I'm sure the l'Chaims were flowing in Postville and NYC (at both the OU and Crown Heights) after this issue was published. There is one quote, from one side, of the PETA video controversy.
Shalom Rubashkin repeats the false statement that the animals shown in the video that were staggering were actually dead, like a chicken with it's head cut off. Score for that round: Agriprocessors - 1, Truth in reporting - 0. Thanks for checking with large animal biologists - not.
Sholom Rubashkin also gets in his take on PETA's goal: "I think PETA is after the shehitah process... they'd love to make it illegal". Score for that round: Agriprocessors - 1, Truth in reporting - 0. Thanks for letting PETA (radical freaks though they may be) point out the text of their letter to OU was amazingly rational and called for reasonable changes consistent with Jewish law and modern animal science knowledge, not an end to kosher slaughter.
The story closes by noting the text from a city council resolution renouncing "unfounded and unproven attacks on AgriProcessors, Inc. or its kosher processing". Score for that round: Agriprocessors - 1, Postville city council so desperate for tax revenue that they sell their collective soul to satan - 0. Reminds me of a favorite quote from the film, Big Chill: "they were only raping the land..."
Final score: gee, what was I expecting, anyway? I don't think AgriProcessors could have, or would have, written the text copy any differently. I'm just surprised to see such poor, unbalanced reporting in one of the few remaining periodicals that (used to) impress me with their high standards.
