Prosecutors: Keep Slaughterhouse Manager Jailed
CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - Prosecutors say a former slaughterhouse manager should stay in jail because he's a flight risk.
They told a federal judge at a hearing Wednesday for Sholom Rubashkin that after he was arrested last week on bank fraud charges, agents found about $20,000 in cash and silver coins packed with passports in a travel bag in his bedroom.
Prosecutors also allege he tried to tamper with evidence when he was released from jail after earlier charges of harboring illegal immigrants and document fraud. Rubashkin, former CEO at Agriprocessors, pleaded not guilty to those charges.
The judge will rule Thursday on whether Rubashkin should remain in jail.
Lawyers say he kept the cash and documents together to protect them.

Let's not jump to conclusions. The silver coins were probably for tzedakah. (/sarcasm)

Keep them together in a bag in the bedroom to protect them?
There has to be a beter way to protect your passport cash and silver coins.
Maybe a safe deposit box?
Anyway who needs $ 20,000 in cash when you ave ATMs all over the world.

Regarding:
""""Anyway who needs $ 20,000 in cash when you ave ATMs all over the world.""""
Somebody on the run or who is trying to lay low in Canada while waiting for an opportune time to catch a plane to Israel needs an untraceable way to access funds.

I posted the Chicago Tribune version of this story last night that has much more detail of Rubashkin's excuses for this.

Sadly, it appears the Rubashkin defense team lacks as much credibility as its client. Storing such items in a bag DOESN'T show much yiddische kup. I'm sorry, the argument just doesn't sound logical to me. I place such items in what I deem as a very secure location - not in a bag.
Given Rubashkin's overall history, there's an unquestionable pattern to deceive, on his behalf.
More so, these accusation and assertions are extremely serious. I believe Rubashkin has access to personal wealth, and if I were in his shoes, with all he has to potentially face, given his past, even I, if I were in his shoes, might be thinking of leaving the country as well, if give the chance, in an attempt to avoid prosecution and the ensuing consequences.
The Rubashkin syndicate IS well connected. Passport or no passport - money can obtain almost anything in life.
To those who argue US/Israeli extradition treaties - Shmarya has spoken previously of some who fled to Israel, and are not being extradited back to the US for trial. It is my understanding, at present, there isn't a practical, fully functioning extradition treaty in place. And, of course, anything can be appealed anywhere.

I think we should give Rabbi Rubashkin the benefit of the doubt.
As a strict messianist, perhaps he had this bag packed in case the Messiah would come suddenly. The silver coins would be a gift to the High Priest.
His prosecution by the government probably is an indicator to him of the imminent coming of the Messiah.
I don't think he is a flight risk unless the Lubavitcher Rebbe comes back to life.

But couldn't it be said, as a strict messianist, wouldn't he be holding himself to a higher ethical set of standards?
His past/present actions appear to see him electing a cafeteria style plan (picking and choosing what he deems right and wrong), concerning law, ethics and practice.
I would say, I would like to give everyone the benefit of doubt, but in the Rubashkin matters, it would seem there is a distinct pattern and history to deceive. That in itself should be enough to raise eyebrows.

Now they could tag him (make Rubashkin wear a monitoring device), but if one has access to substantial financial resources, as well as connections, one could plan an elaborate escape, cut the device off, and flee.

He was already supposed to be wearing one.
He was also supposed to surrender his passport and his wife's passport, so I wonder whose passports were in that bag.

Extremely interesting point...

Strange, we both thought the same thing and posted at the same time!!!

With his criminal connections, it would not be diffucult for Rubashkin to quickly obtain forged passports, which would be pass for the real thing.
He needs to go away to some "Big House" for a long-long time.

Shmarya,
I've been experiencing some 'hang-time' with pages loading up from FM over the last day two or three days. It's taking more time for the full page load to take place; about 50 to 75% loads, and then it just sits for a while (5-10 seconds) and then completes. I have 6 Mbps+ service. Are your servers experiencing any problems in the last two or three days? Is it possible someone is attempting to disrupt your service via malicious attacks?

(This report says the passports were for Rubashkin's kids.)
Weiss, of Washington, D.C., cited Rubashkin's 15-year-old son, who has physical and mental disabilities. "This child has bonded with his father in a way that makes it crucial" for Rubashkin to be there," Weiss said.
As alternatives to detaining Rubashkin, Weiss asked the court to consider a court order barring him from communicating with Agriprocessors employees, home detention or moving Rubashkin far away from the plant so he would prove no threat to the prosecution.

Weiss countered that the government had scant evidence of his client's alleged attempt to destroy evidence. He said Rubashkin demonstrated his ties to the community when he traveled to Canada in late October, then returned, knowing that he probably would be arrested soon.
Weiss noted that Rubashkin and his wife already had surrendered their passports. He offered to also surrender the passports of four of the couple's 10 children, including a disabled 15-year-old son who, Weiss said, is especially attached to Rubashkin.
Weiss thanked about two dozen supporters in the audience, many of whom read Hebrew prayers during the proceedings. He added that numerous people had offered up the equity in their homes as guarantees for the bond. "They were ready to stake their most valuable possessions on Rabbi Rubashkin, that he will not flee," Weiss said.
(Don't be so sure that Rubashkin won't abscond and leave his supporters holding the bag)

Maybe he needed to go to the Kinus Hashluchim?

krewz asked a question earlier about Rubashkin's GPS monitor.
There have been cases where perps have been able to cut the device off and escape.
This includes a former NJ prosector who was on the run for weeks.
