Federal farm officials have begun an investigation into allegations of animal cruelty at a kosher slaughterhouse.
Steve Cohen, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, says the agency sent an investigator to the Agricprocessors Incorporated plant in Postville, after it received materials from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
The animal rights group posted a video on its Web site Wednesday of what it claims are violations of federal slaughter regulations. The videotape showed animals thrashing about after their throats were slit.
PETA says the videotape, taken secretly in the summer of 2004, shows the animals were conscious and suffering.
Cohen said the investigation will cover all aspects of the plant. He says it's unknown how long the investigation will take.
