A granddaughter of a chief rabbi of Israel. A daughter of one of London's most prominent rabbis. She lost her virginity at 16 on the bima in front of the ark in her father's Orthodox synagogue. I agree with Jim and Jewish Atheist. She has issues, and it's wrong to desecrate the bimah. Lesbianism is a seperate issue.

I know lesbians who believe in Hashem and are observant Conservative Jews. I know the rabbis try to read a ban against it into the torah, but I don't think it's there. It is possible to have sincere religious feelings, and be sincerely gay at the same time. Communities should find a compassionate response to this.

I reply: It isn't, that's why you need Tradition with Scripture. Thus Catholics have more in common with Orthodox Jews vs Protestants with Karaites & semi-Karaites. It certainly bugs the Protestants when I point something like this out too them. Lesbianism isn't explicitly condemned in Scripture alone (though I believe you can & must infer it's condemnation from Scripture). Even in the NT there is only one verse that might be a condemnation but it is ambigous enough that it may refer to lesbianism or too having unnatural sex with women. Of course Catholic Tradition like Rabbinic condemns both.

My wife gave a talk to COURAGE a support group for Catholic homosexuals who wish to live chaste lives. For Catholics having homosexual tendancies is not a sin. Having some form of gay sex is the sin. As for being "cured" we both know of a gay man who had a religius conversion. He didn't believe "changing" was possible so he began to live a chaste life. He reported that after a few years of chastity he found much to his suprise he developed a crush on one of the members of COURAGE a WOMAN.
Some forms of homosexuality may in fact be a form of regressed adolecench. So I wouldn't close my mind to anything. Peronally I think in some cases "re-orientation" is possible. But you have to appoach it with scientific dispassion. Both sides are too MEGA dogmatic to be objective.

I just read the haaretz hebrew article. Wow, they should translate it. The publisher is rushing to get a second addition out.

Jim: I knew it was a typo- I was teasing you. I also dislike leftwing militant gays who demand tolerance but are intolerant themselves.

As for Sola Scriptura- I've heard of that. It is an impossibility. Even the Karaites have an interpretive tradition. Both religious and secular scholars concede that scripture is not always 100% lucid and needs interpretation.

But in my (not so) humble opinion, rabbinic intrepretation is occasionally farfetched, does not take into account historical, linguistic, and archaeologcal evidence, and rather than make scripture liveable in the modern world & builds fences, around fences, around fences, so we cannot see the torah anymore.

I support interpretation that at least consults with other academic disciplines, uses simple logic (not cauisistry- remember Occam's Razor), and tries to make the torah a living document rather than a set of hoops to jump through. (I don't expect religion to be convenient, but I don't want to relive Fiddler on the Roof either.)

I didn't think too highly of this book when I first read this post in August. But I just read it, and I recommend it highly.

Yes, it has the things you mention, but those are just a couple of anecdotes along the way of one woman's journey from an adolescent into sex and drugs, rebelling against her upbringing ... then turning to a haredi lifestyle in Jerusalem in a yeshiva and in marriage ... and then trying to find meaning in her life and sort through it all. It's a very powerful book.
