US Department of Justice: Investigation Of Agriprocessors "Continuing"

The DOJ can't say what is being investigated. But it did say…

…its investigation is being "coordinated" with ICE and the US Department of Labor, as the Des Moines Register reports:

Washington, D.C. – A federal investigation into the Agriprocessors plant in Postville is "continuing," according to a letter sent by a Justice Department official to Rep. Bruce Braley, a Waterloo Democrat.

The letter does not specify what is being investigated, but notes that the Justice Department is coordinating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as the U.S. Department of Labor. It also says the Iowa Department of Labor was contacted before a major worksite enforcement action at the plant in May. More than 300 workers were arrested on criminal and immigration charges at the time.

Shortly afterward, Braley wrote to the Justice Department, the Department of Labor and Immigration and Customs Enforcement asking about the status of any ongoing investigations at the plant, including reported violations of workplace and child labor regulations.

He also asked if there was communication between labor officials and immigration officials prior to the action, and said he believes it is important that any investigation be continued.

In response, Keith B. Nelson, principal deputy assistant attorney general, wrote Braley that because of legal and ethical considerations, investigations cannot be discussed.

"We can confirm that the investigation that led to the recent convictions of 297 defendants detained at Agriprocessors, Inc., on May 12, 2008, is continuing," he wrote. "We can also confirm that the Department of Justice is coordinating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the United States Department of Labor. In addition, the Iowa Department of Labor was contacted prior to the May 12 action.

I heard that after the arrest of Carlos Gurrero the kill-floor supervisor, Sholom was walking around the plant holding his head and muttering that the arrest of Carlos was the worst thing to happen to the company since the raid.
Look for production values at the plant to fall ... again.
This is like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
Either the place will be struck by lightening, a tornado or a flood, or... it will be sold. Of course, they could just fold up and move back to Brooklyn but that seems unlikely.

Watching the pro-Rubashkin orthodox power structure fall over themselves is at once pathetic and tragi-comical.

It is really a very great shame what's going on now and all of it could have been simply avoided.

When PETA got the "whistleblower" call from an Agri employee back in 2003, it contacted Dr. Temple Grandin confidentially and she agreed to go to Postville for free and correct any problems there and no public notice would have be given. Agri would then have been transformed into a world-class Kosher slaughterhouse instead of remaining the world's worst.

This offer was passed on to Agri Management in writing, resulting in Nathan Lewin, Agri's Attorney, writing PETA back, after a very long delay and basically telling PETA and Dr. Grandin to take their very kind offer and shove it, leading PETA to send in an undercover investigator; we all know what happened after that.

This is the defining key to understand what has transpired, since then.

The Rubashkin family had a golden opportunity handed to them for free 5 years ago and simply blew it.

You are right John K. I recall seeing the link on this site some months ago to Lewin's video wjerein he was debating a PETA representative. Lewin was all filled with righteous indignation and piss and vinegar.

To AGRI any criticism was an act of war. PETA folks were nuts and crazies and everybody else was an anti-semte.

I suppose it is true that pride precedeth the fall.
