Israel's Next Wave Of Aliya?
Gary Motokow of Avotaynu.com writes:
The latest discoveries are that a good number of New World Hispanics, as suspected, have Semitic (Jewish) DNA.… [T]here are plans to do a rigorous acquisition of Sephardic DNA samples in order to create a DNA profile of Sephardic Jewry. They will then sample non-Jewish New World Hispanics for a Jewish connection. There are many stories of today's Hispanics descending from crypto-Jews who were forced to convert to Christianity in Spain and Portugal at the time of Christopher Columbus. It is theorized that many crypto-Jews colonized the New World in order to avoid the Inquisition.
Typical is the Spanish colony Santa Elena which existed briefly (1566-1584) in what today is South Carolina. The leader of the colony was a Spanish soldier named Juan Pardo. Pardo is a Spanish-Jewish name. Other colonists were named Braganza, Castillo, Chavez, Gallegos, Gomez, Lopez, Martin, Molina, Moreno, Navarro, Peres, Rivera and Zamora --all Spanish-Jewish names.
Can an American-Hispanic wave of aliya be far behind?
Sure: Every Lopez, Gomez and Martin is Jewish. In the near future, somebody in Korea will find out that the name of Kim actually is a certain indicator of Jewishness, as is the name of Jones in the US and Britain.

Given the history of Marranos, the Jewish DNA is quite believable. A friend of mine returned to Spain and found Jewish items in his grandmother's house, hidden away. But Catholicism is very strong among Hispanics, so I wouldn't expect a wave of conversions.

Like, a candle?

Many Jews did change their names to escape the inquisition. They changed them to neutral names that reflected Spanish provinces or animals. (I knew someone of Spanish descent who had about 1000 names. One of them was Cuervo - Spanish for crow - and her grandmother lit candles on Friday nights.
But the intermarriage was so great amongst these people that it is doubtful many or any of them are actually Jews, so this whole question os sort of moot.
Today, Israel has an immigration problem. The last thing Israel needs is to start accepting, in massive numbers, non-Jews who claim some tentative tie to Judaism.

I would welcome it. Israel is on the path to having an Arab majority. I'd rather have goyim who tolerate Jews in the majority.

LOL! No, a candle and a bottle of wine.

Well, it does get dark on Friday nights.

Ultimatum- Not a bad point at all.

Probably stuff her ancestors stole from the Jews who were expelled.

General Francisco Franco saved around 60,000 Jews by either having his diplomats pass out Spanish passports to Shefardi Jews OR if a refugee made it to the Spanish border, that refugee was let in.
A writer of a book who interviewed General Franco reasons that possibly the General knew he had Jewish roots. But the General was extremely reticent about giving a rational answer for his conduct during WWII.
Spanish diplomats partied with nazi diplomats at night and handed out passports during the day.

B"H
I have heard that Franco have said that had he allowed Gestapo into Spain the 1st one they would take would be him since his mother was Jewish

Years ago, when I worked in a lab at a University, a visiting professor from Rome privately mentioned to my wife and I - who had prepared a Pesach menu for a lab party - that he was Jewish. How did he find out? Because his mother finally told him the reason she would light candles in the closet every Friday night at sunset, and it had nothing to do with needing light to see in there.

In the closet? She was probably lighting candles for St. Homobonus -- the patron saint of tailors.

Are all Chabadniks sarcastic, racist chazerim? What's being said here is tasteless and offensive. Do you act like this off-line, too?

"In the closet? She was probably lighting candles for St. Homobonus -- the patron saint of tailors."
This guy had no reason to falsely claim his Jewish roots, and perhaps plenty of reasons not to admit them given the level of anti-semitism in Europe. One of the professor's favorite dishes was deep-fried artichokes, a dish that, interestingly enough, Sephardic Jews introduced to Italy.

So? I know people of all races that like challah -- something developed and introduced to America by Jews. It doesn't mean they have Jewish roots.

I think you are projecting. Spaniards are a race? Who knew?

Well, duh. Did you learn that advanced reasoning through years of yeshiva studies? Did you learn to act like fool there, too, or does it just come naturally?

challah
what passes for challah now among jews in North America
is none else than the german/austrian zopf -braided bread.
gentile germans and austrians still bake zopfs , and call them thus .
the name challah , has nothing to do with the appearance, neither does the appearance have anything to do with judaism .
of course the name challah indicates a pinch of dough that gets burned .
jews of the middle east do not use zopf , but they do hafroshos challah from pitas they bake .
next week , a study of who invented the bagel (with and without hole) .

Look in the mirror. It's the exact same anecdotal and selective reasoning you used. Still and all, the world could benefit from your "rigorous" academic research. I have a working title for your dissertation:
"Candles in the Closet: Essays on Crypto-Jews and Artichokes."

Hey, Nigrit-
The Rosh called- he's pissed. Wants you to get the hell off the computer or you'll be doing shlichus on a small island in the Arctic Circle

Just wondering - is it painful to be so stupid, or do you bathe with joy in flaunting your inadequate intellect on the net? Oh well, back to things - and people - that matter.

Wait a minute, is the Challah/Zopf a Jewish or a German invention?
