It's amazing how God works in pure righteousness, overruling the evil plots and schemeing of the wicked rabbinical establishment. The rabbis plot to cover up child abuse in order to prevent a "chillul HaShem". Now, God ordains that their willful disregard of His Torah (by protecting the molesting rabbis) is the true Chillul HaShem and in His righteous anger exposed the charedim on WPIX for the whole world to see. I don't blame that guy Joel for dropping out, given his circumstances. But it's amazing to me how ex-black hats often go to the other extreme. As if there's no middle ground between Ultra-Orthodoxy and Ultra-Nothingism.

I think the reasons are:
1) they probably never prayed in a language understand ie. only in Hebrew (not even in Yiddish, let alone English)
2) no reasons were given for anything
3) it was always avon, avon (sin, sin)
- not a joyful version of Judaism
4) the theology that they were taught was higly illogical (unlike Rambam and others)
5) they did not have an inner wish to pray, or be observant, etc. since in a sense everything was done on the basis of peer group pressure, parental pressure, societal pressure, "keeping up with the Cohens" etc.

Yochanan, when young people from such an oppressive upbringing get exposed to the outside world, there is a rush of extreme behavior, particularly for self-indulgence and lots of experimentation with what had been expressly forbidden.
It takes a while to reach a healthy middle ground.
You may have read 'Foreskin's Lament' by Shalom Auslander; he describes it very well.
I hope these people have a good support network to help them with counseling and practical guidance; I understand there is such an organization.

Anybody raised in an extreme religious environment has a fair amount of debriefing to do. That's difficult work, and it takes a long time. It would be difficult to jump from that culture into any religious environment; if you've been told "our way is the only authentic way," it's hard to break that conditioning. It's easier to just leave altogether. Sometimes a clean break is the only way that people can feel whole.

Anyway, I don't see people jumping into "Ultra-Nothingism." Just because a person isn't religious doesn't mean he doesn't have spiritual beliefs, or pursue things that give him joy, or do important work in the world. Joel is a co-founder of Survivors for Justice. That's holy work. I can think of few things more important.

About a Chasid/haredi victim "dropping out"

When your brought up to believe the rabbis are all knowing and infailable and then that authority abuses you in a way contrary to everything you've been taught it's natural for such a victim to question everything he's been taught and go out into the world to see what he was missing, if the goyim are really animals, what a Big Mac tastes like etc.

Joel is young. He may later decide to return to judaism in some form.
