And who are they?

I see the humor , but it is too personal. You can make your points without getting personal like that.
Also, I don't think all the people you have up there belong there. Some seem to be hardly, if at all involved in the matter.

Don't talk until you've reached their level. Or have come close to learning as much Torah as they have. You sound like an idiot.

rabbis schachter and willig don't belong with those others. they speak to a completely different community, and their opinions don't count for much amongst the hareidim.

Can someone please tell me which of Slifkin's books I can read to catch up on what exactly is going on here.
Does Slifkin address the letters written by the Lubavitcher Rebbe from the 60's to Jewish scientists?
Thanks

Rabbi Gelley has influence a few hundred people in his Kehilloh, and most of them don't respect him.

Everyone forgets that the action of signing such a ban is an exersize of the authors Halachik opinion I can understand people disagreeing with it but what makes those Gedolim thugs they are simply expresing their opinion that these book are harmfull spiritualy for those who read them and it's part of the responsibilitys of being a "godol" to issue such bans just as it's a part of the reponsibility of say OU to issue statements that someone is missusing a heksher.
I personaly wouldn't do it in their place there is a very insightfull letter of the Rebbe King Moshiach Shlit"a which explains why it does more harm then good and the author of this site has as mch common sense as those Gedolim as his way of fighting Chabad and Moshiach simply gives us more and more free publicity and if you read history of Chabad or General Chassidism before it it's exactly how it became widely known thru silly unsubstantiated acusations.

Why do we need book banning in this day and age? What is so dangerous that we must not even read it? Is it possible that strong questions might be asked for which the pat, choriographed answers from yeshiva do not suffice? Is it just possible that the gedolim are not courageous enough to face the community and allow debate on really tough questions? As a father, I agree it is much easier to just tell my kids, don't ask and do it my correct way or else, but am I really doing them a service in the long run, especially if they have a question on something that is important and bothers them.
I thought that we were teaching people to think in ysehiva, not just to regurgitate aphorisms.

Shalom uBrocha!
You are missing the point of my post.I simply said that it's improper to mock those Haredi Gedolim call them thugs and such for signing a letter which is practicly speaking is binding on people who already accept the authority of those Gedolim. You may value critical thinking but there are communitys who value emunah peshutah - simple faith more and thus they accept authority of those Gedolim. Jewish people are one body but they have many parts some are the head (thinkers) and some are the feet or hands and then there is a level of the "head of the foot" as many of those Gedolim are so they encourage people to only read such books that would generate enthusiasm to fullfill practical mitzvot without second thoughts.Rabbis who signed the ban probably feel that for their students to read Rabbi Slifkin's books will likely weaken their faith in G-d faith that Torah is the word of G-d eternal and true on a simple level too. If you would like to read an interesting book on Torah and science that also gives insightfull answers about the disadvantage of using apologetics to deal with new scientific theorys may I sugest Mind over Matter by Proffesor Herman (Yermiyahu) Branover edited by Proffesor Arye Gotfryd posted here http://www.chabad.org/library/article.asp?AID=111581
It's very interesting I'm sure you will enjoy it.

PS: So to sum up I personaly am generaly against proclamations of bans of books as a practical matter this simply ads more publicity to the book in our day and age but I fill that it's not Kovod haTorah to mock the signers the way Shmarya did.zhow would you feel if those Gedolim would be teachers at your sons school and your son would feel much less respect for them after seeing the mockery Shmarya created? Shouldn't student have respect for his teachers? Should a Jew have respect for great Torah scholars?
