They'll be dancing, dancing in the street
It's an invitation across the nation, a chance for Yidden to meet
They'll be davening and singing and music swinging
Dancing in the street
Philadelphia, PA
Brooklyn in NYC now
Don't forget the Holy city
On the streets of Uman
Back in the USSR
No matter where you are
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
They'll be davening, swaying, chassidim praying
Dancing in the street, oy
It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as black is there
So come on every guy, grab a guy, everywhere, don't make me cry
They'll be dancing, dancing in the streets
Way down in T.A. [Tel Aviv], everyday
Dancing in the streets
Na na Nachman too
A choshiver Jew
Dancing in the street
Don't you know
They'll be dancing
Dancing in the street (repeat)

Hell, the Eretz Nehederet parody is hilarious even if you don't speak Hebrew;
maven: that's true, but they are still by a long shot less disturbing than Chabad is when you scratch ITS surface.
(Though the whole 'petek' thing is similar to how Chabadniks ask 'questions' of the Rebbe today)
Posted by: Meir | February 02, 2010 at 01:35 PM
Well, the "petek" was supposedly much more miraculous--a petek from the Rebbe made directly available to a student heartbroken that he had, um, broken a fast (psychotic episode?):
Rabbi Dovid Sears commenting on Wikipedia & Na Nach Nachma -- childish prank theory of miraculous petek
The Na Nach "movement" was started by a group of French baalei teshuvah who discovered an elderly Breslover Chassid named Rabbi Yisrael Ber Odesser z"l in an old age home in Eretz Yisrael. When they heard his story about having received a "petek" or letter from Rebbe Nachman when he was a bochur in Slonimer Yeshivah, they believed Reb Yisrael Ber and began to disseminate the now-famous petek and the "mantra" it contained: "Na Nach Nachma Nachman me-Uman!"
This is evidently based upon the Shem be-Achorayim, which the Rebbe mentions in Likkutei Moharan II, 8 (the last lesson the Rebbe gave, also known as "Tiku / Tochakhah"). Whoever invented the petek substituted the Rebbe's name for the Shem HaVaYaH and added "me-Uman."
I was personally told by Rav Zvi Ashkenazi, a Slonimer Chassid and one of the leading shochtim u'bodkim in America, that his grandfather had written the petek and tucked it into one of Reb Yisrael Ber's seforim as a childish prank. But when he told his extremely devout and temimusdikeh classmate that it was a joke, Reb Yisrael Ber refused to believe him. (Which shows you the danger of letzonus!)

Paul- I used that language (psychotic episode) because of the description Odesser gives in his sefer.

Na nach are kool and we need more of them to influence the secular young Israelis to yiddishkeit.
Posted by: Chayim | February 02, 2010 at 07:05 PM
Hey they have fun and make people happy. They generally don't bother anyone so why not enjoy them. They add a little something to your day when you come across them. These guys are very entertaining.
Posted by: Big Jew | February 02, 2010 at 10:25 PM
maven--well, other reports say he was guilt-ridden and sad--he didn't come out himself and say "and then I had a psychotic break from reality"? he reported the petek as a genuine communication from R. Nachman -- although some thought it was forged and there is the schoolboy prank scenario--that said--his purported last words, well, they are problematic:
"All the world, and the whole government, do not know who I am! Behold, I inform them who I am! I am Na Nach Nachma Nachman Me'Uman!
Who is the Rebbe of the whole world? Rebbe Na Nach Nachma Nachman Me'Uman!
I am Na Nach Nachma Nachman Me'Uman!"
Posted by: Paul Freedman | February 02, 2010 at 11:46 PM
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein supported Rabbi Odessor and I remember him when he was 105 years old addressing a gathering in manhattan. He went through a tough life and lost his 5 sons so at least he inspired so many young Israelis who would be buddist otherwise. He was a good soul.

Maven ur a pos, basically. Rabaynu says he is the river that cleanses from all stains and he will sing the song of the future that is paradise( olam haba) for all the righteous and God fearing you are killing ppl every second ( you, sears yemach shmo, ashkenazi ymsh and all the fake breslevers that turn the tables and say nanach is using rabaynu for money but the bri and mea shearim are sick child molesters) because you knowingly lie about what is NaNach. I can't continue unless you engage me, psychopath. So go ahead, make my day. Hold back the geula some more and maybe Elohim will take you away. Not maybe, if you continue to tell ppl lies surpressing their souls' potentials, he will surely take you away. I feel bad for you. But I feel worse for the innocent bystanders of your homicidal tendencies. Ttyl

Levi. Go to the Nanach shul in Meron or tzfat(darom) and you will see nanachs have fiery NaNach wives ( u say it's mostly male) and they don't do drugs. It's not nice what u said, and you shouldn't say it any more unless u want to be a pos liar. Ok?

Oh yeah. To the idiot, "nach", who grew up in " genuine breslev". Everyone knows that according to the tzadikim, the spreading of R. Nachmans books is the key to the redemption. The only ones that print and distribute the Original books of R. Nachman are the followers of "Saba" the ppl that claim to follow R. Nachman (supposedly your family included) but only take money and POWER in the tzadiks name, then sit on your sore rumps all day long doing mostly nothing, occasionally bad things, sometimes mocking Na Nach. Yeah right, geniune breslev. You guys know Rabaynu says mashiach will come to reveal R. Nachman, the 7th beggar, but you make like Rabaynu's ppl are some exlusive group of high society mea shearim dwelling hermits. That throw stones at ppl who pass through, and don't want anyone coming near to see who you really are( using and abusing his name for money and power and corruption of untold levels, then you are baffled when only these bt's are zoche to his name "expanded" anyone with numbers of lessons in lm where he says that Gods name is together with ours, or tons of other obviously NaNach torahs that only bt's seem to understand, but not ppl of status that were raised "breslev". Please post numbers of these lessons, and excerpts. :-) thanx. Peace, love, and breslov. Ps to NaaNaach: get sabanoon in on this. Post outright in ur name on nanach.net that he should start posting here. He'll see it

the story of the slonimer dropping his opposition to Breslev, as told by "Saba", in his autobiographical works: 80 yrs ago, Breslev( R. Nachman's books) were in a massive cherem by all the hassidic leaders at the time. Including R. Mottel Slonimer. Young "Saba", Dov Odesser was being given personal tutoring by the slonimer at the time, chavrusas, like. When The Slonimer saw the note, and heard young "Saba"'s account of the note appearing in a locked drawer( he had to lock it, b/c zealous men from the Slonim group liked to steal and dispose of his books) and the sign that noone knew that Saba didnt fast. plus maybe the Slonimer knew that R. Nachman foretold of the redemption song being revealed in 1922(Jessy kramer of the bri knows that the megilat sesarim is known to reveal this, and the dog says Saba made it up). Well the Slonimer decided to personally interview all of the men in the Slonimer group in R
Tevaria. And when he had finished and noone fessed up, the Slonimer said, " if so, I withdraw my opposition to breslev

This was a great video! First i want to say i`m a bnei noah and i do believe in the Petek.
People instead of fighting between each other should look at the big picture of what is Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman.
Open your eyes ,can you see the joy, happiness and dialogue it provoke between nations?
I know peoples who were totally against jews and did a complete 360 after watching a video of SABA and now walk around with the Petek in there pocket.
Wake up the signs are there!

That sockpuppet set of postings sure did prove that there's some trouble beneath the benign surface. I had a friend who made the mistake of marrying one of these NaNach guys in Israel, they did alot of drugs and supported themselves by breaking in to houses, she had to divorce him within a few months, it was very sad.

I like Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman. It is the name and song of the True Tzadik, Foundation of the World, and it makes us happy and sweetens and redeems and reverses all to the good. It annuls all sheker/falsehood and false leaders and reveals the true Rosh Bnei Israel/Head of the Israelites is the great RAV NACHMAN!

Those in Yavne'el and in the US that are under Schick have forever sealed all my thoughts of disassociation with R. Nachman. For if Yaskha can boil in sperm forever because of what the goyim did to his teachings, so can R. Nachman for the Schickians who have corrupted his. Schick is a rasha for listening and speaking lashon hara, for pitting Jew against Jew, for doing Jewish mafia practices, and for speaking lies against other Jews.
