"Sanhedrin" Launches New "Initiative" For World Peace
The collection of wack-jobs known as the "Sanhedrin" has a plan to bring world peace. What is it? Ynet reports:
…In recent days, the group members have drafted a letter that will be translated into 70 languages and sent to all government institutions in the world, including “the sons of Esau and Ishmael” who do not hold diplomatic ties with Israel.
In the letter, the rabbis of the self-proclaimed Sanhedrin warn that the world is nearing a catastrophe, and write that the only way to bring peace among nations, states, and religions is by building a house for God, where Jews will worship, pray and offer up sacrifice, according to the vision of the prophets.
The rabbis also call on the non-Jews to help the people of Israel fulfill their destiny and build the Temple, in order to prevent bloodshed across the globe.
The letter will initially be translated into English, Spanish, Arabic, French and Farsi, and later also into Russian, Chinese and Japanese, and will include an invitation to world leaders to attend a conference dedicated to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem five months from now, during Succot.…
Yup. This will work. I can just see Putin bringing up a behayma as atonement for Russia's sins and Assad doing so for Syria's. And, hey, what about those mosques? Don't sweat the details, people! Our "sages" are in charge!
And how delusional are these "sages'? Very:
…Prof Hillel Weiss of the Sanhedrin explained that the Torah and the prophets have tasked the Jewish people with the responsibility for world peace. He stressed that the group’s project was to rebuild the Temple, not a “church for all nations,” but added, “We have all descended from the same father, this is not another primitive and racist approach.”
The worst thing is, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, a man who should know better, is the "president" of this insane asylum. Pad the court's walls, children – the "sanhedrin" is in session.
[Hat Tip: JM in the PM.]
I really do think we- All the Jewish people (not just the Haredim) should build the 3rd Temple, speedily in our time, with G-d's help. But we don't have to build it right next to El Aqsa Mosque. We can build it somewhere else in Jerusalem, and then when there is a proper peace with the Arabs, we can re-assemble it near the Temple Mount.
Also it clearly states in the Torah "a house of prayer for all nations". So we should definitely welcome members of other religions. However, people should only be allowed to pray from a pre-approved prayer book, so that the pure monotheistic purity of the Temple is maintained. Also- No sacrifices- the Sanhedrin should read Rambam.

As usual, I agree with Dave. I'm tired of talking to a wall. It makes me feel like we have a second rate religion. The Catholics have the Vatican, the Muslims have Mecca, the Anglicans have Canterbury- I guess I have an edifice complex. (I am also a Levi, and I would like to serve God with more than just the second aliya).
As for the Sanhedrin, it is touching, in a way, that they want world peace and they are willing to reach out to everyone. However, Shmarya, you're right. They will be a laughingstock. If only we lived in a world where a gesture like that could make a difference.

Hey, instead of a temple, how about building a palacial kosher fast-food emporium and call it McTemple.
This holy enterprise would draw hundreds of thousands of hungry people while concurrently employing thousands of unskilled, unemployed haredi cohanim and levites. I can just see the prophetic visions ... the sinner approaches the fast sacrifice counter and orders a frank on a bun. The cohain removes the burger from the bun and methodicaly cuts off the tips at both ends, reserving them for his shabbos chulent. The ketchup packets are slashed open and the insides shpritzed at the base of the hand washing station as an atonement for permitting the sinner's wife to purchase immodest clothes. And on Yom Kipur thousands would be drawn to the fried chicken sacrifice ... with special sacrificial mustard packets.
Oh ! for the good old days of Sodom and Gemorah !

Hmm, I think I would rather side up with Rashi's POV who argued that the Temple will be rebuilt by God, and will materialize out of the heavens -- contra Maimonides!
That viewpoint makes much more sense to me than what this new "Sanhedrin" is proposing. I can just imagine the price gouging and the other immoral shtick that would come with such a building governed by the Israeli rabbinate and the "Sanhedrin" -- I pray that these idiot savants never see their Temple realized -- it would be a complete sham.
Steinzaltz's role is perpelexing. He's smart enough to know better. He is discrediting everything he has ever accomplished by associating with these other lunatics. It appears that the Chabad insanity that epitomizes the "We Want Moshiach Now" crowd has infected Rabbi Steinzaltz (Even Yisrael). I suggest that Even Yisrael find his "evanim" before he is emasculated by those of us who are critical of his participation.
Let us pray and work instead for a democratic and pluralistic Israel that recognizes all Jews as having an important role to play and contribute.

You! Deem yourself worthy to comment on someone like Steinsaltz in such a manner? If Steinsaltz had a lobotomy he would still wiser then you are on any of your more intelligent days.
NO SMICHA. NO NESUYIN.NO PUSSY GETTIN NO EDUCATION.MOFO.

Born in Jerusalem in 1937 to secular parents, Steinsaltz studied physics, chemistry, mathematics, and sociology at the Hebrew University, in addition to his rabbinic studies. Following graduation, he established several experimental schools and, at the age of 23, became Israel’s youngest school principal, a record still unbroken.
In 1965, he founded the Israel Institute for Talmudic Publications and began his monumental translation to Hebrew, English, Russian, and various other languages. His edition of the Talmud includes his own explanation of the text and a complete commentary on the Talmud. To date, he has published 38 of the anticipated 46 volumes. While not without criticism (e.g. by Neusner, 1998), the Steinsaltz edition is widely used throughout Israel, the United States and the world. Over 2 million volumes of the Steinsaltz Talmud have been distributed to date. The out of print Random House publication of The Talmud: The Steinsaltz Edition is widely regarded as the most accurate and least redacted of any English language edition and is sought after on that basis by scholars and collectors. Controversial Talmud passages previously obscured, omitted entirely or confined to footnotes in English translations like the Soncino Talmud, receive full exposition in the English Steinsaltz Talmud.

There is an oppinion that says the Temple will be built about 6 mils north of the previous site!
Sanhedrin, build the temple and rabbinic judaism goes out of the window.
If there is a temple - no need to duven 3 times a day, or with a minyan, - in fact - if and when the temple gets rebuilt - Judaism is over!
You can eat milk and meat, pig, listen to kol Isha,
if the 'sandherin' is right - someone will be killing and rosting animals on Shabbos!
To psak - to say that there will be sacrifices in the temple is really to simplify an issue that is very complex.
I personally don't believe that there will be animal sacrifises - not just because of Rambam - but because of prophetic and biblical passages that refer to there being an end to death. -
and i don't think 'the Hagada' is a reliable source to counter Jeramiah?
the other problem - whoever builds the temple is the Messiah! according to the Rebbe's reading of Rambam
the more i think about this the more i realise i am probably a Buddhist.

by:|May 03,
is that your name?
steinsaltz is bad news. a soft spoken mean and degenerate fanatic, a narcissist infatuated with and full of himself. suffice to say that he is chabad person.
it is long since i have thrown his books. his translation and glosses on the talmud are mostly written by others in his employ- ghost writers. in the hebrew editions he relies in much of his interpretations on supposing that his readers are total ignorants.
he knows no greek and no arabic. outright bluffing he writes unreadable words and gives them any meaning that will make him look clever in the eyes of idiots.
now that the rebbe mamesh is dead, his own megalomania and follie des grandeurs is running wild.
as to you, without any name, who would you be? a nobody?
i take shmarya anytime over the sum of you and steinsaltz.

WoW. Boy you sure got his number. Now see if you can prove your lies.
Even Jacob Neusner, I will only assume you know who he is, crusty old crab that he is disagreed on structure and presentation but never on his hebrew and aramaic translations.
Now what are your credentials other then a bloated opinion stemming from an everyone knows more then you ever will complex.
"he knows no greek and no arabic. outright bluffing he writes unreadable words and gives them any meaning that will make him look clever in the eyes of idiots."
You mean like that god awful name, son of the bald one. Bet you took a long look in the Jastrow to find that one.
"i take shmarya anytime over the sum of you and steinsaltz."
Well some reach for the stars and others as yourself play hanball against the curb.

I am sick & tired of re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. We need to revitalize Judaism, and rescue it from obscurantism. We need a bold new vision, not bold new chumrot. (Or stale liberalism redefined as Judaism). A new temple and a new sanhedrin may not be the right ideas- and they are easy to ridicule. (Although I am more partial to the former than the latter). But if not that, then what? More infighting? More minutae? More Neo-Christian messianism? I still think we are a noble people with a positive message for the world. But we are making ourselves irrelevent- even to ourselves (see: unaffiliated Jews).

I agree with you, Yochanan.
I think a "parliament of Judaism" should be started on the internet, with rabbis of all factions and Karaite hakhamim and Samaritan
priests participating, as well as lay people. Much as these groups dislike each other, these are all Torah based faiths, and we have a lot more in common than we think.
Hopefully this will help revitalize Judaism.

Hmm, not that is a bright idea that won't get laughed out the door. Any chance we can include a link for donations like Shmarya does?
