Rubashkin, the Union, and Truth
The Forward has a good rundown of the recent confrontation between Agriprocessors and the UFCW union. I haven't seen the union's newspaper ads of flyers yet, and I did not receive an automated telephone call, so I'm relying on what others have reported. Still, it seems to me the union overreached, and their ads and calls were tone deaf. Why did this happen? I don't know. I suspect the union relied on Jews who are not familiar with Orthodox communities to set the tone of the ads.
All in all, the union did not lie. Rubashkin did not either, although his responses regarding recalls and mad cow disease are very disingenuous.
I've been sitting on a Rubashkin story for a few weeks now. Perhaps I'll post it Sunday or Monday.
Dr. Richard Schwartz, a professor at Staten Island College has a great website for Jewish Vegetarians. It is at:
http://www.jewishveg.com/torah.html
This particular web address gives intersesting information on the theological basis for vegetarianism in the Jewish religion.
The Chabad view seems to be that it is a mitzvah to eat meat on Shabbos. OK so if people eat meat, fine. It is their decision. But the Chabad view like many of their beliefs are based on buba meisas and superstition.

I think it was a big strategical error for the unions to hook up with the Jewish Labor Committee. Those Commies are affiliated with Meretz and will only make the Rubashkin camp look better when they lie about the so called Anti-Agri conspiracy, that only unsavory characters are out to get them.

Rubashkin sent out an S.O.S. for all his shills to come running to his defense. Lubinsky from KosherToday / Lubicom & Eckstein from YeshivaWorld answered the call.

"Let me assure you there are no recalls or food safety issues with our products."
Shalom Rubashkin
In this statement, he did not mention "raw" foods. He said that there are "no recalls". That is a blatant lie.

Wondering if Peta will go in with a left punch following the UFCW Forward ad. They are out for Thanksgiving holiday til Monday. Can't find a way to contact the Safran Foer guy. Is anyone else thinking along these lines? In the meantime, Harris Teeter ( a fairly 'jewfriendly' operation anyway ) I am happy to report sells NO rubashikin, only Empire. ( Just came out of there. ) It's somewhat of an upscale store so I usually grocery shop at Walmart which is rubashkin territory. But since I am a vegetarian I don't eat any of the the contested goods anyway. JEWS STOP EATING MEAT! You really can live without it, you won't die or be excommunicated.
