Amazing that an autistic, non Jew should have become the world's expert on how to reconcile shechita with humane practice.

I was blown away the first time I read an essay by her. After a few sentences she goes right into "It states in the tractate chulin....The Shulchan Orach codifies this as... Authoritative deciders of Jewish law have allowed these variations...etc (all with efficient citation. Naturally someone helped her. But by her own account she first started in on this by reading chulin in translation.

I am now reading another of her books about the advantages of autistic perception. At first I thought it would be silly, but she clarifies how her drive to see facts themselves helped her notice all sorts of things in stockyards that affected animals that no one else could even see. After applying her advice many stockyards are able to effectively move cattle with way less use of electric prods.

If she was yid, and they could give smichah in the specialty of Tzar baal hachayim, she would probably be the posek hador (the ultimate living decider of questions of Jewsih law).

I am only sorry I will not have access to a television tonight.

It's not really that amazing. She's the leading authority in her field and has studied everything connected with it.

Why shouldn't she be a posek in that limited areas? She probably knows more about it than anyone alive. She's dedicated her life to understanding every aspect of the question. She isn't Jewish and isn't male, but the truth is the truth no matter who tells it.
