A Call To Arms: Haredi Riot Leaders In Long Island For Shabbat – And Fundraising

The rebbes whose hasidim beat women, attack police and social workers, and who rioted and burned Jerusalem neighborhoods are being hosted by a shul in Lawrence, NY tonight.

The grapevine tells me that one of the high ranking Hasidic Rabbis who sponsors and facilitates violent attacks against women and policemen will be appearing this Shabbos at Congregation Sharay Tefilah in Lawrence, NY.  

Followers of Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Kohn, the Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok Rebbe or of his brother, Rabbi Dovid Kohn, the Toldos Aharon Rebbe, are the perpetrators of bus beatings in Bet Shemesh and Jerusalem, street riots, and the violent protests last summer in Jerusalem. Though Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Kohn and Rabbi Dovid Kohn, as supreme ruler of their chasidim, have the power to shut down the violence in an instant, both have steadfastly refused to do so. Instead they teach hate, and look the other way when their Hasidim act on their lessons. Moreover, both are leaders of the strongly anti-Zionist Edah HaChareidis.

It's probably too late to organize a mob outside with pitchforks and placards, but if you find it outrageous that Lawrence is playing host to man who disparages and disdains their values, and helping him raise funds, I encourage you to call the shul, and to politely ask why they are giving aid and assistance to this man, and supporting the chillul hashem that occurs, and continues to occur under his watch.

UPDATE 1:40 pm CDT – I tried to call the synagogue's rabbi and office but got trapped in the voicemail system.

So I did some research.

Rabbi Dovid Weinberger, the shul's rabbi, is married to a granddaughter of haredi gadol Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg. Rabbi Scheinberg is perhaps best known here for allegedly telling Rabbi Yehuda Kolko's child sex abuse victims and their families that, because Kolko did not penetrate the boys, there was no abuse according to halakha.

Therefore, allegedly reasoned Scheinberg, victims and families would be forbidden to go to police or social workers. Doing so, Rabbi Scheinberg allegedly ruled, would be a violation of both lashon hara and mesira law.

Rabbi Weinberger has been honored by the OU.

His father-in-law, Rabbi Nisson Alpert, was close to Rabbi Moshe Feinstein.

Rabbi Weinberger has also published several ArtScroll books.

And, in the best haredi fashion. Rabbi Weinberger is out of town until Sunday morning.

Very sad. I can still remember the days when "mainstrean" chareidis would avoid such people as "muktze machamas miyus". Its even sadder that the idiotic Lawrence crowd is pandering and raising funds for people who view them beneath contempt. ( But, of course for money, the Rebbe will tolerate the "modernishe ferds" that are hosting him) The Lawrensnobs should know that next time a riot takes place or g-d forbid some Israeli police officer gets hurt, they will be directly responsible and blood will be on their well- manicured hands

Actually, perhaps its not such a bad shidduch after all. These 2 groups have a lot more in common than we think. For instance:

Both groups have something to "burn"-

Reuven, do you admit that these men facilitate attacks on women and police? That they encourage rioting and burning of municipal property? If the allegations are true, by virtue of what exactly are they "holier" than modern orthodox rabbis, who don't encourage violence?
