New Haven, CT- An alleged racketeer got an unlikely assist in court from a Rabbi.

Rabbi Shmully Hecht, one of New Haven's biggest landlords, came to New Haven U.S. District Court to stand up for Dennis Bozzuto, a trash-hauler who was about to be sent to prison for taking advantage of him.

Bozzuto, 37, was part of a larger probe into corruption and mob ties in the waste-hauling industry. Bozzuto was a minor player, going along in a crooked trash-hauling scheme.

Hecht, who lives and runs his business out of New Haven, was a victim of Bozzuto's criminal act.

Approaching the lectern, Hecht told Senior U.S. District Judge Ellen Bree Burns, he had no doubt the trash industry is "run by a bunch of monsters."

"They talk to you on the phone as if they're about to come over there and kill you," he said.

"They sort of look like they're out of a movie," Hecht told the judge, turning around to gesture at them. "Look at them — a bunch of good-looking guys. They look like the Italian trash mob!"

"But they're the exception in this industry," Hecht continued.

Hecht, whose company owns over 1,000 apartments, wiped a tear and said he has dealt daily with the Bozzutos for 10 years.

"He's a simple, decent guy," Hecht told the judge. "I definitely have never been a victim of anything Dennis Bozzuto has done." If anything, Hecht said, Bozzuto was the victim.

Bozzuto faced a maximum term of 20 years and a fine of up to $250,000 but the judge ordered a sentence below that range: 12 months, three years' supervised release plus a $10,000 fine. She said she meant the sentence to be a deterrent to trash-haulers out there.

Only when you see all of the motions, filings, attachmnts to filings, and transcripts do you get the full picture.

In the government's rebuttal, they note that at the November 19th bail hearing, they proffered:
1. defendent had motivation to flee
2. defendent had inclination to flee
3. defendent had ties to at least one foreign country where he could flee to, citing the Law of Return.

The next day, November 20th, the magistrate judge issued his ruling denying bail. After reading these other documents, I have to wonder if the judge really thought the Law of Return made all Jews flight risks, or if he just used that term as a name for the problem of having to extradicte someone from a foreign country.

My opinion: The judge knows all those illegals are detained until the trial. He doesn't want to be the one who let Rubashkin out on bail if he flees. He probably doesn't care if his decision is overturned by a higher court. To be fair to this judge, how often does he have to rule on bail hearings where a defendent is weathly and could flee half way around the world?

The New Haven Advocate reported once that Saturn is financially backed by Raymond Weil watch importer Benny Shabtai (Shabtai is Hebrew for Saturn) and Gutnick from AUstralia though they didn't realize that Hecht is his nephew.

They also wrote that Hecht, as founder of the Chai Society at Yale U, he convinced the Yale intelligentsia to give him money to invest in tech start ups.

I hope it doesn't turn out to be another ponzi scheme.

In the Rubashkin case, the prosecutors oppose the private security house arrest bail package but the judge has not ruled yet on the appeal. The point I made about the Long Island case is that the judge has to be very careful in setting conditions for private security. For example, if bills are not paid, the firm would be instructed to deliver Mr. Rubaskin to the Marshall's Service, at gunpoint, if necessary.

I beleive Leah was at the community dinner briefly, this past week. My heart also goes out to her and her children. Ulitmately, we will all be better off as the kosher industry will be forced to become more transparent. But for now there are no winners in this scandal. Not the people of Postville and not the children.

Now the pieces fall into place. I do remember seeing the name Raymond Weil associated with Chinese Auctions in Crown Heights. I guess he supplies them with watches as prizes, this Shmuley Hecht. Ulitmately, we will all be better off as the kosher industry will be forced to become more transparent.

I have thoughts on this statement. As a native Postville resident, I keep wondering why everyone thinks that this plant needs to remain kosher. We as a town have played that card once and everyone got burned. How would any new investor think they have a chance to make a go of it again? I say this for several reasons:
1) They have lost the trust of their employess. Can't find any without going to homeless shelters and 3rd world countries.
2) They have lost trust with the local businesses which have been burned for substantial money losses which they could not afford. They'll be lucky to survive themselves!
3) They have lost suppliers of feed, vet services, coops, water supplied by the town, electrial companies and anyone else whom I may have not mentioned. Critical contacts for a business to survive.
4) They have lost suppliers: regional farmers and sales barns which have also been burned for big money. I have inside contacts which have atested to this.
5) Lets not forget the banking institutions whom have also been burned with great losses. I again have heard from some of these outside the town. Not anything good either. I told them they were lucky not to have ever been involved. They should buy a 12 pack and kiss the ground as they walked out!
6) Another point which really bothers me the most is that 35 people in Postville were willing to give up their homes as collateral for the "CULT" Rubashkin! The town should be worried. That's telling me that a majority of the Jewish people think the crazy man didn't do anything wrong and that they still support him!! NOBODY should support kosher anymore. Their welcome is not welcome. Remember we used to be "Hometown to the World", not anymore we played that card and LOST. We are now "Hometown to Hope" and the only way that will happen is to BAN KOSHER! Personally I wouldn't eat anything from that damn plant, it's about as kosher as my hog..................

About that item (6), the judge's ruling of November 20th denying bail talks about a "defendent's exhibit 4". It mentions 30 homes and 2 million dollars. That is an average of just under $67,000 per home. Now, are these rental homes, or homes the individuals live in by themselves? This is like how that New York tax lawyer is the CEO of Agriprocessors.

After seeing how Bernard Madoff got so many wealthy individuals to invest their money with him, I guess it is possible for people to trust that Mr. Rubashkin will not flee.

My comment, as you referenced, was meant as a wry observation, not a direct statement that Chabad has classes in criminal techniques.

But they do teach, based on Tanya, that non-Jews are on a lower level of the human ladder and can be treated appropriately.

This, in my opinion, is pure heresy, as G-d clearly states in the Torah that He created ALL of mankind in His Image.

So it becomes quite possible for a Chabad Jew to think that mistreatment of non-Jews is, somehow OK, which may lead, in time to more serious activity, possibly criminal activity.

I don't know what it would take to restore the trust. I think many people believe-if it remains kosher, the Rubashkins will somehow be linked.

I do not know any of the Jewish employees working at the plant, but the woman who started the "Jacob's Market" kosher grocery and restaurant sure seemed like a nice person. And after the turkey plant fire when they surely had less business from some of the local people, she hired a displaced ITP employee to give her an income.
