Haredim to police: Nazis, burn in hell
Shabbat war continues: Thousands of ultra-Orthodox rioters hurl stones at security forces, vehicles in Jerusalem to protest opening of parking lot on Shabbat; haredi demonstrators refer to police as 'Nazis, anti-Semites'
Ronen Medzini, YnetShabbat war resumes in full force: Thousands of haredim hit Jerusalem's streets Saturday to violently protest against the decision to open a disputed parking lot on Shabbat.
Demonstrators repeatedly attempted to lie down on the main road leading to the Karta parking lot. The Orthodox rioters were directing harsh derogatory terms at security officers, including "Nazis" and "anti-Semites."
Some protestors yelled at police: "We overcame the Nazis, and we shall overcome you too," while others chanted "you will burn in hell; the haredim will stick around."
Earlier Saturday, protestors formed a human chain in a bid to hinder police efforts to remove them from the scene of one protest. Police soon began detaining some of the demonstrators.
Elsewhere in the capital, ultra-Orthodox rioters hurled stones at vehicles traveling in northern Jerusalem. No injuries were reported in the incident, as police forces rushed to the scene.
Rabbis to lead protests
Dozens of police officers were deployed near the disputed parking lot and have placed roadblocks along the road in a bid to prevent the haredim from accessing the disputed parking lot. Initial reports indicate that haredi protestors were pushing and shoving police officers, who were struggling to hold the protestors back. The ultra-Orthodox public has been urged to take part in the Mea Shearim protests in recent days after notices to that effect were posted in the capital. As opposed to last week's protests, which were largely spontaneous, this week demonstrators will receive official support in the form of community rabbis, expected to head the protest marches.
Last week, 57 ultra-Orthodox suspects were detained in connection with assaults on police officers, engaging in illegal protests, and violent riots. Some of the detainees have already been indicted at court.Efrat Weiss contributed to the report
The Jerusalem Post:
Haredim protest Shabbat desecration
By ETGAR LEFKOVITS • Jerusalem PostMasses of haredim demonstrated and hurled rocks at police in Jerusalem on Saturday in an ongoing protest against the opening of a parking lot on Shabbat to accommodate weekend visitors to the Old City.
The protesters chanted that anyone who desecrates Shabbat "must die." To police seeking to rein them in, they warned, "You will burn in the fire of hell!"
The level of violence at the afternoon protest was lower than it was the previous weekend, police said. Setting the stage for further violent clashes, however, activists from the Eda Haredit were planning a major midweek demonstration in Jerusalem against the desecration of Shabbat.
In the latest protests, several hundred haredim, yelling "Shabbos, Shabbos," "Nazis" and "anti-Semites," tried to break into the parking lot opposite the Jaffa Gate, but were forcibly prevented from entering the area by police, Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby.
The protesters intermittently hurled rocks at police, as well as at passing vehicles elsewhere in the city, he said.
There were no injuries reported in the altercation, and one demonstrator was arrested on the scene. Last weekend, scores of protesters were arrested.
After Shabbat ended, several garbage bins in the city's Mea Shearim neighborhood were set on fire.
The protests began a month ago, after the city opened the municipal parking lot on Shabbat, free of charge, to accommodate weekend visitors.
Seeking to reach a compromise, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat subsequently arranged to open the Carta parking lot opposite the walls of the Old City - a private lot that is also further away from haredi neighborhoods - but the move failed to quash the protests.
Barkat spokesman Evyatar Elad said Saturday that the decision to open the parking lot on Shabbat would stand.
"The mayor is committed to the safety of the public," Elad said, noting that some 370 motorists used the car park on Saturday.
The original decision to open the parking garage on Shabbat was made at the urging of police, who said that a lack of parking around the Old City was leading to double-parked cars on major city thoroughfares, posing a safety hazard.
Note the apparent sequence shown in the photos, which were gathered from three separate sources: Haredi puts up his fists; haredi yelling and shaking his fist at a border patrol officer; border patrol officer pushing haredi backward; haredim fleeing police and border patrol; haredim fleeing mounted police.

This violent protests of Haredi "Sages" reflect poorly on our religion. Is what they represet "Pure Torah Judaism"? I hope not.

"Anyone who breaks Shabbos must die!"
Y. Menken at CrossCurrents is spinning this as the demonstrators are just quoting from the Torah.

Use an extremist to fight an extremist.
At the next Hareidi gathering get some PETA protesters to throw red paint on the fur hats.
The Hareidim can then attack PETA for dying furs on the shabbat.
(ROTFLMAO)

Don't they understand that this hurts all Jews world over?
Posted by: Reader | July 05, 2009 at 04:59 PM
I think that they both don't understand and don't care. The Jews that are hurting are not their kind of Jews. Many of Jews that are hurting are sinners and must hurt, this is a G-d's will. The reasoning is of exactly the same "holy parasitic" type that works to justify taking money from the state (i.e. secular Jews), giving nothing in return and demanding more and more.

The thought of a pious devout Jew raising his fists to another Jew sickens me.
I doubt however, that Evil Santa's fists, having never done a day of physical labor, could punch their way out of a paper bag.

The only difference between them and the Taliban is that the Taliban aren't cowards or inept at physical violence.

The Taliban are quite adept at inflicting physical violence upon civilians, especially, unarmed ones.
They're not doing so well against the US Marine Corps, are they?

How many haredi Jews fought (or defeated) the Nazis? The "we" that defeated the Nazis isn't who they think it is.
