Above bloghead offers that Avak Sofrim may mean abacus.
We can also farentfer Rashi (fist closed except for right thumb pointed to right) that the Mishna was allowing to write in "avak" because it is not permanent. The Mishna mentions regular "avak" so I might think (voice reverting to Gemora trop) that avak sofrim is different, since it is used to make ink permanent (besides the possibility that it is muktza). So it comes to tell us that one may write in it on Shabbos all the same, even though that is not its usual use. (Voice crescendo, thumb moving to vertical, followed by single bang on table with fist)

I retract my earlier statement that scotty is the failed messiah - at this point he obviously just wants to be G-d
