I thought a "gas" station in Boro Park was a place that served cholent!
Posted by: JewishCynic | August 20, 2009 at 11:10 AM
This of course reminds me of the old joke about a roadside joint: "Eat here, get gas!"
We got a couple places like that right here in the wilds of NW New Jersey.

I used to live down the street from this place! It's on 14th avenue somewhere around 36th street, right on the Borough Park/Kensington border.

Some funny lines:
"What's gefilte fish?"
"Uh, not sure how to describe it...it's like...whitefish..."
""CRC..that's the highest kosher certification..."
"How'd you put together a kosher restaurant and a gas station?"
"Uhhh..."
"Hemishe" means soul food."
Hemishe actually means "Chasidic."

Let me be clearer:
Heimishe actually means "homey" not in the street sense but in the homestyle, warm, familiar sense that one has of "home." It has become synonymous with "Chasidish," as in, "Is he a heimishe Yid?" ("Is he a Chasidic Jew?")

Harold,
RIO GAS STATION
14th Avenue and 38th Street
Borough Park, Brooklyn

Shmuel, I disagree.
Heimishe yidden are folks of traditional background with whom a religious Jew can feel comfortable, because of the warm familiar feeling a fellow religious Jew would have with a person who 'understands'.
The term is sometimes used by Chasidic Jews in reference to friendly nonorthodox Jews who are of traditional background.
Not all heimishe yidden are orthodox, but orthodox Jews should all be heimish. Alas, some aren't.

I had to drive into Brooklyn today, and as usual, made a wrong turn and got lost. I wound up on 14th Avenue and passed the Rio gas station! Out front, they have a roomy, canopied self-service area with 12 gas pumps, huge by Brooklyn standards. It looked like the structure was from the 60's, and part of the service bay area was converted to the deli. They have one of those high signs like you find at service stations/convenience stores off interstate exits. Instead of space on the sign for Dunkin Donuts, there was space for a Ostrovitsky's sign. There were no corny references to a Kosher Deli or anything like that.
I found a NY Post story about the place as well, but I have to split up the URL in two pieces:

bklyn_gas_stop_a_kosher_delight_168616.htm
What the folks from this Murdoch-owned TV station didn't appreciate was that this gas station/convenience store owner's business model makes perfect sense for Borough Park.
