Please Make This Call Today
…[P]lease call Speaker Sheldon Silver and thank him for his continued strong support of the Markey bill. Ask Speaker Silver to please make sure the Child Victims Act (Assembly Bill Number A2596) makes it to the Assembly floor for a vote before the session ends on Monday.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver
1-518-455-3791
We need a list of the "fence sitters" in the Assembly who are vacillating between voting for or against the bill. Margaret Markey thinks she has just enough votes in the Assembly (77) for passage.

There is a reason why statutes of limitations exist. Before we take down a fence (i.e., sttautes of limitations) we should ask why they are created. Consider that Joel Engleman is now prosecuting somebody who abused him when he was 8. He is now 23. Witnesses die in a 15 year period. Let us just assume for the sake of argument that Engelman is a liar and a scam-artist. Assume that the perpetrator had an alibi witness who had died a couple years back. This is why we have statututes of limitation. Additionally memories fade. Is it just to file charges against an indiviudal for something that happened 15 years ago. How can he assemble a defense when the alleged crime is shrouded in deeds done in decades past. I think that if we think this through we will realize the wisdom of statutes of limitations.

to 1130. lets just assume for argument sake that you are a child molester and you are literally shitting in your pants because you have no where to hide .

To IN THE DARK 1:54 AM
No I am not a child molester. I am a criminal defense attorney who has represented many alleged child molesters. Believe it or not some are actually innocent. I know this is a novel notion that you may have difficulty wrapping your mind around.
Before DNA came along it was assumed that juries did not make mistakes, police were honest, and children do not lie or otherwise misconstrue. I can conceive of no greater wrong than an innocent man sitting in a cage for 25 years.
Many others although having committed some crime of child abuse did not commit the more serious crime for which they may be charged. This is another common occurrence.
I have no problem with the ounishment of child abusers or any other criminal found guilty in a court of law even though I defend them. However, every person MUST have a fair trial. And concepts like the "statute of limitations" have served us well. Before you decide to deconstruct such a thing you need to think long and hard.

You can also ask him to make sure it does NOT get to the floor, if you want to follow the gedolim in our generation instead of the young smart as..s.

Only Agudah and Satmar oppose the bill. Other Orthodox groups support it.
Agudah and Satmar stand to lose millions of dollars if the bill passes because both have harbored known pedophiles.
So if you want to support harboring and enabling pedophiles and protecting criminals who hurt children, follow the 'insight' of the commenter at 7:30 am today.
Otherwise, ask Silver to bring the bill to the floor Monday for a vote.

Mordechai - surely questions about the veracity of recollection and the length of time since the alleged offences occurred are classic jury questions? Why don't you trust juries to weigh up the evidence?
