National Campaign: School Children Write To Rubashkin
Kids Write to Reb Sholom Mordechai
Matzav.comNote: Matzav.com would like to spearhead a national writing campaign for Reb Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin. We are asking all rabbeim and teachers to take part in this effort to provide chizuk to a wonderful, upstanding man who has been the target of a witchhunt. Most readers of this site are well aware of the nature of this case and have joined in davening on his behalf and contributing to the pidyon shvuyim fund to ensure that the legal team representing Reb Sholom Mordechai can continue fighting for justice.
As Rav Dovid Schustal said this past Motzoei Shabbos, the tzaar of one Yid is the tzaar of gantz Klal Yisroel. Have your students and children write letters of chizuk and concern and mail them to Reb Sholom Mordechai at the address below. Feel free to send copies of the letters, pictures, or a write-up about your effort to Matzav.com for us to share with all the readers here.
The letters provide tremendous chizuk for Reb Sholom Mordechai, and while we all are still hopeful that he will merit a yeshuah, we would like to make the time that he must spend in prison at this point more pleasant. Your kind words and encouragment are so valuable.
There are countless stories of the achdus generated by the effort to assist Reb Sholom Mordechai and the remarkable generosity of Jews all over the country - and the world. We hope to share some of these stories in the future.
COLlive.com reports: Reb Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, still in a Cedar Rapids prison, has been receiving letters of support, from 6th graders too. This week, the 6th grade English class at Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Crown Heights spoke about the fact that Reb Sholom Mordechai is in jail.
The students heard the story of Reb Sholom Mordechai’s ordeal, beginning from when his family opened the Agriprocessors meat plant until the recent court case and conviction.
A lesson was then given on writing letters and each of the students wrote a personal letter to Reb Sholom Mordechai.
The letters were edited in class and at home with the help of their parents.
When completed, the letters will be sent out to the Iowa Correctional Center, where Reb Sholom Mordechai is currently incarcerated.
The teacher of the class, Yosef Shidler said, “I hope that other classes around the world will follow this idea; it would be amazing if Shalom Mordechai received hundreds of letters from Jewish children worldwide.”
Anyone who wants to send a letter to Reb Sholom Mordechai can do so. Letters and other correspondence for Reb Shalom Mordechai may be sent to:
Linn County Correctional Center
Inmate Shalom Rubashkin
P.O. Box 608
Cedar Rapids, IA 52406-0608
Make sure to write a return address or the mail will not be delivered to him.
Please continue to daven for Reb Shalom Mordechai ben Rivkah.
The need for financial support is still very strong. Anyone who can help out and can lend support should take a moment to send a donation to the Pidyon Shvuyim Fund. The help of Yidden across the globe is severely needed.…
I have seen an upside down world...right down here on earth.

I urge the parents of 'would be letter writers' to encourage their children to make better use of their precious time, performing charitable works, to help less fortunate people in the world.

This is what passes for an English lesson there. No wonder they are functional illiterates.

This truly sickens me. The values that children are being taught. This is almost like child molestation!!

No reason that readers of FM can't start a letter writing campaign too! I say we send 15,000 letters or so urging SMR to repent and make full and complete restitution, which would be the best example he could set for impressionable Chabadniks!

OK lets say you have a legal trangression and get tossed in the pokey. You can bunk with either SMR, Madoff, or Rothstein. Who do you pick?
Posted by: justice seeker | December 02, 2009 at 05:33 PM
I'd pick Madoff. Whatever stocks he likes, I'd sell short, and vice versa. Based upon his track record, I'd be a billionaire in no time.

I know ...
The kids could send their letters to Judah Maccabee c/o Matzav at the North Pole. On the first night of Channukah Judea Massabee in his blue and white tights, and his elf Pinchus Lipshitz will come down the chimney into SMR's cell and deliver them personally!

when he writes back he will ask them to send cigarettes.

Boy, I bet the jail can't wait to get rid of him. They have to open and examine all that mail.

Dear Shalom,
My teacher told us that we should write to you so that you can keep doing Hashem's work by torturing animals and immigrants. And we hope you can go back to making lots of money off the goyim which will bring back Moshiach and then we can have a big kiddush with cake and Mountain Dew. Hope you have fun in the pen!
Sincerely,

If the children can include a few dollars cash, Reb Sholom would be most grateful.

Unfortunately, there are many grade school kids and whole classes in Europe that write death row prisoners. Truth in pen pals: They should tell the kids what they did to land on death row first.

Could someone please explain the Chabad and Mountain Dew joke?

If one does include such a donation will it reach Sholom? Are letters opened and read by prison officials? I have no idea what freedoms are lost when one enters prison.

Mountain Dew and vodka were served in Nov. 2008 when Rubashkin got out on bail:

There were a few more stories back then also.

Jakes ~
Mountain Dew was 'dubbed' the drink of choice, mixed with vodka, at the gathering celebrating Sholom's release from jail last year. Someone passed this information, complete with photos, to the media. There were Mountain Dew bottles littering the room where the celebration took place.
It has become a source of humor, ever since.

. . . I have penned a new name for the cocktail. I call the combination - 'Dew Process'.
Posted by: AGRI-vated Angel | December 02, 2009 at 10:00 PM
To Agri-vated: I like it, except now SMR is in the pokey and headed for the pen, and will need jailhouse protection maybe the drink should be called "Dew me".

why not invite the gentiles to join too. they are accustomed to send letters to santa, they could tell them this one is younger, black beard. (but he doesn't reciprocate, he takes the whole loot!).

Rabbi Rubashkin was the rebbe's first habad shaliach to Iowa before there were any other shluchim in Iowa and operated a slaughterhouse to raise money to support habad activities in Iowa. Now that he has been very successful in establishing habad of Iowa, he now merits to go on shlichut to a place where no other habad shaliach has previously merited to go, the Linn county jail. Rabbi Rubashkin is on shlichut to wherever he will be sent to find jewish prisoners and teach them torah, mitzvot, and hasidut and get these jewish prisoners to become shomre torah umitzvot. He is being sent to places where no other rabbi merits to go to, not even prison chaplains. A jewish prison chaplain is sent only to those prisoners who are allready religious enough to request the services of a jewish chaplain, but Rabbi Rubashkin will merit to meet with jewish prisoners who do not even know that they are jews and jewish prisoners who have no interest in being jews and he will be able to inspire the jews who are mamash the lowest of the low, prisoners with no jewish background except that their mother's mother was jewish, to want to be jews and do teshuva shlemah. This is something that no other rabbi has the opportunity to do, not even jewish prison chaplains.

Yosef Ben Matitya -
I have considered sending Sholom a Christmas greeting & a lump of coal. He has been very naughty throughout the past twenty + years.

The Chilul Hashem continues to march onward with these mislead parents.
Rather than writing letters, maybe the parents should use this time as a teachable moment that crime does not pay, and personal responsibility.
When will our people learn, and begin to believe, that this man is a bonofide crook.

former gush katif farmer tzvi magid: He's in jail pending trial. He's not there to teach anyone anything. Same will apply in prison. They do allow prisoners to counsel fellow prisoners but not without permission.

YBM-I love that idea! I have some extra Christmas cards from what bought for my overseas Facebook friends and non-Jewish relatives. Comrade Rubaskin is most worthy of one as well.

As SMR inspires his fellow inmates on the merits of his innocence, they in turn could help him count the money that will buy cigarettes and soap to keep him safe in the showerroom.
