What is it about many Orthodox Jews that looks at a shitpile like the one in the white coat and thinks "holy?" What pray tell are the visual ques?

The one on the right looks shifty

Fleishike: I don't think "holy" I think "hole-y" as in "assholey" when I behold this rogue's gallery.

Comedy Central continues its foray into ethnic line ups with a new offering this fall tentatively called Jews Gone Wild in Fur.

It's frightening to know that this jerk has children of his own.

Betcha he doesn't torture his own. Just other's children.
Look at these clowns. But they're holy. Know how I know? THEY ALL HAVE BEARDS. That's all you need.

Fucking bastards wearing ridiculous polish hats and costumes. I repeat, what the hell has happened to our Sephardic culture?
How have so many Sephardim gotten caught up in this perversion of Judaism called "Charedism".
I am pissed off beyond belief.
If I had my way, I would burn every copy of the Zohar and the rantings of Luria would fare no better.

Haaretz-never missing an oppurtunity to bash nationalist Jews- calls Chen (yimach shmo) a Kahanist. Let it be clear, the man is no Kahanist, he's a dangerous cultist and psycopath. Meir Kahane was no Kabbalist, neither was he Charedi. It's unfortunate that the last few years has seen a 'pact' of sorts between the right wing and certain segments of the Charedi movement (whether it's the lunatic Messianists of Chabad or of Breslov). I feel that this -in large part- is to blame for the failures of the right-wing to stop the Gaza withdrawal as well as loss of sympathy for ther settler movement (because they have become associated with these deranged charedi cultists). But all that is a post in and of itself.

Both in the case of Chen (לא תמיד היה זה בית חרדי. אביו, שעלה ממרוקו, היה איש מעשה, ציוני שרוף, ששירת ביחידות מובחרות והשתתף בפעולות נועזות. אבל לקראת סוף שנות ה-70 הוצעה לו משרה צנועה, לשמש את הרבנים הראשיים לירושלים, וכשקיבל את המשרה החליט לחבוש כיפה שחורה ולהנחיל לילדיו חינוך חרדי) and the abusive parents, they are children of normative, 'modern orthodox' religious homes who decided to become Charedi.
Charedism=root of all evil

I cannot understand why charedi men need to have straggly beards. It makes a Jewish man look DIRTY, MESSY, DISGUSTING, AND UNHYGIENIC.
Fine, they do not want to use an electric razor. OK, I get it. They want the beard to look more “authentic” (whatever that means!). The untidy, disheveled beard is just disgusting though. Does it say somewhere that they cannot groom it and keep it clean! A beard can be attractive if it can fill in and is groomed.
I also need to add that CHAREDI MEN LOOK PATHETIC IN THEIR BEKISHE AND SHTREIMEL ! Jews have a 3500 year history but these nuts, are stuck in the style of eighteenth century Eastern Europe. What if I walked around wearing a T-shirt that said, “John Kerry for President” in protest of the 04 elections? I would look wacky. No one would take me seriously.
Wearing a gartel divides a man’s lower parts from his upper. Ohh please!! Their penis is probably tucked underneath creating friction. It is a way for them to have an erection without looking conspicuous!!!

When did the satanic looking forked beard get going? It doesn't go with a streimel anyway.

I second that - and will also add that it looks even more ridiculous in ISRAEL!

They look like a bunch of kids and i can't believe anyone would look up to these wankers for spiritual advice.

Sephardiman,
I laughed and agree with your comments.
The reason these Sephardi guys got caught up in Charedism is because most of the rest of us Sephardim are too moderate for them, and also we aren't interested in controlling others or being controlled by others.

Isn't there a Haredi group in Israel that wears beige kaftans instead of black ones?
That seems a little more logical to me.

No one answered my question:
Why do Charedi men have straggly beards?

Are you being serious or sarcastic?
If someone wore a white T-shirt in the summer instead of a black T-shirt that said, “John Kerry for Pres. 04,” that would make a man reasonable and less wacky? Maybe so. I think I shows that someone is too focused on the details and missed the point.

Anon: Chareidim take a machmer literalist interpretatio of the verse "Thou shalt not shave the four corners of thy face." At the very least that means untrimmed and unshaven beard, sideburns, and moustache. For many, it includes payot. (Or payos, as in "pay us now, or pay us later.")
A more common interpretation is that shaving, i.e. scraping with a razor, is assur. But trimming with a scisscors is okay. People who hold by that have neatly trimmed beards. Electric shavers do not scrape off the hair; they just cut very close. Those are okay for a clean shaven look, as are dipilatories.
If you look at an archival photo of the Lithuatian yeshivot prior to WWII, you will see most bochurim are clean shaven (indeed, some chareidim still are, but less so than before). They are wearing fedoras and business suits, just like non-Jews of the era. Now, the machmer interpretation of beards has become more prevalent, and the pre-War business look has been fossilized just as the clothing of 16th century Polish nobility has been fossilized by chassidim. Hence: dark suit, fedora, plus scraggly beard.
The real Jewish clothing is Beged Ivri, but it's too expensive and impractical to wear everyday. (It's very beautiful. Someone in Yerushalayim produces it).
In the future, I can see the descendents of modern orthodox clinging stubbornly to jeans and sneakers, while the rest of humanity wears Star Trek jumpsuits. They will say that Moshe Rabbeinu dressed that way...

So outside of the kabala crap, it is OK to put an 1-inch clipper to the beard to keep it groomed and clean. I bought a BT exboyfriend clippers to keep his beard symmetrical, but he said he didn’t need it. I thought he was afraid it was against halacha, but I wasn’t sure. Instead of clippers, he takes regular scissors and meticulously clips individual hairs: a hair here and a hair there; one hair is 3 inches, another is 2. They are all over the place. He looks Taliban. If this guy is willing to use scissors, he obviously is not letting it grow for kabala reasons, right? He can use clippers then too. He is following Chabad.

Rachel: That kabbalah crap is not in the torah. It is baal toseph. Rabbis read kabbalah into the torah, in the same clever way that Christians read Yushka into the torah. I don't believe in it. See Qappach, Dor Da'aim, and Maimonides (what he REALLY said, not how he's misinterpreted).

Rachel, He is in the honeymoon/cult/newbie stage. Like Reb Ariel; sooner or later they will both awaken and get out. Don't give him up as lost yet.

As a Haredi I must object to these ignorant comments. If you don't like the Ashkenaz whatever, we are still on the same team, same torah. You don't trim your beard because Leviticus 19:27 says not to harm your beard or shave off your Payos. Kaballah says Wisdom and kindness flows from your beard. Hence if you damage your beard you harming its essential holiness. Kaballah "crap" comes from Adam, Abraham and Isaac. If any of you had respect for any of these men you would have respect for Kabalah and the Torah as Leviticus 19:18 says to not bear a grudge, nor take revenge and to love thy neighbour. Please read your Tanakh again guys.
