The Forward Selectively Tells The 5WPR–Birthright Israel Story

Birthright israel taglit logoStory's origin masked by Forward. Credit not given where credit is due.

Regular readers know I broke last years 5WPR scandal, catching 5WPR VP Juda Engelmayer illegally impersonating Agriprocessors critics on the blog. Regular readers also know I broke the story of Birthright Israel hiring 5WPR.

But when you read this piece from the Forward, you'd never know the latter and the former is buried near the bottom of the piece.

I don't know why the piece is written as it is, and I doubt Nathaniel Popper made the choice to minimize my role.

But I do know the story the Forward tells is inaccurate and incomplete.

I also know with certainty the Forward knew I broke the latest 5WPR scandal, and it knew the story behind Birthright's founding and my role in that.

The Forward mentions a post made by Rabbi Andy Bachman on his blog. (You can see it in full below.) That post links to my post breaking the story.

I also know Dan Sieradski told the Forward I broke the story.

And when a reporter working for the Forward called me, I made all these points clear.

In other words, when the Forward minimized my role, it did so intentionally.

Besides the given of being a skilled journalist, the person who runs the Forward has to know the Jewish community. And that person has to have courage and be honest.

The case can easily be made the new management of the Forward is lacking on every count.

Birthright Scored for Picking P.R. Firm Tied To Scandal, Hard Right Politics
By Nathaniel Popper • Forward

Taglit-Birthright Israel, one of the most widely praised Jewish communal programs, is facing a rare dose of criticism from within the Jewish world after deciding to hire a public relations company with big national clients — and a history of controversy.

Birthright, which sends young Jews on free 10-day trips to Israel, has retained the services of 5W Birthright israel taglit logo Public Relations, a brash young firm that has represented rap stars, as well as corporate giants like Fannie Mae and the Loews Regency Hotel.

5WPR and its CEO Ronn Torossian have also attracted for some of their smaller clients, including the soft-pornography company Girls Gone Wild. While the firm has represented prominent, non-partisan Jewish organizations, it is also known for clients that espouse views on the far right of Israeli politics.

The recent criticism of Torossian is about his politics and also about his company’s tactics. Last summer, his firm was caught posting fraudulent comments on Web sites, impersonating the critics of one of the firm’s clients – the kosher meat company Agriprocessors.

All of this has been cited in the criticism of Birthright’s decision. Jewish activist and journalist Dan Sieradski has started an online petition calling on Birthright to drop 5WPR. Rabbi Andy Bachman, a rising star in the Reform movement and a fan of Birthright, posted a long item on his blog chastising Birthright.

“You can’t hire an unethical person to represent a program that is supposed to inspire people to connect with the Jewish tradition – and all the great things Judaism has to offer,” Bachman, the chief rabbi at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn, told the Forward. “A person with questionable integrity sullies the brand — it’s that simple for me.”

Torossian would not comment on the criticism of Birthright’s decision to hire him, but he did note that the person at his firm responsible for the problems with Agriprocessors is no longer employed by his company.

Birthright Israel is sponsored by a combination of funding from the Israeli government, American Jewish federations and Jewish philanthropists around the globe. Birthright Israel officials did not respond to repeated requests for comment on their decision to hire 5WPR.

In the midst of the current blowback over Birthright, Torossian received another hit of bad news when the New York City Department of Labor visited the offices of 5WPR on August 17. The visit was first reported on the Web site Gawker. The department of labor confirmed to the Forward that the visit to 5WPR was part of an “ongoing investigation” of the company. Torossian told the Forward in an e-mail that: “The department of labor made a random site visit.”

Torossian has been taken to task in the past by Gawker for his allegedly harsh treatment of employees and people who have crossed his path. Last year, Gawker published e-mails that Torossian had written to a former employee, whom he was suing. In one e-mail, he wrote: “You will pay for the rest of your life for trying to ruin my business.”

“Let’s see if you ever work again,” he added in a series of e-mails that were filled with expletives.

In the past, Birthright’s 10-day trips have been conspicuous for not aligning with any particular point of view on the Israeli political spectrum. But until now, for the last four years, Birthright had retained Rabinowitz/Dorf Communications, which is known for working with liberal, Democratic Party politicians, leading Jewish organizations and, more recently, J Street, a new lobbying group which has often been strongly critical of Israel.

Ronn Torossian

Torossian, 34, is proud of his right-wing political beliefs. When he lived in Israel after college, he founded an organization called Yerushalayim Shelanu, or Our Jerusalem, which worked to push Israeli Arabs out of Jerusalem.

In 2004, he told the Forward, “The PLO or P.A., or whatever the gangsters call themselves today, have no place in Jerusalem.”

Torossian’s views have been highlighted frequently by Jeffrey Goldberg, an alumnus of the Forward who now writes for The Atlantic Monthly, where he has dubbed Torossian’s advocacy of mass military retaliation against Palestinian civilians “a Nazi idea”.

“He represents the hardest right on the Israeli spectrum,” Goldberg told the Forward, criticizing Brithright for its choice.

These politics were cited by Bachman, the Brooklyn rabbi, in his critique of Birthright’s move. But Torossian has received even more criticism from the Jewish activists who caught 5WPR employees impersonating critics of Agriprocessors last year. Shmarya Rosenberg, who first discovered the fraudulent posts on his blog Failed Messiah, has written long posts on his blog detailing Torossian’s past. The man who started the online petition against Torossian, Sieradski, had been involved in discovering the fraudulent posts on the Web site of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, where he worked at the time.

“I physically caught 5WPR engaged in these tactics,” Sieradski said. “I know from firsthand experience that this is the shady business that they deal in.”

In the blog posts that landed 5WPR in such trouble, a 5WPR employee pretended to be Rabbi Morris Allen, who has been one of the leading critics of Agriprocessors.

When asked about Birthright’s decision to hire Torossian, Allen said, “the best I could say is I was surprised.”

With reporting by Josh Nathan-Kazis and Devra Ferst.

Here is Rabbi Andy Bachman's post where he links to my post that broke the story. It's the only 5WPR post on his blog, and it proves the Forward knew what it was doing when it wrote me out of that part of the story:

Keep It Simple
Here's a public relations problem, easily avoided if we just keep it simple:

Ronn Torassian, recently hired by birthright to do its PR, already does PR for some fairly unsavory ideas. His firm, 5W Public Relations, was caught up in defending Agriprocessors in the face of their own workplace and workers rights debacle; in addition, he's all mixed up with Irving Moskowitz's drive to establish Jewish homes in the Palestinian neighborhood of Ras al Amud, the Silwan, and Sheikh Jarra, from Hawaiian Gardens profits, a real estate power grab that is about total control of Jerusalem (not really about security) and will only harm chances for peace. In a recent interview with the Jerusalem Post, Torassian referred to President Obama as "a disaster." (There's no such thing as 'bad' PR, I guess.) We should mention the Rev John Hagee as well. (If 5WPR did Hagee's website on the other hand, kudos! That site is amazing.

Inexplicably, 5WPR also has represented the American Jewish Congress, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, American Friends of Magen David Adom, and the Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

Besides learning that he represents Evian Water, Budweiser Beer, AND birthright, you get to learn all sorts of interesting things about Torassian, like, with regard to the media ban in Gaza last winter, "No, I think it was very smart not to permit the press to enter Gaza. This isn't a war between two equals; it's a war between a civilized democratic nation and a group of murderers and terrorists. And the media have difficulty grasping that - though whether this is due to actual difficulty grasping it or whether it is purposeful is open to interpretation." Hey, I was in favor of the Gaza War as well--it's just that I'd prefer to have media and reporting to monitor behavior of all sides. When a military can operate without witnesses, human rights abuses always increase. Look at Iran most recently--there the press helps the revolution, no?

The issue here is the wrong-headed notion that birthright NEEDS PR. It does? Really? Why? Word of mouth alone make it a great idea that everyone already knows about. And it's FREE. That generally gets people's attention as well.

Look, everyone has a right to make a buck, I guess. And everyone has a right to get some good press, too. But what was so wrong with birthright's press ("Free Trip to Israel!" posters when I worked at NYU did the job each year) that one has to go into business with a guy who represents unethical religious people (Agriprocessors) Apocalyptic Evangelicals (Hagee) and overly politicized practitioners of real estate double standards (Jews can buy and build anywhere in Jerusalem, Arabs can't.) It seems to me that if you add those three things up, that's BAD PR for birthright, not good. And they're paying for it! And you don't think that smart, unaffiliated kid that you're going for, trying to turn on to Jewish identity and Jewish community, isn't going to be turned off by such media-savvy strategies to sell him a product? Why get into bed with these guys at all? Do we really need the headache?

It's a gamble not worth taking. But what do I know about gambling? Ask Irving Moskowitz for advice...

Here's Failed Messiah's post.

Here's Daniel Sieradski's Twitter petition.

The thing that motivates me is that I love what birthright does for people--why muck it up with overly complicated message makers.

Keep it simple. Stick to the idea that inspired the program and then focus on helping connect participants to vibrant Jewish communities after their trip to Israel. By the way, I just finished a great five weeks in Israel this summer with some amazing high school students and you know what? I'm in touch with all of them--by email. Free PR for Torah and staying connected to Jewish life!

Shmarya you should get the lion's share of the credit as the others simply followed your lead.

So is Dan Sieradski also going to cut ties with journalist Larry Yudelson involved with Dan's Jewschool blog who was caught by Steven I. Weiss on his Protocols blog impersonating me in an attempt to discredit me?

Of course not. Not unless Larry suddenly gets right wing views.

Why is Larry Yudelson through his Ben Yehudah Press allowing Yori Yanover to promote Rabbi Worch with his new book when they all know about this: http://www.theage.com.au/national/sex-and-the-synagogue-20081001-4s4z.html

And why does Dan associate with such people?

And where is the new organization that outs sex offenders in the Jewish community on the internet that Dan promised me several years back in one of his nasty emails to me?

Where is the effort from these people who were active and linked with the Jewish Renewal movement who protected abuser Gafni for several years longer than everyone else (until what was clear to everyone else was right in front of their eyes) to combat sexual abuse?

Where are their voices on the Markey bill? Why do they still deny publically the voices and experiences of Gafni's earlier survivors? Where is the teshuvah?

They did the very LEAST that they could. A complete whitewash was all they could muster of their role and responsibility.

Notice how no one will refer to the fact that the same people at Birthright who hired 5WPR also hired Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman as Birthright's executive vice president despite the fact tht the fact that Zimmerman was suspended at the time by the CCAR for sexual misconduct.

wHISTLEBLOWER -
Ronnnn has a long and illustrious history as an obnoxious thug. Shelly Zimmerman has a long and illustrious history of teaching Torah and inspiring students. When he was accused of violating the CCAR code, he resigned his position, and began his path of teshuva. No denial of anything. Indeed, he even wrote about his personal path of teshuva in the CCAR's quarterly.

Even people of integrity make mistakes. Ronnnn never impressed me as a person of integrity, but rather as a judeo-thug.

OCR
Excellent points, and accurate. I always found Shelly to be honest in community dealings. One cannot say the same for Ronn. What surprises me is Ronn's support among some in the MO community.

IMHO the Forward under the current leadership is making a similar mistake to the one it made under the former editor, Seth Lipsky. They are infatuated with themselves and fail to remember both their history and the role they play in Jewish life. Its not surprising then that they fail to give credit where credit is due - their egos would not allow them to do anything else.
As one friend said to me recently, they have become "great" men.

Actually, 5WPR broke the story themselves by issuing a press release.
